In the dim room, a man was bound to a cross. His clothes were already in a complete mess, and blood was seeping from the skin that had been cut open by a barbed whip, making him look even more pathetic.
The first joint of the little finger and the first joint of the ring finger of the man’s left hand were already gone. In their place were only two terrible wounds. The bleeding had stopped, but the white bone could still be vaguely seen.
With a “creak,” the door was opened from the outside, and a lieutenant colonel in an SS uniform walked in. Behind him followed several soldiers. These soldiers were tall and strong and looked extremely fierce.
The several men stood around the man who was tied to the cross. Another officer then walked in from the open door. This officer had no pupil in one of his eyes, only pure white, which looked very strange. And this officer had no hair. On his bald head, there was not even a single eyebrow.
“Hello,” the officer said, walking in and standing in front of the man on the cross, introducing himself in a hoarse voice. “I am Colonel Guldo, the director of the SS Intelligence Bureau. I heard you are a tough guy, so I came to see for myself. I like tough guys the most.”
“Gentlemen,” Colonel Guldo said, having introduced himself, and then very gently commanded his subordinates, “Don’t mind me. You can continue with the torture.”
The several soldiers who had received the instruction immediately took the whips from the wall and began to whip the man with all their might. The whips made a whooshing sound as they cut through the air, and as soon as they struck the man’s body, they would bring up a splash of blood.
“Ah!” The man began to scream tragically. His pitiful cries echoed and scattered in the narrow room, even with a somewhat deafening quality. As the whip struck, one blow after another, the tragic cries also became more and more heart-wrenching.
After a while, all sorts of torture and torment had no more effect on this man. The lieutenant colonel had no choice but to step forward and try to wake the poor man with cold water. He then personally approached the man’s little finger, which was missing its first joint, with a pair of pliers, and clamped the second joint of that little finger. “If I were you, I would hurry up and tell us what we want to know.”
“…” Silence. The reply he got was the man’s extreme silence. He just stared at the SS lieutenant colonel in front of him, his eyes filled with a hint of contempt and indifference, as if what was about to be destroyed was not a part of his body, but something that had long since left him.
“Indeed a tough guy!” Colonel Guldo said, watching for a while and clapping his hands in praise. “First, give his crotch a couple of hard ones. Then use those flies that I bought from South America, the kind that specialize in laying eggs in wounds, and try them on his old man.”
Soon, the room was filled with tragic screams and loud laughter. The man’s lower body, because of the flies laying eggs, was unbearably itchy. He screamed tragically, with a hysterical wail, but he still did not say a word of begging for mercy.
After another half an hour of torment, it was clear that Colonel Guldo had lost interest. He yawned, bored, and, staring at the unconscious man, he stood up and walked over. He patted the man’s shoulder, expressing his respect for a man who would rather die than submit. But after patting his shoulder, Guldo had no intention of leaving. Instead, as if he were talking to himself, he stared at the man being tortured and spoke again.
He said slowly, “Did you really think we only have these few little tricks? We’ve been beating you for three days. Naturally, it’s not as simple as just torturing you. From the moment you were captured, our agents have been investigating your background in Britain.”
The man, whose eyes had been closed, suddenly opened them. He stared at the speaking Colonel Guldo with a look of venomous hatred but still gritted his teeth and did not speak.
“You see! We can find a common topic quite happily, can’t we?” Colonel Guldo said, a gentle smile on his face. But because of his extremely strange and terrifying appearance, this smile carried more of a terrifying and dangerous aura. “If you’re not in a hurry, let’s start with your home at No. 4, 66 Victoria Embankment, London.”
“You!” the man spoke for the first time since he had been captured. The dead-grey indifference in his eyes was gone, replaced by a look of worry and fear. “How did you know?”
Colonel Guldo replied with a smile, “There are many other things I know. For example, not long ago, our bombers visited your hometown. The place where the bombs landed was only a kilometer away from your home, about… about the distance from here to our Army General Staff.”
Before the man who was tied up could speak again, Guldo continued, “Perhaps you don’t care much about a house. After all, those are just external things. Well then…”
He looked at the man, like a devil looking at its prey. “I would very much like to know if you have anything you want to say to your wife and your daughter.”
