Chapter 545
by post_apiChapter 545: How to Speak With Centaurs
Jesse glanced at the Tauren next to him and said, "Maybe we should try to make contact with the Centaurs, find a way in, and see if they’re willing to let us in directly."
Vereesa thought for a moment, then explained Jesse’s meaning to Mosa who quickly responded with some temper.
"She said she knew that someone like you, who works with demons, has no moral boundaries at all," Vereesa said.
Jesse looked at Vereesa and felt like she was expressing her own thoughts through translating Mosa’s words.
"What does Mosa think?" he asked.
Vereesa relayed the words of the others, Mosa thought for a while, looked towards the direction of the valley, and said she agreed with Greed’s idea, but they didn’t have to enter from above, they could sneak into the valley bit by bit using the complex terrain inside.
She believed Greed and Vereesa were excellent hunters, skilled at concealing their tracks, while she could transform into a big cat form, making it easier to hide her shape.
In her opinion, Jesse could stay outside Maraudon with the two demons, waiting for their good news, letting the three of them sneak in and investigate.
After hearing Vereesa relay Mosa’s opinion, Greed immediately said, "Put the one among us who is best at dealing with demons, instead of cooling their heels outside while dealing with a hidden dangerous demon? It’s not that I don’t appreciate Mosa’s opinion…"
"Indeed," Vereesa said as she conversed with Mosa again, their tone of voice becoming more and more intense, even bordering on an argument.
Jesse had never seen Mosa and Vereesa argue since they met at Thousand Needles.
Jesse waited for their argument to calm down and then said, "Actually, I’m not just a foolish spellcaster. But I think we should try to communicate with the Centaur first. I suggest we keep the option of sneaking in as a last resort. If they refuse us entry, then we can consider sneaking in. If that fails, we can think of other ways."
Mosa seemed a little angry sitting by the side. Even though she couldn’t understand, she certainly felt the conversation heading in a direction she didn’t like.
"Why don’t we talk about the approach, Jesse? How can we convince the Centaur to let us in?" Greed asked. "It can’t be as simple as buying tickets. We don’t have anything the Centaur would want in exchange."
"Who said we have nothing?" Jesse replied. "Our swords and spells can be traded, right? We can introduce ourselves as demon hunters, offering to help the Centaur deal with demons they are facing, and in return, we ask for a suitable reward."
"Ah!" Greed nodded. "That sounds promising. But what kind of reward do you plan to ask from the Centaur?"
"Treasures, coins, anything they can offer," Jesse answered.
"Jesse is right. A reward can make our offer more believable," Vereesa agreed.
"The reward itself is important," Jesse added. "If we come back empty-handed in the end, we can’t return with nothing, can we?"
"Okay… What about the language?" Vereesa said, "I don’t know if there are Centaurs who can speak Tauren or Kaldorei languages."
She looked at Mosa beside her, sighed, and asked something. Mosa stayed silent for a long time before finally speaking and explaining to Vereesa.
Vereesa said, "Mosa mentioned that some Centaur priestesses who know wind magic have inherited the ancient Kaldorei language. Maybe we really have a chance to communicate with them."
At that moment, Mosa said something that was obviously not Elvish, then she explained it in Elvish.
Vereesa expressed gratitude and then repeated that sentence word by word, trying to memorize it. She said, "This is in the Centaur language – looking for someone who knows Kaldorei language."
"Since she understands the Centaur language, why doesn’t Mosa help us translate?" the dwarf asked.
Jesse looked at him and said, "Obviously, do you think Centaurs would communicate with Tauren?"
Vereesa sighed and said, "I think Mosa also does not want to say much to the Centaurs."
"Help me tell her," Jesse said to Vereesa, "We are already very grateful for bringing us here, but we are outnumbered by them. It would benefit us to avoid conflict. If Mosa is unwilling to enter Maraudon with us, I understand. After all, I believe the Centaurs would not allow a Tauren into their sacred place, which could lead to more hostility towards us and put Mosa in danger."
Vereesa and Mosa explained to Tauren following Jesse’s suggestion. Tauren glanced at Jesse, then at Greed. Suddenly, he transformed into a big cat and approached the dwarf step by step.
"Is she agreeing to go in with us?" Greed asked.
"It’s normal for a Wildhammer hunter with a mountain lion helper, right?" Vereesa smiled.
"That makes sense!" Greed laughed loudly, patting Mosa’s back. Mosa gently nudged his hand.
"But what about these horns…?" Jesse tried to touch the big cat’s head, but Mosa snarled and took a step back.
"Sorry…" he reluctantly pulled back his hand, saying, "I meant, will these horns be a giveaway for the Centaurs?"
"It’s simple." Greed took off his helmet and placed it on Mosa’s head.
Surprisingly, the demon helmet, which was a bit large for the dwarf, securely fit on the big cat’s head, covering the horns perfectly.
Vereesa chuckled and said, "An unfamiliar dwarf leading a helmet-wearing big cat, strange on top of strange somehow feels normal. Since that’s the case, let me go talk to them."
"We’re both following behind you in cloaks, pretending to be your foreign mercenary entourage." Jesse said, "You can pretend to be a Kaldorei."
"Really?" Vereesa asked skeptically, "The Magi said the Kaldorei here are much bigger and stronger than us."
Greed said, "Do you think the Centaur can tell the difference? Remember, the elves of Kalimdor have been hiding in the shadows all this time, we haven’t even met one yet! The Centaur might not have seen many elves themselves. I’ve heard stories of the ancient Kaldorei, they were said to look like you, with long pointed ears, pale hair, beautiful clothes, eyes sparkling with magic, speaking elvish, and walking in that distinct elven manner. You fit the description perfectly."
After listening to Greed’s talk, Vereesa’s expression became very complicated, unsure whether to agree or refute him immediately.
"That’s pretty much what he meant." Jesse nodded.
