    Volume 1 + Chapter 157: The Temple

    “The Temple?”

Along the journey, Anna remained somewhat puzzled, not fully grasping the true meaning behind Eve’s words.

Go to a temple? What temple? A Dragon God’s temple…

But just last night, there was no such place in the imperial capital. Yet this morning, this so-called temple was already built?

Even if the empire’s construction capabilities were extraordinarily powerful, building a magnificent, grand temple literally overnight was surely impossible.

Moreover, in terms of grandeur and scale, the churches of the religious order were all resplendent and solemn, their very appearance could evoke an ineffable sense of awe. Structures of such scale could never appear out of thin air in a single night.

However, the “temple” Eve spoke of was not some tangible, majestic building.

The place they finally arrived at was not any newly constructed temple, but the most renowned hospital in the imperial capital.

This hospital in the imperial capital was considered the most advanced in terms of medical facilities and the most abundant in medical resources within the entire empire and even among all neighboring nations. The skills of its physicians, as well as the various equipment and medications available, were top-notch for the era.

Consequently, the hospital was always bustling with a constant stream of people seeking medical treatment, an unceasing flow.

Day and night, the place was packed, gathering patients from all over the empire and even more distant lands, clinging to a sliver of hope.

Doctors busily moved between wards, patients’ family members conversed in low voices in the corridors, some waiting anxiously, others sighing in despair.

And even though this was the most medically advanced hospital in the entire empire and surrounding nations, the scope of diseases it could cure remained limited. There were still too many illnesses that couldn’t be treated, too many people waiting here for miracles that would likely never come.

Within this massive hospital, all manner of despair, sorrow, pain, and pleas filled the air. Countless patients waited here for treatment, and countless people met the end of their lives here.

For humans, the limits of medicine were essentially the limits of human magic. No matter how advanced the empire’s medical system was, there were still too many difficult and complicated diseases it couldn’t overcome.

For the Dragon Clan, however, the diseases that seemed incurable and insurmountable in human eyes were but trivial matters that could be easily resolved.

Just as Eve’s magic was sufficient to stir the stars and alter the heavens and earth, the magic wielded by the Dragon Clan could likewise effortlessly cure all ailments considered irrecoverable in the human world.

Although both Anna and Andai had once been defeated by Leah, as members of the Dragon Clan, they inherently possessed powerful magic. That mysterious power rooted deep in their bloodlines was still not to be underestimated.

Their magic was far beyond the comprehension of ordinary humans. Even a light touch or a casual glance could be enough to instantly restore a patient in utter despair, terminally ill, to full health, as if they had never been sick.

    “What are we here for?”

As the carriage slowly came to a stop, Anna stepped down, her gaze curiously surveying the surroundings.

This was the plaza in front of the hospital. At its center was a simply tended garden. Though not particularly elaborate, it still added a touch of vitality to this heavy ground.

Originally, this area was intended as a place for patients to stroll and relax. However, reality had bestowed upon it another layer of meaning, this garden often became the place where many on the brink of death bid their final farewells to loved ones.

The air here was always tinged with the sorrow of parting. Soft weeping and helpless prayers could be heard from time to time.

Of course, those lingering here weren’t only patients and family members. There were also missionaries clad in religious robes.

The Church was well aware that those in desperate straits were most susceptible to yearning for faith. Thus, they spared no effort in preaching here, telling patients nearing life’s end of divine mercy and salvation, offering them hope, and depicting a more beautiful world.

Yet in the end, all these gentle words were merely solace for the soul.

Faith might bring moments of peace, but ultimately it couldn’t truly change anything, nor could it retrieve anyone from the shadow of death.

If, among countless patients, even just one person miraculously recovered after converting to the Church, then the propaganda effect for the Church would be self-evident. Believers would widely circulate this as a divine miracle. And those struggling in despair would thus more firmly embrace faith, placing their hopes in divine protection.

But Eve’s purpose in bringing Anna and Andai here today was far beyond that.

What she sought was not to fabricate so-called “miracles” relying on chance survivors, but to truly bring salvation to those teetering on the edge of death, those filled with despair.

A deity capable of giving people genuine hope and actually bringing about change was one worthy of the world’s reverence and belief.

“Wear these robes. And take these slips of paper.”

Eve casually took out two robes and handed them to Anna and Andai. The robes appeared elegant and dignified. The fabric wasn’t luxurious, yet it exuded a solemn aura. Most eye-catching was the simple, fluid, yet highly symbolic emblem on the chest, a pattern resembling two massive dragon wings spread open, and between them, held aloft, a blazing sun.

Simply looking at it could evoke a sense of profound and magnificent imagery.

“What are we going to do?”

Though obediently changing into the robes and taking the slips of paper Eve handed them, Anna and Andai were still somewhat confused, not understanding what Eve actually wanted them to do.

A slight smile curved Eve’s lips. Her gaze drifted to a corner of the plaza where a group of robed missionaries were softly preaching doctrines to patients and their families, gently and patiently comforting those immersed in suffering.

“See those missionaries?” Eve’s tone was light, yet carried an undeniable weight. “Learn from their example. Bit by bit, from scratch, build the temple that belongs to you.”

She paused, smiled faintly, and slowly uttered the final words,

“The temple of the Dragon God Faith.”

Anna and Andai were stunned for a moment, then finally understood Eve’s true intent. Now, they also finally comprehended what Eve had said earlier, a deity who could genuinely bring change, who could offer salvation to the world, was one worthy of reverence.

“You want us… to heal those patients?”

    Andai spoke up softly.

“Not entirely. As lofty deities, you merely need to respond to their wishes. There’s no need to fulfill all their wildest fantasies. Just respond…”
