Volume 1 Chapter 30
by Need_More_SleepVolume 1 + Chapter 30: No Title
“Shaa… shaa~ Xiao Yu Li is just too cute, do you want me to carry you inside?”
She stopped her teasing motions, yet still pressed herself against my back, her arms loosely wrapped around my neck as she whispered by my ear. Her warm breath brushed against me, making my ear itch faintly.
“Honestly, Senior Feiran, we’re already late. If we don’t go in now, the department head is going to scold us.”
I gently pushed away the tall beauty in front of me.
Feiran was the vice president of our university student union’s Publicity Department, a second-year senior. She was bold and easygoing, with short, neat black hair and an enviable figure. Her sharp yet beautiful features attracted no small number of admirers.
Before my transformation, I had actually gotten along quite well with her. As for why…
It was because she thought I had a good temper and handled tasks efficiently, so she would often dump her own work onto me.
If you put it nicely, she was “helping me develop my abilities.” If you put it bluntly, she was treating me as a free laborer.
Every time, she’d toss the work to me and leave, not even giving me a chance to refuse.
She’d even say she’d reward me afterward, bah! I never saw a single thing.
“Alright, alright, let’s go in then.”
After stepping away from behind me, she grabbed my hand familiarly, pushed open the meeting room door, and led me inside.
The clean and orderly meeting room already had more than a dozen people seated. Some sat quietly, while others were looking down at their phones.
At the most prominent seats sat the department head and another vice president.
The department head was also a second-year senior, gentle and beautiful, with black-rimmed glasses that gave her an intellectual air. The other vice president was a second-year senior male, with a neat and pleasant appearance that made him easy to like. He played the guitar exceptionally well and was quite popular for his many talents.
The department head, who had been organizing documents, paused when she saw Feiran and me enter, then spoke to us.
“Feiran, late again? And you even dragged Yu Li into it with you. Honestly, Xiao Li, don’t let her lead you astray.”
“Yes, understood.” I nodded respectfully.
But Feiran paid no mind to the reprimand, in fact, she even smiled. “Hey, department head, isn’t it the rule that if you’re late for the weekly meeting, you have to perform a penalty? How about Xiao Li and I sing a song together? We can’t break the Publicity Department’s traditions, right?”
“Since you’re so eager, then alright, let’s treat it as a warm-up before the meeting begins,” the department head said, a hint of anticipation in her eyes.
I pressed my hand to my forehead helplessly. The department head hadn’t even planned to pursue the matter, and yet Feiran had volunteered us for punishment, and dragged me along with her. This couldn’t possibly end well.
Still, she said we’d just sing a song together… it shouldn’t be too embarrassing, right?
That naive thought would soon cost me dearly.
“Then Xiao Li and I will perform ‘Learn to Meow’ for everyone!”
Learn to Meow.
Meow.
Meow…
Wait, what are you doing, Senior Feiran!? Why pick such an embarrassing song!? Wouldn’t any normal pop song have been fine!?
I screamed internally, my eyes wide as I stared at her, demanding an explanation.
But she acted as if she hadn’t noticed at all, casually taking out her phone and searching for the instrumental track.
“Xiao Li, we’re starting, let’s do our best together,” she said, squeezing my hand and giving me a playful wink.
Hey, don’t think acting cute will get you out of this!
I wanted to protest, but with no way out, I had no choice but to go along and sing with her.
We pulled up the lyrics on our phones, and with a tap, the cheerful intro began to play.
She held my hand, swaying it lightly to the rhythm.
“Let’s learn to meow together, meow meow meow~ Acting cute in front of you, oh meow meow meow meow meow~”
Feiran’s voice was rich and slightly husky, singing such a cutesy song gave it an oddly amusing contrast, yet she didn’t care about anyone else’s gaze.
As for me, my face was flushed with embarrassment, so I sang very softly. Especially during the “meow meow meow” parts, I barely made a sound at all, just moving my lips, completely drowned out by her voice.
This was beyond embarrassing, it felt like public execution. Thank goodness this ridiculous senior’s voice covered mine, or I’d want to crawl into a crack in the ground and disappear.
As the atmosphere grew lively, Feiran pulled me closer, intertwining our fingers. She lowered her head, looking at me with a mischievous smile.
The moment I saw that sly expression, I had a bad feeling.
Sure enough, when she reached the line “let’s do it together,” she suddenly stopped singing, and with a glance, signaled for me to sing it alone.
I froze completely. The sudden silence made the atmosphere unbearably awkward.
Caught between advancing and retreating, I had no choice but to sing, utterly mortified, “T-together, meow meow meow…”
After that, Feiran resumed singing, “I want to wear your jacket~ smell your scent~”
And then, damn it, she stopped again. I was forced to pick it up once more.
“I want to become your cat, curl up and fall asleep in your arms, craving your warmth every day~”
This is so embarrassing… so embarrassing…
As I sang these mortifying lyrics, I could practically feel my dignity dissolving bit by bit.
What made it worse was that Feiran kept our fingers tightly interlocked, gazing down at me with a deep, meaningful look that left me flustered and uneasy.
And so, amidst embarrassment and tension, we finally finished the song together.
When it ended, I immediately felt the piercing gazes of everyone else in the room.
Waaah… it’s all that stupid Senior Feiran’s fault! I’ll never be able to face everyone in the department again. I just wanted to quietly slack off like a salted fish, how did things end up like this!?
“Finished? That was quite a performance,” the department head said, pushing up her glasses with lingering amusement, then casually slipped the phone that had recorded the entire performance back into her bag.
“D-department head… you didn’t record that, did you?” I asked anxiously, having noticed her movement.
“No, no, Xiao Li, don’t get worked up. I was just checking messages on my phone,” she said with a smiling wave.
“R-really? You’re not lying to me… you didn’t record it, right?”
The light faded from my eyes, because I noticed that it wasn’t just her. Everyone in the room was quietly putting away their phones, almost as if they were deliberately hiding it from me.
So… everyone recorded it, huh… hehe. My embarrassing performance is going to be known across the whole campus tomorrow.
What should I do…? Maybe I should just stay in the dorm from now on. I don’t want to be called a “catgirl”…
