Chapter 158: The Golden Eagle Alliance and the Golden Convergence Center
by karlmaksWith a soft “pop,” the air shield shattered and vanished. Ding Shijie vaulted into the air, his blood-red right hand spread wide, and slammed it down hard onto the Gold-Eating Beast’s skull.
The temperature of his right hand was astonishingly high. The moment it struck, it began to melt the top of the Gold-Eating Beast’s head.
The monster let out a desperate, piercing shriek that suddenly cut off. Ding Shijie backed away, putting distance between them. Half of the monster’s head had melted into a metallic liquid that dripped down its body. Its massive form crashed heavily, lifeless.
Ding Shijie had successfully dispatched the Gold-Eating Beast on the left. Su Li, however, had finished even faster. Since the monster couldn’t defend against the Dragon Rhino Sword, the fight was simple. Using the high speed of “Spider Walk,” Su Li continuously circled the beast, swinging the Dragon Rhino Sword. The first strike severed most of its giant palm, the second sliced off one of its massive legs, and the third split its head in half.
Three strikes ended the life of the Gold-Eating Beast. Su Li stopped as a Spiritual Source appeared and merged into his forehead.
“Level 6 Spiritual Source Wielder: Spiritual Source 76/90”
The Level 8 Elite Beast had provided Su Li with six Spiritual Sources. He was now only fourteen Spiritual Sources away from breaking through to Level 7—infinitely close to his goal.
Ding Shijie, having killed his monster, saw Su Li finish first and couldn’t help but praise him. “Brother Su is truly incredible. I have to concede.”
Su Li smiled faintly. “Brother Ding is too modest. I only had the advantage because my weapon is sharp.” This was not entirely modesty; without the Dragon Rhino Sword, he wasn’t sure he could have defeated Ding Shijie.
“Brother Su, you are far too humble. May I ask where you two are from?”
Su Li gave the name of the Purple Wind Building and returned the question to Ding Shijie.
“The Purple Wind Building? I’ve heard of it, but never visited. Have you heard of the ‘Golden Eagle Alliance’?”
Su Li’s heart instantly grew cold. The people he had killed—Gao Shupeng and Gao Shuxue’s group—were members of this very alliance. Gao Shupeng had been the leader of the “Gold Eagle One A-Building.” Su Li wondered who Ding Shijie was in the alliance, but it was clear that Ding Shijie knew nothing of the conflict, or his attitude would not be so friendly.
Su Li’s mind raced. He deliberately acted curious. “The Golden Eagle Alliance? This is the first I’ve heard of it.”
Seeing Su Li’s inquiry, Ding Shijie patiently explained. “The Golden Eagle Alliance currently consists of survivors from three buildings: Gold Eagle One A-Building and B-Building, and the Shimao Center Building. The total number exceeds a hundred people. Our idea is to unite all survivors who can be united, so we can work together and find a way out for humanity.”
He paused slightly before continuing. “Brother Su, with your strength, you must have a powerful voice in the Purple Wind Building. You should consider joining the alliance. What do you think?”
Su Li smiled. “I’ll go back and ask everyone’s opinion. It is indeed a good thing to unite and have strength in numbers.” He thought to himself, I’ve practically wiped out the elite forces of the Gold Eagle One A-Building. He wondered what Ding Shijie’s reaction would be once he found out.
Ding Shijie looked a little surprised. “With Brother Su’s strength, is there anyone stronger than you in the Purple Wind Building?” Clearly, he suspected Su Li was the leader.
Su Li didn’t answer. Instead, he asked, “Brother Ding, why are you alone here?”
Seeing Su Li avoid the question, Ding Shijie understood. He smiled knowingly and then pointed toward a six-story building floating on the water in the distance—the 36-story “Golden Convergence Center Building.”
“See that? I came for them.”
Su Li’s heart tensed slightly. “For them?”
Ding Shijie nodded. “Yes. The Golden Convergence Center Building also has many survivors, at least twenty or more. The Golden Eagle Alliance hopes the people there will join us. I just happened to be passing by and came to watch the excitement.”
“People from the Golden Eagle Alliance went to the Golden Convergence Center Building?” Su Li immediately thought of Jiang Shuijue. He wondered if she would join the Golden Eagle Alliance.
Ding Shijie chuckled. “Brother Su, would you like to come along and see?”
Su Li had not intended to go to the Golden Convergence Center Building, but this news worried him about Jiang Shuijue. If they were willing to join the alliance, that was fine. But if they refused, there might be a conflict. Remembering the assistance Jiang Shuijue’s group had given him, Su Li changed his mind. He nodded with a smile. “Alright, I’m passing by anyway. I’ll drop in and see.”
