Chapter 120: Surrounded
by karlmaksHe tossed a few peanuts into his mouth, uncorked the hip flask, and took a long swig of liquor.
His eyes narrowed and trembled slightly, with faint light emanating from them, scanning the distant water surface from the roof.
“As expected, my sixth sense wasn’t wrong…”
The man’s voice was low and husky. He muttered to himself, “I initially thought it was that giant centipede making me nervous, with my sixth sense telling me something big was about to happen. Now I realize it wasn’t the centipede, but them…”
“A total of five people, two girls, one big, one small… The adult woman’s figure is quite something. Very nice. And that face is exactly my type.”
The man took another long drink, then screwed the cap back onto the flask. He suddenly rose from the centipede’s corpse, picked up the white baseball cap with his left hand, and snatched the two Kukri military daggers from the centipede’s body with his right.
Blood dripped down the blades.
He pulled the white baseball cap low over his head, concealing half of his face. He began sprinting along the rooftop. His black leather coat billowed behind him. Like a shooting arrow, he suddenly launched himself into the air, leaping far from the roof.
A rubber dinghy floated on the water outside the building, tethered by a rope to a balcony window. The man landed firmly on the dinghy with a loud thud, causing the boat to rock violently and nearly capsize.
The man sat down steadily. Two masses of brown matter suddenly protruded from the back of his black leather coat, instantly extending into two monstrous, scaly, brown arms, like ghost hands.
The two ghost hands grabbed the two short paddles on the dinghy. He used the Kukri dagger in his right hand to cut the rope tying the dinghy. The wooden paddles, held by the two ghost hands, sliced into the water, splashing spray. Driven by immense power, the dinghy shot out like an arrow.
Its destination was the Purple Wind Building.
“Heh heh, this is interesting. Rare guests have come calling. I must give them a proper welcome… a proper welcome!”
The man grinned, his face full of an indescribable happiness.
Led by Xu Haishui, Su Li, Ding Longyun, Gong Xiao, and Xu Xuehui swam underwater, steadily approaching the Purple Wind Building. Ding Longyun could now hold his breath for nearly twenty minutes and didn’t need to surface at all during the journey. Although Su Li had only enhanced his lungs once, his body’s continuous strengthening meant his lung capacity was increasing, and he could now hold his breath for six minutes.
The five encountered no danger or attacks from water monsters along the way. When they quietly arrived at the Purple Wind Building underwater, the sky had not completely darkened.
The Purple Wind Building was submerged from the 30th floor downward. The five were submerged, looking at the 29th floor of the building.
Through the windows of the 29th floor, they saw a few scattered Corpse Beasts floating inside, still resting and undisturbed.
Xu Haishui signaled to Su Li and the others, indicating he would quietly surface alone first to check the situation.
Su Li nodded to him. Xu Haishui held his short spear, gently propelling himself upward along the wall until he surfaced.
He then reached his left hand into the water and gave the others an OK sign.
Su Li then surfaced as well.
On the water surface, close to the Purple Wind Building, many rafts of varying sizes floated. These rafts were the water transportation for the Purple Wind Building to travel between buildings. As dusk approached, almost everyone who had gone out had returned, and the rafts were parked around the building.
The sky was nearing complete darkness. The few people clung tightly to the wall, only their heads exposed above the water. Unless the lookouts scrutinized the edges of the building closely, they would not be spotted.
“This is the time when they are most relaxed. The lookouts are about to switch shifts. Come on, let’s climb in through this window.” Xu Haishui reached his hands up to the edge of a 30th-floor window. He pulled himself up, confirmed no one was inside, and lightly flipped through the opening.
The 30th floor of the Purple Wind Building was unoccupied. In the dim light, the space was completely silent, with no one in sight.
Xu Haishui, now inside, poked his head out of the window and whispered, “Come on in, it’s safe here.”
Su Li, Ding Longyun, Gong Xiao, and Xu Xuehui then climbed through the window one by one.
Although the 30th floor was not completely submerged, the water was about 30 centimeters deep, and everyone’s shoes got wet.
Looking at the silent, dead room, Su Li felt an inexplicable unease rising in his heart. The journey had been too smooth, which made him feel restless.
The Purple Wind Building had over thirty people. Were all of them fools? Was it really this easy to sneak in?
Something felt wrong.
Following their previous plan, led by Xu Haishui, the five quickly moved to the hallway and headed toward the stairwell at the end. Gong Xiao and Xu Xuehui, being women and easily drawing attention, decided to temporarily stay on the 30th floor to provide support as needed.
“This is the time they all gather on the 34th floor for dinner. Only Tao Bingjun and the other leaders, along with the five women, eat separately. Almost everyone else gathers on the 34th floor. If we’re lucky, we can go straight up to the 36th floor and not run into anyone.”
Xu Haishui led the way, explaining in a low voice, “Wang Zhensheng, Sun Wenbo, and Li Wei live on the 36th floor. If we suddenly appear there, we can catch them off guard. Once we take care of them, only Tao Bingjun, who lives on the 38th floor, remains. No matter how powerful he is alone, he won’t be a threat…”
Just as Xu Haishui reached this point, his voice suddenly cut off, stuck in his throat. He stopped abruptly, freezing in place.
Su Li, Ding Longyun, Gong Xiao, and Xu Xuehui, who were following him, all stopped. They saw a group of people standing silently in the dim stairwell ahead, as if they had been waiting for them to arrive.
From the rear of the long hallway, two doors suddenly burst open with a “bang,” and people rushed out of the rooms, blocking the rear exit. They were trapped in the middle of the long hallway.
There were no windows in this section of the hallway. With people at the stairwell in front and a group of people behind them, they were caught in the middle. They were completely surrounded, with no way to escape.
