    Chapter Index

The man was around thirty years old, very dilapidated, and a notorious slacker in the neighborhood. His parents died young, and no girl wanted to marry him. He loved wandering around looking for excitement and was known by the neighbors as Yorick the Slacker. Few people were willing to speak to him.

Bayen was very satisfied with him. As night fell, he used cat hair as a Casting Material, transformed into a cat, and slipped into Yorick’s dilapidated home.

He did not use any charm spells; in fact, he wasn’t very adept at using them. He simply violently knocked Yorick unconscious, tied him up, and then used the Lesser Spell Mud-to-Stone to create a small underground cellar in Yorick’s home. He made ventilation holes, lined the floor with dry straw, and imprisoned Yorick inside.

“I apologize, Yorick. I will let you out alive when I leave this place.” Bayen muttered softly.

Bayen took out a prepared metal syringe. He sterilized it with fire and drew a tube of blood from Yorick. He had learned this method of syringe use and sterilization with fire at the Cimali Hospital.

Thinking of Cimali Port, Bayen sighed wistfully. It was indeed a beautiful city, with a unique charm and fiery dances. Unfortunately, it had been drawn into the conflict of the Deities. The entire city had transformed into Half-Merfolk, becoming a tragic sacrifice.

He used Yorick’s blood as a Casting Material, successfully transformed into Yorick, and put on Yorick’s clothes.

Bayen wrinkled his nose at the thick smell of sweat on Yorick’s clothes.

“From now on, I am Yorick the Slacker.”

He concealed the cellar and etched a Sound Dampening Rune Array onto it. After completing all this, Bayen sighed in relief and finally sat down to meditate peacefully.

The meditation method he used was not entirely consistent with the one in the Grimoire. Instead, he had incorporated unique rune structures based on his own experiences.

This rune structure could greatly enhance perception. The same meditation achieved a more powerful perceptive effect.

The sky gradually turned pale gray. Bayen stopped meditating. His mental power and Mana were extremely abundant, and he felt refreshed, having completely shaken off the fatigue and despondency of the past few days.

Bayen cautiously took out a bone-made dice from his bosom and carefully perceived it with his mental power. This was his greatest acquisition in Cimali and one of the important reasons the Merfolk were chasing him.

It was the Wonder Anazir’s Dice, a tribal artifact of the Merfolk Kalli Tribe, passed down through generations of Merfolk priests. It possessed the Authority of detection, limited precognition, and identification.

Legend says that Anazir, the Merfolk’s Hero, had a partial bloodline of the God of Prophecy and was skilled in precognition Authority. He had carved the dice from the skull of a high-level Monster from the seabed and often used it as a tool to detect good and bad fortune.

Over time, the dice had also been imbued with Anazir’s Authority, gaining many miraculous effects.

Bayen heard a rumor in Cimali that a massive Storm Trench lay in the southeastern sea area, which was extremely dangerous.

Legend claimed that someone had found the correct route. Passing the trench led to an archipelago on the other side, a paradise for Monsters, which also possessed large amounts of exposed gold and silver ore.

Driven by a yearning for Monsters, runes, and new knowledge, Bayen sought out an adventurous crew willing to explore the Storm Trench for a route to the archipelago.

They failed to find the correct route. Most of the ships were lost to the sea. Bayen was fortunate to drift ashore on a desolate island.

Relying on his academic knowledge, Bayen determined the correct direction based on the sunrise, sunset, and the seasons. He built a simple wooden raft on the desolate island.

Here, he discovered a group of Merfolk who regularly came ashore for a ritual. Using the Lesser Transformation Spell he learned from the Grimoire, Bayen captured one Merfolk. He interrogated it day and night, studying the Merfolk language. After a few weeks, he had successfully learned most of it.

He quietly captured a few more Merfolk to confirm the authenticity of the language he had learned. He then killed all the Merfolk, used the Transformation Spell to transform into a Merfolk, and infiltrated the ritual procession.

Living among the Merfolk for six months, Bayen not only learned their language and customs but also gained access to a large number of water-attributed Monsters.

Through the Grimoire, he recorded and analyzed the Water Element Rune series, such as the Water Element Rune, Density Rune, Pressure Rune, and Nourishment Rune. He also independently developed a series of water-attributed spells.

Bayen discovered that the Density Rune was highly manipulable. It could increase or decrease density. By precisely adjusting the Density Rune, he could achieve his goal.

After nearly a thousand failed attempts, Bayen successfully figured out the precise adjustment pattern for the Density Rune and developed several spells using it.

Using the Lesser Water Element Rune and the Density Rune as the core, he developed Water Mist Spell, an obstacle spell that reduced water density, creating dense mist in a radius of 100 meters. If corresponding poison was added as a Casting Material, the spell would transform into a Poison Mist Spell.

Using the same Lesser Water Element Rune and Density Rune, but adjusting the Density Rune to increase density, he could create high-density Heavy Water.

When this Heavy Water Rune structure was combined with the Projection Rune, it became the Lesser Spell Heavy Water Missile. By adding different Monster toxins as Casting Materials, it could become different types of Heavy Water Missiles, such as Paralysis Heavy Water Missile, Dehydration Heavy Water Missile, or Poisonous Heavy Water Missile.

When this Heavy Water Rune structure was combined with the Flank Rune, it could create a continuous Heavy Water Cascade that lasted for several seconds.

Bayen then attempted to integrate the Acid Conversion Rune into the Water Element series. After several attempts, he succeeded. By using sulfur as a Casting Material, all water-attributed spells that incorporated the Acid Conversion Rune were additionally imbued with a strong corrosive effect.

There were many more possibilities and attempts he didn’t have time to research.

“This half-year living with the Merfolk tribe was truly fruitful.” Bayen took a Merfolk scale from his bag as a Casting Material and quietly cast a Lesser Transformation Spell on himself.

“After transforming into a Merfolk, I naturally gained the ability to live underwater. The Transformation Spell is truly useful. I have seen all the water-attributed Monsters I could, acquired a series of new runes, and independently developed a series of Spell Models. It is time to leave now.”

If the story had ended here, and Bayen had successfully returned to shore, the Bayen we see now would likely be a Wizard Apprentice specializing in Water Element spells.

However, a dramatic event occurred. The old Merfolk Priest who wielded Anazir’s Dice happened to visit the Merfolk tribe near the desolate island to host a grand ritual.

Bayen’s excellent performance as a transformed Merfolk—his efficiency and clear thinking—impressed the old Merfolk Priest. He took Bayen under his wing and commanded him to serve as his attendant.

No one knew what happened during those nights of service, only that afterward, Bayen managed to gain access to the miraculous dice, which he stole, transforming into the likeness of another Merfolk before fleeing.