“In that case, let’s go together.”
Ding Shijie led Su Li to the other side of the building. Su Li saw a raft moored there that was far more advanced than theirs. Four life preservers were fixed to the bottom, and it had side panels, making it like a simple boat. With the life preservers providing buoyancy, the raft’s deck stayed above the water, keeping the passengers dry—much better than the plank raft they used.
Su Li’s eyes lit up. He praised, “Your boat is really nice.”
Ding Shijie sighed. “It’s a shame we don’t have enough manpower. Otherwise, we could mobilize a lot of people to search underwater for life preservers, tires, plastic barrels, and various rubber and plastic items that can float. We could build a truly large ship. With a large ship, we’d have a chance to leave this area and find dry land farther away.”
Su Li nodded, agreeing that Ding Shijie’s idea was excellent. With enough buoyancy material, building a large ship—or even a mobile floating island—was certainly possible.
Afterward, Ding Shijie boarded his own raft. Su Li and Liu Jiande paddled their original raft. The two vessels, carrying three people, left the building and headed toward the “Golden Convergence Center Building” in the distance.
As the three men approached, Su Li quickly realized something was wrong.
He heard screams carrying over the water. Hearing the sound, his heart sank slightly.
“Hmm? Did they start fighting?” Ding Shijie also heard the scream and frowned. He immediately accelerated, his paddle striking the water faster. His raft quickly shot ahead of Su Li’s.
“Faster,” Su Li instructed Liu Jiande. Liu Jiande nodded and hurried to increase his speed.
Outside the “Golden Convergence Center Building,” several rafts of various sizes were moored. Five people stood on one large raft. Opposite them, on a large balcony on the 31st floor, stood twelve people. Su Li’s sharp eyes immediately spotted Jiang Shuijue standing in the middle of the balcony. Gu Mingfeng and Ling Yi stood beside her, all armed. The atmosphere was tense; the two sides were in a standoff.
As Su Li watched from afar, he saw Gu Mingfeng leap from the balcony onto the large raft below, swinging his massive iron hammer toward the five men on the raft. Two men rushed forward to block Gu Mingfeng, while the other three leaped toward the balcony, attempting to rush the platform.
The sounds of clashing weapons, fighting, and shouting constantly reached them. The scene was chaotic. In the water, one man was trying to climb onto another raft, his chest revealing a large, bloody wound. The scream Su Li had heard earlier had come from him. He finally managed to crawl onto the raft, gasping for breath, and looked up at the 31st-floor balcony, cursing. Ling Yi, standing on the balcony, swung his sword, forcing back the three men who tried to rush him. They retreated back to the raft below.
With a “BANG,” Gu Mingfeng was suddenly kicked and tumbled into the water. Seeing this, Ling Yi immediately leaped from the balcony, swinging his sword repeatedly. The blade now glowed with a crystalline substance—he was clearly enraged. The men on the raft were formidable. One of them, armed with an iron rod, thrust it out to meet the blow.
With a “Zheng,” the iron rod blocked Ling Yi’s crystallized sword. The man felt his rod lighten considerably, horrified to see that Ling Yi’s crystal sword had sliced the rod in half. The sword then grazed his chest, drawing blood and leaving a long wound. He had only avoided being disemboweled because he had dodged quickly.
Su Li and Ding Shijie’s rafts were rapidly closing the distance, quickly coming within fifty meters of the Golden Convergence Center Building. The combatants noticed the two fast-approaching rafts and the people on them.
“Stop!” Ding Shijie suddenly roared. He slammed his paddle against the water. With a “BOOM,” water splashed everywhere, and he leaped into the air, covering several meters in a single bound, landing on another raft. Ding Shijie used the surrounding rafts as stepping stones, moving like lightning, and quickly closed the distance to the battle.
The men on the large raft immediately retreated, trying to disengage. Ling Yi shook his crystallized sword, thrusting it several times toward the retreating men. Ding Shijie appeared almost simultaneously. He darted past the retreating men, his right hand shooting out. The skin instantly turned blood-red, reaching an astonishing temperature. His hand spread open, aiming directly for Ling Yi’s crystal sword.
Ling Yi’s eyes narrowed slightly. He twisted his crystal sword, and the crystallization expanded from the sword to his right hand, making it crystalline as well. The power contained in the sword was rapidly increasing.
A “sizzle” sound erupted as Ding Shijie’s blood-red right hand gripped Ling Yi’s crystal sword. The sword began to steam heavily, as if encountering a red-hot iron rod.
