Chapter 675: Different Ways of Doing Things

After leaving Larson’s clothing store, Jesse looked across at the Garden District.

Since he was already in the Mage Quarter, he decided to ask his teacher about fire magic.

Even though he was signed up for Protection School classes, Master Malin liked him enough to probably teach him fire control, right?

Malin was definitely the strongest Fire Mage in the Wizard’s Sanctum. Even in Dalaran, only the top fire masters could match him, as Andromath himself admitted.

With Jesse struggling to control fire, going to Malin for help made perfect sense.

Jesse knocked, made sure Malin was inside, and pushed the door open with the coin chest in hand. Malin looked at him and said, "Mr. Seso, you look very nice today."

Compared to when he vanished for half a year, people seemed much calmer about his return now.

"Master," Jesse put the chest on a small table nearby and said, "I came to learn… other spells."

"Ah, finally wanting to learn more," Malin said. "But it’s not free. Submit that Death Knight report quickly. The last Death Knights in Azeroth were wiped out by the Farstriders of Quel’Thalas, and I can’t count on the Silvermoon Magus with them to write a report. You’re our only hope."

"Working on it," Jesse scratched his head. "I have to go to Lordaeron soon. I’ll hand it in early next year when I’m back."

"Good," Malin sighed in relief. "At least there’s some hope. So, what do you want to learn?"

At first, Jesse meant to ask about controlling fire, but hearing Malin, he changed his mind.

"Could I learn the Blink Spell?" Jesse asked.

Malin shook his head. "First, you need to take Transmutation School classes and do well. The Wizard’s Sanctum won’t let me teach dangerous magic like Blink otherwise. Also…"

Jesse saw a conflicted look on Malin’s face, like he was biting back harsh words.

Probably another issue with Arcane talent.

"Don’t think learning Mage Armor means you’ll easily master Blink, Mr. Seso," Malin said. "Mage Armor is something you can get good at with hard work, so I let you try. But without talent in Transmutation, learning Blink could cause big disasters. It’s not like Counterspell, where failing isn’t a big deal. Even messing up Fireball is safer than Blink."

"If you throw a wild Fireball here, worst case, you blow up the room and ruin my stuff. But I can cast a Fire Protection Barrier fast to save us both. Other things don’t matter. But if you try to Blink through that door behind you… I can’t stop you from getting half your body stuck in the wall. Honestly, even Master Antonidas couldn’t fix that."

    "Alright… Master," Jesse gave in.

Malin smiled softly and whispered, "But I know demons can move fast using shadows, almost like Blink, though not as smooth. I don’t get shadows well, but you see my point, Mr. Seso. We all have different strengths—no need to force what doesn’t come easy."

Was the old mage talking about Shadowstep?

The power of the Satyrs in Maraudon.

Right, Molofeel had some shadow-moving skill, but her Shadowstep was more like going invisible and sneaking up fast.

Anyway, Malin’s words made Jesse think he should ask Molofeel or Saenor about learning the Satyrs’ tricks.

Thinking of shadows boosted Jesse’s confidence; he felt bad about pushing for Blink.

Sometimes he felt too slow in fights. He was quicker than most his age, but nothing like Vereesa.

He remembered her dashing with a dagger at the burning Orc tower—unnaturally fast… and that was after waves of Orc attacks in Grim Batol, disasters from Deathwing, and fighting Nekros’s demon form, when she was already worn out.

"So, what about fire magic?" Jesse asked. "Master, I learned the Scorch Curse before, and at the Dark Portal, I picked up Fireball from another Evocation mage, Mr. Fyodor Dostoevsky. But my fire control’s poor. I need your help."

"Fire magic? Sure," the old mage nodded, checking his watch. "But I’ve got a meeting with Master Andromath soon—about Grim Batol—so not today. Come back another time, and we’ll talk."

    "Grim Batol?" Jesse asked.

Malin said, "Dwarves reported scary things happening there. Ironforge hasn’t said much yet… or maybe they have. Master Andromath might be sharing news. I’ll tell you when you return. You helped with the Dragonmaw Orc hunt and did great work—you deserve to know."

Jesse started to speak but stopped. Finally, he said, "Okay, I’ll come back later." Malin glanced at him, seeming to notice something off, but stayed quiet.

"Have a good afternoon, Mr. Seso."

"You too, Master." Jesse nodded and left the study.
