Chapter 229: Inquiry at the Ancestral Land
by SurroundedbyBooksChen Fei sat cross-legged in the courtyard.
Lately, the surrounding area had grown increasingly lively. Strange and sinister cultivators gathered in large numbers—it was clear something was brewing.
Chen Fei had almost no emotional connection to the Chen family. So even if these people were targeting the Chen clan, he felt no particular emotion about it. He was just waiting—waiting for Qin Shuang to appear!
That day might not be far off.
But when Qin Shuang finally did see him, what kind of expression would she wear? It would certainly be a sight to behold.
“You wretched woman, don’t worry—even for the sake of the child, I won’t let you die easily!” A glint of killing intent flashed in Chen Fei’s eyes, which he quickly concealed.
Just then, a knock came at the door.
Chen Fei opened it to see a burly man standing there. His eyes were entirely blood-red, and his face was full of vicious meat. Anyone with a timid heart might have been startled by his intimidating appearance.
“Brat, get out of here! This isn’t a place for you to live!” the man barked arrogantly.
Chen Fei raised an eyebrow, unsure whether this was a test from Qi Meinang or if the man simply had this temperament.
Either way, it made no difference to Chen Fei.
“Get lost,” he said coldly, spitting out a single word.
The man was stunned, momentarily at a loss as he stared at Chen Fei, unsure if Chen Fei had actually said that to him!
“You’ve got some nerve! Daring to yell at your Grandpa Yan!” the man laughed in rage, pointing a trembling finger at Chen Fei.
Chen Fei looked up and sneered, “You? Call yourself ‘Grandpa’?”
“You brat! Don’t be so shameless! I’ll—”
Before he could finish, Chen Fei had already made his move.
This kind of early-stage Xuan Realm trash had no right to act arrogant before him!
“Since your mouth is so filthy, let me clean it for you!”
Chen Fei raised his hand and slapped Yan Zheng across the face.
Yan Zheng was completely dumbfounded by the slap, instinctively holding his cheek with a shocked expression. “Y-You actually hit me?”
Chen Fei didn’t respond.
Instead, he unleashed a flurry of slaps like a rainstorm, sending Yan Zheng flying and crashing heavily onto the ground.
Chen Fei then used his Evil Character Seal to condense a blood-colored orb. Even Wang would have been fooled if he had seen this orb.
“You want to die? Then I’ll help you!”
As Chen Fei’s words fell, the blood orb shot toward the brute.
Thin blood-red threads of energy wrapped around the man’s body, draining his strength and leaving him helpless. Terrified, he turned and shouted, “Young Mistress Qi, help! Save me!”
Qi Meinang appeared, raising her hand to sever the blood threads with ease. She then smiled sweetly at Chen Fei. “Fellow Daoist Chen, we’re all on the same side. No need to take it so far.”
After all, demonic cultivators were unpredictable in temperament.
Though Chen Fei had acted fairly cordial toward her, Qi Meinang wasn’t surprised by his sudden outburst. She quickly stepped in as the mediator.
“This man came here without knowing the situation and told me to leave. I’d really like to see what gave him that confidence,” Chen Fei said coldly.
Qi Meinang turned toward Yan Zheng, a trace of disappointment flashing through her eyes.
Though the man looked strong and full of brute power, he was actually useless. He hadn’t even lasted one move against Chen Fei!
“Please don’t be angry, Fellow Daoist Chen!” Qi Meinang said quickly, then turned and scolded Yan Zheng. “Yan Zheng! You know the rules. Don’t disrupt the peace among our people!”
Upon hearing this, Yan Zheng’s face twisted like he’d swallowed a bitter gourd. He grudgingly pulled out his storage pouch.
“Young Mistress Qi, this…” he muttered pitifully.
But Qi Meinang didn’t give him a chance to speak. She snatched the pouch from his hand and tossed it directly to Chen Fei.
“Fellow Daoist Chen, according to our rules, this was Yan Zheng’s mistake. This is his compensation to you.”
Of course, Chen Fei could tell they were putting on a show.
But when he looked inside the storage pouch, his mood instantly lifted.
These demonic cultivators might be inhuman—but their rules weren’t bad!
Still, Chen Fei kept a stern face and nodded. “If there’s a next time, I won’t hold back.”
With that, he turned and went back inside, shutting the door.
Qi Meinang gazed at Chen Fei’s retreating figure, a distant and unreadable expression in her eyes.
Yan Zheng leaned toward her. “Young Mistress…”
“I’ll compensate you for the loss. You can rest easy now,” she replied without even looking back.
Yan Zheng beamed with joy, then left in a hurry, not daring to even glance at Chen Fei’s courtyard.
Only by clashing directly with Chen Fei could one understand how terrifying he was.
Especially when the blood threads from the orb wrapped around him—it felt like his very life essence was being torn from his flesh.
He had truly felt the fear of death.
Why would he dare linger any longer?
Back in his room, Chen Fei had clearly heard the entire exchange between Qi Meinang and Yan Zheng. He let out a cold laugh. “Still don’t trust me, huh?”
But this test had its benefits. Now, at least, they wouldn’t doubt his identity.
And Qi Meinang’s eagerness to test him was another sign—something was definitely happening to the Chen family!
Though he had no affection for the Chen clan, this body’s original owner was part of their bloodline.
That thought stirred some complicated feelings in his heart.
He thought back to the illusion in the Fengluo Temple.
That pulsating, blood-red egg was no benevolent thing.
Could it be tied to the Chen bloodline?
The Chen family was descended from ancient immortals. Could that egg be the remnant of an ancient immortal?
It wasn’t impossible.
After all, ancient cultivation methods were often even stranger than today’s demonic arts.
If some old monster was using the Chen bloodline to extend its lifespan, it would be no small threat.
Bloodline matters were nothing to take lightly!
The answers might only lie within the ancestral lands of the Chen family.
There was no need to rush.
But among the items Yan Zheng had with him, one in particular caught Chen Fei’s attention.
More accurately, it was the Void Heaven Cauldron that showed interest.
Chen Fei took out a pitch-black wooden stick. It looked ordinary, but it was unusually heavy.
As he weighed it in his hand, a powerful suction force suddenly emerged—
The stick crumbled to powder, which was absorbed by the Void Heaven Cauldron.
Then, a towering tree sigil began to appear faintly on the surface of the cauldron.
But the stick was too small.
Just as the tree started to take shape, it faded away, leaving only a faint trace.
“Looks like I’ll have to look into the origins of this thing when I get the chance,” Chen Fei murmured, narrowing his eyes.
Back in his own residence, Yan Zheng suddenly shivered, an ominous feeling welling up in his heart.
He sneezed loudly and rubbed his sore nose.
“What the hell? Someone thinking about me or something…?”
