Chapter 749: Change at the Valley Entrance

Mo Wenxian watched in fear as the heavens and earth seemed ready to crush him completely. With a bitter smile, he accepted the power of the demon god. He had overestimated himself—even a fraction of the Remnant Soul of the Demon God’s power was beyond his endurance. Just as he braced for death, the overwhelming force before him vanished abruptly. The earth formation dissipated as though unsealed.

“What… just happened?” Mo Wenxian muttered, bewildered.

“Ye Yun, what’s wrong with Mo Wenxian? And that Remnant Soul of the Demon God—it could’ve killed him earlier. Why did it stop?” Shui Lingling pouted, annoyed that Mo Wenxian had survived.

“Foolish girl,” Shui Yingying chided, her gaze fixed on the vanishing remnant soul. “Had Mo Wenxian failed to restrain it, that demon soul would’ve turned on us next. We’re innate spiritual bodies—prime targets.”

Her sister’s recklessness irked her. Sacrificing themselves for others? Unthinkable. Mo Wenxian, while courteous, posed a threat. His prodigious talent would become an obstacle once their sects clashed. Better to eliminate future strife now than endure a bloody rivalry.

“Did Wenxian succeed?” Blood Clothes murmured as peace returned to the valley. “That moment… I thought my heart would stop. If he’d died, I—”

“Silly Senior Sister!” San Ying giggled. “Mo Wenxian wouldn’t fall here! That remnant soul likely exhausted its Soul Power with its final attack. Its disappearance proves it’s gone for good.”

“If you say so…” Blood Clothes nodded, clinging to the explanation. She hurried to Mo Wenxian’s side as he descended. “Wenxian! Are you hurt? Did anything… strange happen?”

“Nothing serious.” He forced a tired smile. “I’m just grateful the remnant soul vanished when it did. Another moment, and I’d have been crushed.” Death meant little to him, but those he cherished still needed protection.

“Thank the heavens you’re safe! I don’t care about some inheritance—if you’d died, I’d have followed!” Blood Clothes declared, biting her lip.

“Enough.” Mo Wenxian’s voice softened. “Death comes for us all, but I’ll not enter the grave before you.” Her devotion moved him, but he’d never ask such a sacrifice. A century of life sufficed; beyond that, fate could decide.

“Senior Sister!” A burly disciple interjected, eyeing Blood Clothes’ affectionate grip on Mo Wenxian. “Now that he’s fine, shouldn’t we secure the inheritance and leave? That demon soul nearly scared my soul from my body!”

“This,” Blood Clothes hissed, murderous intent sharpening her gaze, “is why I nearly left you behind.” The disciple paled, realizing his blunder.

Nearby, Ye Yun opened his eyes.

“What is it?” Shui Lingling asked, noting his pensive look.

“A minor disturbance, resolved.” Ye Yun stood, observing the calm valley. “The demon soul’s gone. It’s time to claim the inheritance.”

“But there are so many of them!” Shui Lingling glared at Blood Clothes’ group. “We risked so much, yet they’ll snatch the Heavenly Immortal’s legacy!”

“I promised you and Yingying that inheritance,” Ye Yun said, resting a hand on her head. “Trust me.”

“It’s too dangerous! Mo Wenxian alone is trouble enough!”

“Do I seem suicidal?” Ye Yun chuckled before approaching Mo Wenxian. “Congratulations, Brother Mo. To repel a demon god’s remnant—truly remarkable.”

“You flatter me.” Mo Wenxian waved dismissively. “Had it not dissipated, I’d be dead. Luck favored me today.”

“Then let us see if luck favors your Blood Clothes with the Blood Qi Heavenly Immortal’s inheritance.” Ye Yun’s smile didn’t waver. “Should she fail, others may try. Fair, yes?”

“Fair enough.” Mo Wenxian nodded. Blood Clothes cultivated the Killing Immortal Classic, sharing lineage with the Blood Qi Heavenly Immortal. Her success was all but certain—unlike Ye Yun’s companions. Still, inheritances chose their heirs. “But be warned: these legacies have wills of their own. Failure may sting.”

“Your concern is unnecessary.” Ye Yun’s confidence held. The Ancestor of the Sword Path had negotiated with the Blood Qi Heavenly Immortal’s spirit. The inheritance would split—combat insights for Blood Clothes, broader Divine Arts for the twins. Spreading the Killing Immortal Classic’s fame appealed to the Heavenly Immortal’s pride.