“You are a devil! You are a bastard!” The man, whose expression had not changed in the slightest even under the ax, finally began to curse loudly. Tears flowed from his eyes, and his expression seemed even more pained than when he had just been beaten. “I won’t let you go! I won’t let you go!”
“We used a few tricks to invite them, mother and daughter, from London back to Berlin. You see, compared to the British, we Germans are more hospitable,” Colonel Guldo said in a gentle and refined manner. “Alright, actually, we went through a lot of trouble. We impersonated your intelligence personnel and kidnapped them, stuffed them into sacks, and transported them to the beach, and then used a navy submarine to get them back to Wilhelmshaven.”
“If it weren’t for the fact that what you did was so distressing, we wouldn’t have wanted to go to so much trouble, and even used a precious submarine to carry out the mission,” Colonel Guldo continued to himself. “Your intelligence organization received five guests from London. Three of them intended to assassinate our Führer… So I would very much like to know, where did the other two go?”
“I must see my wife and child! And you must guarantee our safety!” The man finally lowered his head.
“Men, bring in his wife and daughter. A reunion after a long separation is very moving. We naturally will not object,” Guldo said with a chuckle. “Of course, if what he says is not of interest to us, then strip his daughter’s clothes off in front of him… If he still doesn’t talk, then you guys take off your clothes… Do you understand what I’m saying?”
“Yes, Colonel! We understand!” a few of the German soldiers replied with a malicious smile.
“I’ll tell you everything I know! On the day you mentioned, I did indeed receive several agents from Britain. There were four of them, three men and one woman, not five as you said! I swear to God, there were only four people! You already know who the three men were. That woman got off the train in Cologne! She was in the photos you had me identify a few days ago! I can recognize her!” The man, like a deflated balloon, spilled everything he knew in one go.
He knew that after this man had seen his wife and daughter, he had confessed everything, without holding anything back. Nodding, Colonel Guldo, having gotten the answers he wanted, left the interrogation room with his men, leaving the family of three inside to say a few words of reunion after a long separation.
“You see, I told you that people who do intelligence work can’t have a family, otherwise they will have a weakness,” Colonel Guldo said, turning back at the door and shrugging to the lieutenant colonel beside him. “In a little while, after he has identified the female spy, you take it and check it with the other British spies next door. If it is correct, then issue the order for the arrest. Then, in front of him, strangle his wife and daughter, and then kill him! I promised not to mistreat his family, and I must keep my word.”
“Yes, Colonel!” The lieutenant colonel saluted at attention.
“Learn something. Next time, don’t send just any riffraff to me! Understand?” Colonel Guldo said, looking at his subordinate with contempt.
“As you command, Colonel, sir… It’s just that there is still one thing that I haven’t figured out, and I would like to ask for your advice, Colonel Guldo,” the lieutenant colonel asked cautiously. “May I ask, Colonel, you had a way to make him talk from the very beginning, so why did you still…? “
“Why did I still torture him?” Colonel Guldo sneered, then looked at the subordinate he had carefully cultivated and replied, “Because I simply wanted to see how flies lay eggs and reproduce on living flesh.”
He explained without shame, “I am a scientist and love to study such problems! You can simply understand this behavior as my habit of studying how long the human will can hold on under various extreme conditions and various forms of destruction.”
“…” The lieutenant colonel really wanted to curse. He thought silently in his heart: How long can one hold on? Who can hold on in front of a terrifying interrogation monster like you? And even if one can, for how long?
A dozen or so minutes later, the lieutenant colonel knocked on Colonel Guldo’s office and placed a photo of a beautiful woman on his desk. “Colonel, sir, the British spy’s family has been dealt with. In addition, the target has been confirmed. It’s this woman!”
“A pity… such a beautiful girl… If we catch her alive, I would be very interested in trying to interrogate her myself,” Colonel Guldo said with a grin. “You will set out at once, take the action team to Cologne, and invite this beautiful Miss spy back for me. I am a very hospitable person.”
He stood up and glanced at the photo of Akado hanging behind him. “You should only blame yourselves for being enemies of the great Führer. If there is a next life, I hope you will remember this lesson and not be enemies of Germany again.”
