Chapter 529
by post_apiChapter 529: Meeting on a Narrow Path
Early in the morning, a few people continued on their journey, walking along the steep cliffs all day. As the sky darkened, Mosa led them up a small hill.
After walking for a while around a stone cliff, Jesse saw an ancient totem pole standing tall against the front wall, left behind by the Tauren.
Mosa glanced at the totem, then turned to Vereesa and said something. Vereesa then told Jesse and Greed behind her, "The path ahead will be steep, Mosa reminds us to be careful."
Greed patted his chest and said, "She’s worried for herself, but I’m a dwarf from Aerie Peak!"
Vereesa sighed helplessly and said, "I won’t translate this one…"
They walked past the totem and continued forward. The path became steeper, and soon Jesse had to move closely to the cliff, sidestepping upwards.
Greed lay on the cliff, occasionally peeking down.
Jesse was thinking clearly. He knew if he looked down, he would feel weak in the legs, so he decided not to look.
When they got here, the two women were more at ease walking. Vereesa stepped lightly and easily up the path, while the Tauren, despite their heavy hooves and large stature, walked skillfully on the narrow trail as if it were flat ground, moving forward slowly without needing to hold onto the cliff walls.
Molofeel, being small with hooves good for climbing, wasn’t afraid at all. But because Greed, who was hesitating, was blocking the way, they could only walk intermittently, occasionally letting out a sigh.
"Don’t be impatient, demon!" Greed gritted his teeth and said, "Either go ahead and stay with your master!"
Molofeel glanced at him. Greed hugged the cliff wall tightly, watching as the succubus lightly jumped ahead, landing steadily on the narrow path and continuing forward.
"These tall-hooved monsters!" Greed cursed.
"Aren’t you a dwarf living in the mountains?" Jesse asked.
Greed immediately replied, "We only move into the high mountains after fixing the stairs and tunnels. We’re not lazy like these Tauren! And they dig tunnels so narrow…"
"There’s an ancient elevator to the west," Vereesa said. "Mosa mentioned that long ago, when the Tauren inhabited this area, they built a huge structure for easy travel between the grasslands and rocky areas. However, with the Tauren gradually losing to the Centaur in war, they couldn’t protect it anymore, so the elevator was destroyed by the Quilboar."
Just then, Mosa abruptly said something short, stopping Vereesa who was following behind.
She looked ahead on the boardwalk, and Jesse looked over too.
Ahead, at a blurry height, a strong figure blocked the way, completely blocking the narrow boardwalk.
"Quilboar," Vereesa said.
"What does it intend to do?" Greed asked. Just then, something swooshed from above, hitting Greed’s foot on the cliff and falling below.
"This darn…" Greed glanced down, lifted his foot and said, "Almost got hit out of nowhere."
Mosa searched around, as if looking for a suitable sized rock. Vereesa patted Mosa’s shoulder to signal her to move, then she took out her bow and aimed at the dark shadow ahead…
The elf let go, the arrow cutting through the air with a faint sharp sound entering the morning mist. The figure on high ground shuddered, slowly tilting and falling into the cliff.
Mosa looked excited and surprised at Vereesa, clearly not expecting the elf’s archery skills to be so strong. But then, a sharp pig’s squeal came from below the cliff, followed by a muffled thud.
The joyful look on Mosa’s face was extinguished by the squeal. She whispered something, then ran towards the high ground, while Vereesa turned back to the people behind and said, "We need to be faster!"
Jesse and Greed immediately forgot about the height of the cliff and ran up together.
Mosa led Vereesa and a group of people to run quickly towards the high platform, kicking down many rocks and dust along the way. At this moment, the sound of Quilboars could be heard from the distance of the valley.
"Darn it," Vereesa cursed under her breath.
Turning around a cliff, sure enough, there were already several Quilboars on the platform ahead. They heard the footsteps from this side and all aimed various weapons at this side, pushing and shoving towards here.
These creatures had a sharp mouth full of thorns, with long fangs raised high in front. They were covered in armor and metal pieces collected from somewhere, holding various styles of stone and metal weapons.
They hunched their backs, with the mane standing tall. Their arms were short and thick, with large palms and claws that looked grotesquely demon-like.
The leading Quilboar ran down from the heights and collided with Mosa, who was in the front. Mosa grabbed the opponent’s shield and wrestled, even though the Quilboar was much shorter, it howled and struggled, not falling behind at all in this moment.
"Let me go to the front!" Greed grabbed Jesse and said.
Jesse blocked him while saying, "Don’t you dare grab me, what if you pull me down?! You’re too fat to squeeze through! Help from behind!"
"I can’t throw the hammer, if I blow up the boardwalk, none of us can cross, darn it!" Greed cursed under his breath.
This reminded Jesse that he wanted to use a Shadow Bolt or a Fireball on the Quilboars ahead, but if he did, the Fireball might blast a hole in the boardwalk, slowing them down. His Shadow Bolt would also leave a large area of shadow corruption on the boardwalk, just like when he practiced in the basement before.
They didn’t bring any Shadow Protection Potion. Even if they defeated the Quilboars, forcing their way through would surely come at a cost.
After a moment’s thought, Jesse cast a Fear spell directly at the Quilboar in front of him.
The Quilboar who was arguing with Mosa tensed up, his angry roar turning into a panicked cry. His movements became erratic and Mosa pushed him over the cliff edge.
Seeing the spell taking effect, Jesse started casting Fear spells one by one at the Quilboars who held bows, slingshots, or appeared weak-willed, forcing them to disrupt their formation.
The Quilboars on the narrow boardwalk immediately became a mess, with one Quilboar with a short bow aiming behind stumbling back after his fearful companion from the front took a step back and bumped into him, causing them both to slip and fall into the deep valley.
Meanwhile, Greed simply picked up rocks, chunks of dirt, or stones thrown by the enemy and tossed them back. The dwarfs’ throws were strong and powerful, and if they hit accurately, even a Quilboar’s thick skull could be cracked, causing them to wail in pain.
However, what surprised Jesse the most was Mosa standing at the front.
