Chapter 562
by post_apiChapter 562: Earthsong Falls
Unending Breath, as the name suggests, is a way to breathe like a demon does.
Of course, Jesse didn’t know if this was really how demons breathe, especially since Molofeel didn’t seem to breathe at all.
But no matter what it’s called, this is a spell that allows the caster to breathe underwater. Moreover, this version of Unending Breath, improved after comparing it with the Demonic materials Zardeth gave them, should be much more reliable than the versions Jesse just heard from Orcs or demons and jotted down in Zardeth’s spellbook.
While out at sea, Jesse was always focused on transcribing the spell from his memories of Gorefiend and wanted to quickly figure out the final few lines.
And now that he knew the next line was Death Coil, even though he hadn’t had a chance to practice it yet, there were only a few unclear sentences left, which were likely just some meaningless mutterings of Teron Gorefiend.
Upon reaching Kalimdor, the chaos and danger along the way made him forget to look at the spellbook Zardeth had given him. However, at that moment, Jesse realized they had reached the deepest part of Maraudon and if he didn’t learn quickly, there could be big trouble.
In this sacred place, there are many deep underground lakes, where all sorts of scary monsters live. These underground lakes are fed by underground rivers, similar to the stream that Jesse and his friends followed down.
The many underground rivers meet in the deepest lake, and if the lake ever rises to submerge all of Maraudon, there must be an exit leading outside.
On the western edge of Desolace is a coast, perhaps nourished by the life energy and water sources from the ocean due to its proximity. It looks more normal than the deeper parts of Desolace, with grassy beaches and sparse forests by the sea. The underground lake here likely connects to the ocean.
This is their lifeline.
So, Jesse must quickly learn Unending Breath to help everyone find a way out in deep water, and even deal with enemies.
Jesse is already very skilled in the gestures for Unending Breath that Zardeth summarized, as he had used them before.
He softly recited the Demonic characters written by Sorrel, recalling how Malin taught him to channel magic and enhance himself with Arcane Intellect.
Greed glanced over, watching Jesse repeat the same things over and over while chewing on dried mushrooms, asking, "What are you doing?"
"Faha, Hengeitis…" Jesse murmured, looking up at Greed and saying, "Perfect timing, Greed, come with me."
Greed stood up dazedly and the two of them pushed aside the vines covering the hole to reach the edge of the pool outside. They glanced around at the spacious area, the misty stone walls in the distance, and the vast expanse of water.
Jesse splashed water on his face to wake himself up, shaking off the tiredness and exhaustion from the journey, and then dunked his head in the water.
Intentionally breathing underwater… Jesse had a strange feeling of wanting to commit suicide, but he eventually overcame his mental barrier and tried to take a breath.
Thinking the water would immediately rush into his nostrils and chest, drowning him, but this time, it felt as if Shadow Magic distorted the water into breathable air.
So, is this using the principles of alchemy? Transforming: water element into air element?
After catching his breath, Jesse lifted his head again and tried to continue breathing.
Gazing at the quiet cliff in front and the dense vines and bushes on the cliff wall, there was no time left for him to ponder how this magic worked.
Jesse looked at Greed and said, "I will chant a spell at you… then you dunk your head in the water and try to breathe."
"Breathing underwater?" Greed said, "You know this strange magic? I only know of such potions."
"Just try it and you’ll see," said Jesse.
"Did you just learn how to do it?"
"Just a moment ago."
"Darn…" Greed muttered as he approached the water, saying, "Forget it, let’s do it."
"Fah ha, Henkin Tees!" Jesse chanted a spell and pointed towards Greed.
"I feel a strange taste of Shadow Magic." Greed frowned, touched his nose, and asked, "Should I try it in the water now?"
"Yes, now," said Jesse.
The dwarf leaned over the edge of the pond, dipped his head into the water. After a while, bubbles emerged, he grumbled, then lifted his head and said, "It really works… it really works!"
Just mastering the dwarf isn’t enough. To make sure everything goes smoothly, Jesse must make sure he can successfully cast spells on others too. He called Vereesa and Mosa out, cast spells on them one by one, and the effects were good.
Vereesa was not surprised by this magic, as various spell uses were quite common in Quel’Thalas. However, she was worried about the possibility of having to fight underwater later on.
After all, she wouldn’t be able to shoot arrows underwater, and her movements would be severely affected.
Although Mosa had been quite reluctant towards Shadow Magic, Dark Energy, and demonic power before, when Jesse cast Unending Breath on her, she didn’t feel too happy about this dark magic.
After taking a few breaths underwater and shaking off the water from her horns and fur, Mosa’s expression clearly showed that she was enjoying this feeling.
However, Druids shouldn’t easily transform into creatures like seals or sea lions and swim in the water, right? The half-hearted Druid Tauren hunter in front of them probably wouldn’t be able to do that.
After giving all the team members who needed to breathe a taste of Unending Breath, Jesse felt a bit fatigued. In addition to previously assisting Greed against the Satyr’s siege and facing off against Vyletongue now… he could feel that his mana was severely depleted. Within just two to three hours, the Living Ice Crystals were not enough to fully replenish his mana.
"Do we still have any Mana Potions?" Jesse asked.
"You gave me one earlier, and there’s still one left, Jesse," the dwarf handed over a potion bottle, and the hunter patted his pockets, saying, "I have one here."
"Vereesa, give me a bottle," Jesse said. "Greed, leave the remaining one for Mosa. Let’s divide the Nature Protection Potion and Invisibility Potion, pack our belongings securely, and then we can set off."
A group of people followed the sound of the waterfall as they walked forward. It was quite quiet here, except for the sound of water and the faint wind from above, almost nothing else could be heard.
Greed kept looking up at the blurry light from above, while examining the surrounding cave walls as if planning to climb out from here.
Walking along the pool for a while, the sound of the waterfall became louder. It was then that Jesse saw something lying by the pool ahead.
The others also noticed, everyone stared over there until they got closer and then breathed a small sigh of relief.
It was a huge green Snapjaw, possibly as big as a domestic pig. Its shell on the back looked like a giant stone, but it was lying there, its body moving with the rhythm of breathing, making these people think it was another stone elemental monster waiting to attack them here.
The Snapjaw was eating plants at the edge of the shore, totally unconcerned about the strangers behind it, as if they didn’t exist.
In the game, encountering this kind of Snapjaw meant they were very close to the tomb of Zaetar guarded by Princess Theradras.
