Chapter 39: Fierce Battle
In the eyes of ordinary mortals, cultivators are beings of immense power, capable of moving mountains and traversing the heavens.
Yet, even for these formidable figures, life can be perilously fragile.
This is especially true for the vast majority within the world of cultivation—those at the stages of Transcendence and Qi Training.
Without mastery of unique skills or the possession of potent defensive artifacts,
they remain vulnerable to sudden attacks and can be easily slain in combat.
Such was the fate of this young night watcher.
Unprepared for the impending danger,
he was struck by a magically enhanced crossbow arrow, leaving him no chance to react.
Devoid of any protective talismans, his doom was sealed.
Thud!
An arrow pierced his throat, and blood sprayed forth!
The young cultivator’s eyes bulged, his throat gurgled, and he collapsed to the ground.
Some of the blood spattered onto Wang Chen, who stood just a few steps away!
However, Wang Chen had sensed the looming threat even before the crossbow arrows were unleashed.
Without a second thought, he slapped his waist.
On his right side hung a storage bag and a talisman bag.
The talisman bag, as its name implies, was designed to hold talismans, enabling cultivators to activate them swiftly.
The first talisman Wang Chen activated was the Protection talisman!
Though his spiritual senses screamed warnings, his mind remained eerily calm.
In fact, he felt a strange sense of relief, as if thinking, "The inevitable has finally arrived."
As Wang Chen’s palm struck the talisman bag, pure magical energy instantly surged through the thin fabric, infusing the Protection talisman.
A radiant, shimmering light burst forth, enveloping his entire body.
Simultaneously, Wang Chen raised his left hand and struck the other talisman bag on his left side.
This bag contained the Armor Horse Talismans!
Another burst of spiritual light erupted and swiftly merged within him.
By the time Wang Chen had activated both talismans in a flash, the blood from the fallen cultivator had already reached him, only to be deflected by the protective barrier.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
At that very moment, more crossbow arrows shot from the darkness toward the Night Patrol Team.
Each arrow was aimed to kill!
Guo Ping, positioned ahead of Wang Chen on his right, suddenly ducked behind a young cultivator.
He deftly evaded two crossbow arrows aimed at him.
Thud! Thud! Thud!
Meanwhile, the young cultivator used as a human shield was struck by three arrows almost simultaneously.
One pierced his face, another his chest, and the last his lower abdomen, all of them passing clean through his body!
The Yunyang robe issued by the Wei Hall offered no defensive protection whatsoever.
This scene unfolded before Wang Chen’s eyes.
"Shield!"
His heart remained calm as he raised his right palm in front of him.
With a resolute shout, a radiant magical shield materialized abruptly.
It intercepted one of the deadly arrows aimed at him.
As a mid-level Qi Training protective spell, the Spirit Light Shield could seamlessly shift between "shield" and "armor" forms.
The "shield" form provided the strongest defense.
【Spirit Light Shield · Experience +1】
【Spirit Light Shield (Proficient): 0/200】
Wang Chen disregarded the notifications flashing in his vision and swiftly retreated backward.
Remaining with the group would make him an easy target.
He might even be used as a shield by Guo Ping.
As the saying goes, you can know a person’s face but not their heart.
The vice captain typically displayed enthusiasm and concern for the team members.
Yet in a critical moment, he decisively chose the option that best served his own interests,
buying himself time by sacrificing a teammate.
Wang Chen was relieved to be at the rear of the group; otherwise, this teammate’s fate could well have been his own!
"Wind come!"
As Wang Chen distanced himself, a thunderous roar erupted from the front of the team.
Yao Mingjie, positioned at the forefront, stood with his hair bristling, his eyes wide and blazing with fury.
The captain spread his arms, and a fierce gale suddenly roared around him.
It swept away all the incoming crossbow arrows.
Just moments earlier, Yao Mingjie had acted swiftly to block many of the first wave of arrows,
protecting several team members behind him.
Above his head, dark clouds gathered and churned at an astonishing pace, surging forward!
"Lightning come!"
In the next instant, thick lightning bolts, as wide as arms, streaked down from the sky, their brilliant light illuminating a vast area.
The figures of the attackers were suddenly exposed.
"Ah!"
A piercing scream echoed through the air.
At least three attackers were struck by lightning, instantly reduced to charred remains.
The might of high-level Qi Training was vividly demonstrated in this single strike!
"Push forward, shoulder to shoulder!"
The attackers were relentless, immediately sending multiple dark shadows surging toward Yao Mingjie.
Gleaming blades sliced through the darkness.
Simultaneously, a long fire whip lashed through the air, aiming to strike the night watchers behind Yao Mingjie with brutal force.
The enemy’s formation was clearly designed to annihilate the entire Fourth Night Patrol Team!
Caught completely off guard, the Night Patrol Team descended into chaos.
A few rookie night watchers, overwhelmed by fear, scattered in all directions, some even wailing and crying out.
In response, several dark shadows pursued them, their blades cutting them down one by one.
It was as easy as slicing through vegetables!
Yao Mingjie was so furious he nearly spat blood.
The enemies had clearly laid an ambush, launching a sudden attack that forced him to restrain his formidable spells to avoid harming the night watchers behind him.
And yet, the very team members he had fought so hard to protect were performing so pitifully!
With no other option, Yao Mingjie had no choice but to break through with all his might.
These rookies were simply beyond his ability to carry!
Meanwhile, Wang Chen, who had already begun to retreat, found himself facing a new crisis.
A dark figure was rapidly closing in on him.
The glinting blade flashed with a chilling light, revealing a stern, unyielding face and a body clad in black.
The opponent’s movement techniques were astonishingly fast; even with the Armor Horse Talismans activated, Wang Chen was overtaken in the blink of an eye.
Sensing danger, he immediately halted.
Gathering all his magical power into his right hand, he thrust his sword finger toward the oncoming attacker!
Seeing Wang Chen’s stance, the black-clad cultivator’s eyes flickered with mockery.
A mere rookie at the fourth realm of Qi Training dared to stand against him?
He swung his battle knife, aiming a lightning-fast strike at Wang Chen’s neck.
The black-clad cultivator was utterly confident that he could slice through this young Qi Training cultivator’s Protection and sever his head.
As for Wang Chen’s counterattack, the black-clad cultivator didn’t give it a second thought.
In a clash between the sixth level of Qi Training and the fourth realm, even a scratch would be considered a defeat for him!
Yet, just as his blade was about to strike, an intensely sharp golden aura suddenly flashed before his eyes.
A searing pain shot through his forehead, and his consciousness plunged into endless darkness!
How could this be?
The black-clad cultivator’s final thought had barely formed before it was extinguished!
Boom!
A cloud of dust erupted, instantly spreading in all directions.
It completely obscured the view.
Having just activated the Dust Smoke Talismans, Wang Chen bent down and swiftly snatched the storage bag from the black-clad cultivator’s waist.
Then, without hesitation, he turned and fled!