“Deluding yourself?” Blood Clothes sneered. “Why would my ancestor’s legacy choose outsiders over me?”

“Stranger things have happened.” Ye Yun met her glare calmly. “Should you falter, I trust you’ll accept defeat gracefully.”

“I’m no sore loser!” Blood Clothes turned away with a cold snort. “Waste your hopes if you please—it changes nothing.”

Mo Wenxian followed the woman out, offering Ye Yun a wry smile which the latter acknowledged with a nod. After the six people disappeared through the entrance, Ye Yun observed the canyon left by the vanished stone statue. "Ling’er, Yingying, let’s join them," he said calmly.

Shui Lingling scampered to Ye Yun’s side, grumbling, "I’ll curse that wicked woman properly! The Blood Qi Heavenly Immortal would never let such a scheming creature inherit her legacy!"

"Enough, Ling’er," Shui Yingying chided while soothing her sister. "She does appear more qualified for the inheritance on the surface. No amount of cursing changes that." Her tone softened. "But during her acceptance ritual, I received the Blood Qi Heavenly Immortal’s spirit perception too. We still have our chance."

"Then I’ll absolutely humiliate her!" Shui Lingling declared, clenching small fists. "When I claim this Heavenly Immortal inheritance, I’ll make her eat those arrogant words!"

"For Ling’er, nothing’s impossible." Shui Yingying smiled at her sister’s restored confidence. Along their journey, she’d shared secrets revealed through the Blood Qi Heavenly Immortal’s spirit perception.

"So the legacy has three parts?" Shui Lingling tilted her head.

"Correct. The Killing Immortal Classic focuses on cultivation – less useful since our Starry Sky methods rival it. We’ll pursue the other two inheritances." Shui Yingying patted her sister’s head.

"Cleansing Technique and Extreme Killing Catastrophe? But we can’t use them without Blood Spiritual Power. Even with star spiritual power, they’d be half-effective at best."

"Which is why we’re not the intended users." Shui Yingying wagged a finger playfully before pointing at Ye Yun. "With his talent, mere descriptions would let him master them."

"So your grand plan involves me cultivating instead?" Ye Yun chuckled. "Without the original Killing Immortal Classic, even I could barely grasp fragments."

"How unreasonable!" Shui Lingling stamped her foot. "Demanding rare Blood Spiritual Power! Who creates techniques almost nobody can use?!"

"They were tailored to the Blood Qi Heavenly Immortal’s unique power. We can’t blame her," Shui Yingying reasoned. "That’s why we must compete fiercely for the Killing Immortal Classic."

"Ling’er will win! That haughty woman will learn cultivation level doesn’t equal talent!" The girl’s eyes sparkled. "Let’s hurry before she cheats!"

"Seeking the Killing Immortal Classic?" The Ancestor of the Sword Path’s voice echoed in Ye Yun’s mind. "The Blood Qi Heavenly Immortal already gave it to me, told me to pick someone suitable. Want it?"

"She’d surrender such treasure? Isn’t this fake?" Ye Yun questioned.

"Tch! Proof I’m more charming than Nine Palaces Heaven! Pity my heart’s already taken," the Ancestor boasted privately, omitting how the Blood Qi Heavenly Immortal disapproved of his methods. Aloud he added, "If you meet her, don’t mention my… history with Yue Lengxuan."

"You used my body for mischief. Why worry?" Ye Yun shrugged.

"You think the young forgive easily? Her ‘Judgment: Sin’s Apocalypse’ nearly erased me!" The Ancestor shuddered, recalling apocalyptic twilight barely averted by desperate vows.

"I’ll impart the Killing Immortal Classic, though you’ll likely abandon it. Remember – greed leads to half-baked mastery." As crimson energy flowed into Ye Yun, memory fragments surfaced.

"Multiple skills aid survival," Ye Yun countered. But when testing the technique, murderous impulses surged, forcing immediate withdrawal. "My foundation is the Cleansing Immortal Heart Technique, offense through Born as a Sword, movement via Illusory Thunderlight Escape. Adopting this would reset my cultivation!" He steadied his breathing, shaken. Only the Ancestor’s timely intervention prevented disaster.

The classic’s power was undeniable, but its blood-forged path demanded starting anew – too steep a price. After skimming its contents, Ye Yun abandoned the notion. "This inheritance isn’t for me," he laughed ruefully. While pursuing strength, he refused to stake everything on incompatible methods.
