Chapter 121: Enchantment Enthusiasts Research Group
by karlmaks“Those are just small things, not valuable. Donna, why don’t you take a lesson from Betty and try to be a poised lady?” Borg said with envy, looking at the polite and graceful Betty.
Donna pouted. She had seen how “ladylike” Betty could be and chose not to comment.
Betty, with the Grimoire disguised as a brooch pinned to her flat chest, suppressed her exuberant mood. After curtsying to the people present, she said, “I haven’t seen Donna in a long time. I would like to go to my room and chat with her.”
“Go ahead. Be sure to entertain Donna well.” The Chief Magistrate waved his hand with authority, then invited Borg to sit down to discuss the current situation in the Northern March.
Meanwhile, Betty gracefully took Donna’s hand, leading her into the room. She immediately exclaimed loudly, “Little sister Donna, long time no see! I missed you so much!”
“Keep your voice down! Do you care about your lady image? Aren’t you afraid of being disciplined by the Chief Magistrate? Also, we were born on the same day!” Donna said in a low voice, looking at Betty with worry. Behind her, the runes of the single-sided soundproofing array flickered brightly.
“Don’t worry about that! No one outside can hear us here. Besides, I was born a quarter of an hour earlier than you!” Betty stood on a small stool, hands on her hips in a very unladylike manner, meeting Donna’s gaze.
Donna opened her mouth, then simply said softly, “Alright, alright. Come down first. Can we talk quietly?”
Under Donna’s calming efforts, Betty stepped down from the stool. She looked up at Donna and said, “Weren’t you always envious that I could move objects remotely? Now you can too!”
“Really?” Donna and Betty grew up together. Donna had discovered Betty’s special ability when they were around 10. This was their little secret.
Donna had always envied Betty’s superhuman ability. She always believed that Betty’s family must possess some kind of Divine Descendant bloodline, just like in the romantic epics.
“Stop thinking about Divine Descendants! I am of pure mortal descent. My state is quite rare; I am a naturally Mental Overdriven Specialist—a very, very unique talent!” Betty happily raised her small hands, gesturing a large circle as she spoke excitedly.
“I have prepared a gift for you. Become my junior on the path of Magic. We will embark on a great adventure together.” Before Donna could figure out what was going on, she saw Betty remove the complicated, beautiful brooch from her chest and place it in Donna’s hand.
The moment the intricate, beautiful brooch touched Donna’s hand, Donna instantly froze. Her expression became vacant.
Betty closed her eyes, carefully perceiving with her mental power. She wanted to observe the process of the Grimoire covenant. From Betty’s perspective, Mana flowed out of the brooch, covering Donna’s entire body.
Subsequently, the Mana concentrated in Donna’s brain. The brooch dissolved into liquid, drawing a portion of mental power and blood from Donna. The Mana then dissipated, and Donna collapsed unconscious onto Betty’s bedroom floor.
Noon. Donna woke up groggily. Before she could speak, Betty pinched her nose and force-fed her a large bowl of red and green sticky liquid.
“What did you feed me? It’s so fishy!” Donna complained weakly, still dizzy.
“Black Gold Toad Slime. It’s a magical material discovered by the Enchanted Apprentices. It works miraculously for recovering mental trauma!” Betty said, smiling.
“What… gags…”
Afterward, under Betty’s guidance, Donna learned to use the Grimoire and accepted the Lesser Permanent Mental Blessing, boosting her overall mental power into the Mental Overdrive state.
In the following days, Donna gradually began practicing the Five-Step Meditation Method. Just then, she encountered a strange slacker who was staring at her blankly.
Bayen, transformed into Yorick the Slacker, did not stop. He returned home immediately, continuing to meditate and research Anazir’s Dice. The next day, he changed his appearance and quietly approached Donna’s residence.
Bayen activated Lesser Super Vision Guidance, following Donna from a distance.
This stealthy perception spell does not emit Mana. Instead, it uses a more mysterious connection to track the target, making it very hard to detect.
Betty noticed that Donna’s mental power had finally reached 1 Mental Power Unit. She successfully taught Donna the Minimal Meditation Spell and the Magic Missile, and managed to convince Donna to stay home for a few more days until her mental power was sufficient.
The exchange for the Lesser Mana Fluctuation Concealment spell now required no points. Betty immediately had Donna exchange for it, then taught her to memorize the rune structure.
“Your foundation is too weak. This rune structure is too complex for you. You won’t be able to memorize it just by rote,” Betty said, hands on her hips, lamenting.
“I will try harder to memorize it. I will definitely succeed!” Donna said firmly. She did not want to be caught due to an inability to conceal her Mana fluctuations.
“You will follow me for the next few days. I will cast the spell on you daily and tutor you in Logic and Mathematics! You can slowly research the Grimoire yourself. Make good use of the examination function on the sixth page.” Betty suggested to Donna.
“Speaking of which, have you ever been suspicious? The famous city-state scholar, Ace, who has gone missing—he wrote Logic Book (Volume One) and Elementary Mathematics. Since we are bound by the covenant not to speak of these things, this information essentially discloses Ace’s identity as at least a Wizard, but we must conceal it from the outside world!” Donna said, frowning.
“It is possible, and he might even be the Torch-Bearer. Otherwise, who could have researched and developed the Elementary Mathematics specifically for studying runes? Thinking about this is useless. The Torch-Bearer is likely testing us, observing us.”
“He is aggressively spreading the Grimoire and developing us Wizard Apprentices. He surely has his goals. We just need to be patient. Regardless, we are on the same side as him.” Betty laughed and waved her hand, dismissing the concern.
Bayen, tracking Donna, found himself at the Chief Magistrate’s villa. His heart tightened. He activated Lesser Mana Sensitivity and observed that a room on the second floor of the villa had a strong white glow.
“It is almost certain that the Chief Magistrate’s home has Mana fluctuations. I can deduce there is at least one Wizard Apprentice in the house. I must find a way to meet them.”
Bayen touched the place where his white beard used to be, now nonexistent after the transformation, and laughed awkwardly.
That night, Bayen, transformed into a black cat, continued to observe the villa. The Lesser Transformation Spell had a short duration. He had to recast the spell every 12 hours and had just finished casting.
The aging black cat, looking anthropomorphic, yawned. Just as he was about to leave, he saw a window on the second floor of the villa open.
“I have already cast a Suggestion Spell on my family. They won’t wake up until dawn. Let’s hurry, we must leave! The gathering is about to begin!”
