Chapter 700
by post_apiChapter 700: The Magus’s Target
Amy quietly used spells inside to search for traces of the Sunwell while Jesse observed the surroundings at the intersections of several bookshelves. Just as Vereesa had expected, few Magi or ordinary arcane scholars from Quel’Thalas came here to study Black Magic. After waiting half a day, Jesse only saw an old human mage slowly pass by a distant bookshelf—no elves appeared at all.
Dar’Khan was an anomaly, which greatly increased their chances of finding clues.
As the sky darkened, Amy hurried over and said, "I found it, Jesse—the Sunwell’s magical traces. They’re very strong."
Hearing this sent a sudden thrill through Jesse, as if he’d skipped countless steps to grab Kel’Thuzad’s tail directly.
"Where?"
"Follow me."
Jesse followed Amy past rows of bookshelves, gradually reaching a familiar spot. Wasn’t this where he’d come last time? The language section for Demonic studies.
It grew more recognizable.
"Here." Amy scanned the bookshelf, pulled out two thin volumes, and flipped through them. "These show the strongest traces. The elven Magus carrying Sunwell power must’ve focused on them for a long time, and it wasn’t long ago."
How was that possible?
Jesse stared at the book in Amy’s hand—wasn’t that the very record on Ered’ruin linguistic traits he’d studied before?
The Council of Tirisfal had scarce notes on this demonic tongue. These were among the few Doomguard language texts here. No mistake.
Was Amy tracking him? Did drinking from the Sunwell Aquarius lead the trail back to him? "Are you sure, Amy?" Jesse asked. "Are you tracking a Quel’dorai Magus, not… me?"
"You? Why?" Amy replied. "I know your magical aura, Jesse. Ah, you mean the Sunwell water? No, impossible. I can’t confuse human and elf magic. This trace isn’t yours."
A coincidence, then?
Suppose Dar’Khan Drathir wanted to study Ered’ruin—what for? Summoning a Doomguard? Unlikely. Summoning required Demonic chants, not fluency. Even low-tier Doomguards might’ve forgotten their ancient tongue.
"Did you come here earlier and read this?" Amy asked.
"Yes," Jesse nodded.
"Then…"
Amy’s expression turned doubtful. After a pause, she asked, "Why were you here?"
"To see if the Council of Tirisfal could translate a rare demonic language. But nothing…" Jesse trailed off.
Could Dar’Khan have come for the same reason? Did he possess that scroll too?
The scroll from Dethmoora, likely detailing Ulthalesh and its past wielder… The original was at the Reliquary. As a high-ranking Quel’Thalas Magus, Dar’Khan could easily access it through connections.
Especially as a scholar obsessed with Black Magic, demons, and necromancy… Someone at the Reliquary might’ve even flattered him by sharing it.
If he’d realized the untranslatable parts were Ered’ruin, visiting Dalaran made sense.
Was he hunting Ulthalesh?
Even if not initially, seeing Dethmoora’s scroll would spark ambition.
This ancient soul-harvesting artifact held immense dark power. Controlling it would eclipse titles like "High Magus"—Dar’Khan might scorn Quel’Thalas’s ranks entirely.
Still, Jesse knew he couldn’t yet gauge Dar’Khan’s full knowledge.
"What is it, Jesse?" Amy pressed.
"Chaotic thoughts," Jesse said. "Thank you, Amy—truly. This clue matters. Are you sure no similar traces exist elsewhere here?"
"Some linger in the Tirisfal demon summoning records over there, but weaker. I’m new to this spell—can’t confirm if they link to a Magus."
"Let’s check together."
At the shelf, Jesse examined the marked books but found nothing unusual.
If Dar’Khan left these traces too, he might’ve considered summoning a Doomguard to decipher Ered’ruin.
To clarify Dar’Khan’s intent, though, they’d need to visit Quel’Thalas.
Given Jesse and Vereesa’s past work for the Reliquary—plus Vereesa’s status as Ranger Lord and the Ranger-General’s sister—insiders might disclose document access details.
Hopefully.
The Grand Library stayed busy past midnight. Outside, Vereesa waited, rushing over as they emerged.
"Any results?"
"Found them," Amy nodded. "The Sunwell traces were clear enough."
"Amy, you’re a gifted mage," Vereesa remarked. "I tried sensing Sunwell energy out here earlier—Dalaran’s so saturated with Arcane, everything blurred together."
"Praise from a Quel’dorai? Rare honor." Amy smiled. "Glad I helped. You’re heading to Quel’Thalas next?"
"Yes," Vereesa said. "I’ll introduce Jesse to my sister properly."
"Then good luck—especially to you, Jesse." Amy added, "Now that you visit Dalaran freely, drop by anytime. My door’s open for help or chats."
"Absolutely," Jesse replied.
After seeing Amy to her dorm and confirming their spellcasting drew no attention, Jesse and Vereesa walked into the gardens.
"Dar’Khan might truly have no ties to Kel’Thuzad," Jesse said. "At least, the library clues don’t prove it."
"Another dead end?" Vereesa asked.
"But I found something else," Jesse said. "Dar’Khan could be hunting Ulthalesh—that demon weapon, remember? We’ll investigate in Quel’Thalas."
