Chapter 419
by 林方方Chapter 419 An Unspeakable Secret!
Luo Feiliang’s office fell into a strange, heavy silence, and the excitement from before had completely vanished.
The Yamamoto Building had been struck and brought down by two aircraft. The first impact was still somewhat understandable, but the second left everyone baffled — how could an Eastern fighter jet have been so blind as to crash straight into the building?
Qian Wanxing seemed uncertain himself, his voice strained: “I’d like to think that guy isn’t the type to die so easily, right?”
“Don’t talk to me about what should or shouldn’t be — I want concrete information.” Luo Feiliang’s voice was heavy: “That final impact was clearly deliberate. Maybe Su Rui had anticipated this, but in that situation, how could he have possibly escaped from the plane?”
“Could he have bailed out early?” Shangguan Mo scratched his head. It seemed like years ago, when terrorists hijacked planes and crashed them into the World Trade Center twin towers in New York, there had been over a hundred people on board, and not a single one had survived.
“Bailing out early isn’t impossible, but don’t forget — there was also a damn Eastern jonin on that plane.” Luo Feiliang didn’t seem optimistic about Su Rui’s survival.
“Maybe he’d already subdued him beforehand.” Shangguan Mo said, though even he didn’t sound too convinced by his own reasoning.
“I need him alive or I need a body.” Luo Feiliang said coldly: “This matter is of the utmost importance — I need to report to leadership immediately.”
Qian Wanxing curled his lip: “They probably knew long before we did.”
“We still need to work out a response.” Luo Feiliang shook his head, rubbed his tired temples, and let out a long sigh: “Too much has been happening lately. You two go on — let me have some quiet.”
With that, he closed his eyes and simply stopped paying attention to the two subordinates in front of him.
Shangguan Mo shot Qian Wanxing a look, and after the two of them slipped quietly out the door, Shangguan Mo said: “I’m telling you, Xingzi, have you noticed that our chief seems different from before?”
Qian Wanxing looked thoughtful: “Now that you mention it, I hadn’t noticed until you brought it up — but it does seem that way. No matter how hard or exhausting things got before, the chief would never sigh like that. But just now, how many times did you hear him sigh?”
“Do you think he’s hiding something from us?” Shangguan Mo said: “Ever since that time Su Rui got cornered by the Yuanwei Gang at the cinema, I’ve felt like the chief hasn’t been quite right. Knowing him, even if he knew he was outmatched, he would’ve charged in to help — he wouldn’t have kept stalling and making excuses.”
“That’s true, he really was like that back then. Could he be hiding something from us? From the very beginning until now, he’s always been firmly in Su Rui’s corner — even when people in the bureau talked behind his back, he never gave it a second thought.” Qian Wanxing thought it over before speaking.
“Someone must be pressuring him. What do we do — should we go ask him directly?”
“I’m afraid even if we ask, he won’t say anything.” Qian Wanxing had already concluded that Luo Feiliang had something he couldn’t bring himself to say.
“Let’s think it through carefully. Right now the most urgent thing is to find out what happened to Su Rui. If that guy really did die in the East, then those few great families in the capital are probably going to be throwing banquets for days — we can’t let those people get what they want.”
Qian Wanxing said with a teasing grin: “You know, if it weren’t for those five great families, you, the young master of the Shangguan family, might have been the undisputed top young lord of the capital.”
“Bullshit.” Shangguan Mo spat dismissively: “If I cared about that, would I have spent all these years suffering in the State Security serious crimes unit? Stop talking nonsense with me — let’s hurry and find news about Su Rui. We can’t afford to waste time.”
“We split up.” Qian Wanxing said, then broke into a quick stride down the corridor.
Shangguan Mo watched his retreating figure, then glanced at Luo Feiliang’s tightly shut office door. A sharp, keen light flickered in his eyes, and he turned and walked off in the other direction.
Inside the office, Luo Feiliang sat with his eyes closed, deep in thought, his brow furrowed the entire time, his expression seeming somewhat conflicted.
He hesitated for a moment, then finally took out his phone and dialed a number.
“You finally decided to call? Seems like your patience is pretty decent after all.” The voice on the other end carried a hint of mockery.
“How are my wife and daughter?” Luo Feiliang struggled to suppress the emotions inside him, but no matter what, his voice carried a trace of anger.
Yes — it was the person on the other end of this call who had kidnapped his wife and daughter during the Huaxia decade-long gang tournament.
“Given that you’ve been quite cooperative, they’re doing very well here.” A sharp click came through the phone, as if a cigarette had just been lit.
“I want to hear their voices.” Luo Feiliang’s voice trembled slightly. He knew that whoever had kidnapped his wife and daughter must hold a position of considerable power — powerful enough that he couldn’t report it to the police, and couldn’t fight back. Because even with his position as head of the State Security serious crimes unit, he hadn’t been able to uncover a single lead in this matter.
“You don’t need to hear their voices, and I have no reason whatsoever to deceive you.” The person on the other end took a leisurely drag of their cigarette: “You should understand — as long as you behave yourself, they’ll be just fine.”
After a pause, the voice continued: “Of course, the moment you step out of line even slightly, I can guarantee they won’t be fine at all.”
Hearing this, Luo Feiliang’s heart clenched sharply.
“You’re a smart man, and a family man. You should know what to do to minimize the danger they’re in.”
“When will you let my wife and daughter go?” Luo Feiliang’s fingers dug into the surface of the desk, leaving what were almost visible grooves. His eyes were shot through with red, like a beast ready to tear into someone at any moment.
His wife and daughters had been kidnapped, and he could do nothing — was there anything more suffocating, more maddening than this?
“Simple — Su Rui dies, and I let them go.” At this point, a cold edge crept into the voice on the other end: “If he never dies, you’ll never see your wife and daughter again. I can say with certainty that even if you dug up every inch of this earth, you’d never find them.”
Luo Feiliang’s body shuddered. This tough man had fought his way through countless battles over the years, and had never taken a single step back even when covered in wounds — but his wife and daughter were truly this iron-faced man’s softest vulnerability.
“Of course, if your wife gets lonely, I don’t mind finding her a man to keep her company.”
“You bastard!”
Luo Feiliang slammed his fist hard on the desk.
“You’d better not curse at me — otherwise I can’t guarantee I won’t get a sudden urge to do something to your daughter. She’s only twelve, but she’s already shaping up to be quite a beauty.”
“Ah!” Luo Feiliang clutched his chest and let out a cry of anguish.
He shoved the monitor off the desk, then kicked the desk wildly.
All the negative emotions he had been suppressing for so many days finally erupted completely under the provocation of those words.
“Have you lost your mind?” The voice on the other end dripped with contempt: “You have no right to make any demands of me right now, and you’d better watch your mouth. Know your place — if you make me unhappy again, I might just share a bed with your wife and daughter. Your wife is still quite a charming woman, you know. I wouldn’t mind lowering myself to have her.”
“Ah!” Luo Feiliang let out another hysterical cry. He felt as though he was being driven completely mad. The rage burning inside him could explode at any moment.
Any normal man, imagining the humiliation his wife and children might be subjected to, would feel on the verge of collapse.
“What are you screaming for? Is screaming going to save your wife and kids?” The person on the other end smoked unhurriedly, savoring Luo Feiliang’s reaction — as if the more the other man suffered, the more pleased and excited they felt.
What an absolute psychopath.
“What exactly do you want? Can you stop provoking me like this?” Luo Feiliang collapsed onto the sofa, tears streaming down his face.
“As long as Su Rui is dead, you’ll release my wife and children — is that right?” Luo Feiliang said in a low, heavy voice: “Su Rui flew a plane into the Yamamoto Building in the East and brought it down. There’s no way he could have survived that.”
“The Yamamoto Building may have collapsed, but I have no evidence whatsoever to prove that Su Rui is dead. Unless you put Su Rui’s corpse in front of me and tell me he is definitively, without question, a dead man — only then will I release your wife and children.”
Luo Feiliang felt his lungs might burst with rage: “What if Su Rui’s body was blown to pieces by the plane?”
“Then you’d better find a piece of flesh and bring it to me for DNA testing — otherwise there’s no way I’m going to believe that guy is dead.” The voice on the other end began to rise as well: “Every day you can’t find him is another day you don’t get to see your wife and kids. A year without finding him means a year without seeing them. And if three years go by without any results, I guarantee you’ll be treated to a very stimulating and colorful scene.”
“You’re a devil! You’re a monster!” Luo Feiliang shouted twice, then broke down and pleaded in anguish: “I’m begging you, let them go, please let them go. They’re innocent. This is between us men — they shouldn’t be dragged into this…”
At this moment, Luo Feiliang finally bowed his head and began to beg.
To force a man of such fierce pride to humble himself and plead like this — it was truly more painful than killing him.
“Hahahahaha! I just love watching people beg me!” Hearing Luo Feiliang’s pleas, the voice on the other end broke into wild, unhinged laughter.
“You hate me, don’t you? No — you shouldn’t hate me. You should hate Su Rui. If it weren’t for him, your wife and children wouldn’t be in this situation. Pour every last drop of your hatred onto him. As long as you direct your hatred at him, your wife and children’s safety will be guaranteed to the greatest possible extent. I know you’ve always been firmly in Su Rui’s camp — so where you go from here is your choice to make.”
With that, the call ended.
Luo Feiliang lay on the sofa, staring helplessly at the ceiling, his eyes filled with pain.
“Can anyone tell me what I should do? Can anyone help me? Anyone at all!”
Luo Feiliang kept crying out in a low voice inside his office, but no one could answer him.
…………
In another dim room, indicator lights blinked all around. Shangguan Mo sat in the middle of a cluster of equipment, wearing headphones, listening carefully to something, the sharp gleam in his eyes never once fading.
“Chief, I’m sorry. I tapped your call.”
He let out a long sigh, set down the headphones, and sat in silence for a long time.
