Chapter 192: One Step At A Time

“I’m heading out—probably back in two days.” Before leaving, Heli rambled on for what felt like forever. “Do your homework properly—I’ll check when I return. Keep practicing your abilities too. A police officer will come by—I’ve already told Raven. And stay away from spicy food, especially after your cramps…”

She even slipped Mi Xiaoliu two bills as pocket money.

    But something felt missing.

    Heli turned back. “Say bye-bye.”

    “Bye-bye.”

    “Mm, bye-bye.”

Only then did she leave, satisfied.

Once she was gone, Mi Xiaoliu silently stared at the money in her hand.

“Master, if Heli finds out you spent it all immediately, she’ll spank you.” Sasha hurriedly warned.

Mi Xiaoliu tucked the bills away.

It had been a long time since she last extracted memories.

Sasha had mentioned she once had parents—but they died when she was seven.

Forgetting the dead so casually… wasn’t right.

Mi Xiaoliu quietly returned to her room to work on her homework. Raven noticed and promptly dragged Toby away from his game, forcing him to deliver a fruit platter.

    Toby entered Mi Xiaoliu’s room.

    Then, Toby exited.

    Total time: Under ten seconds.

    “That fast?” Raven frowned.

    Couldn’t even manage small talk?

She pulled her son aside, whispering for him to stop gaming so much—school was starting soon, he should finish his homework, maybe even study with Mi Xiaoliu…

But Toby puffed out his chest, proudly declaring he’d finished his summer homework yesterday. “Pretty badass, huh?”

Yiwen, who had just gotten home, rolled her eyes. She could see right through her mom’s schemes—she needed to stop Raven from orchestrating her own cuckolding via little brother.

But she still hadn’t mustered the courage to come out to her mom.

Those two guys from the hospital were the same—parents would never approve.

For now… one step at a time.

Ignoring the domestic drama, Yiwen marched straight into Mi Xiaoliu’s room.

    A quick scan.

    Good. No school nurse.

She wrapped her arms around Mi Xiaoliu from behind. “Xiao-Liu~ I’m home. Where’s my kiss?”

“White.” Mi Xiaoliu answered the unspoken question.

“I don’t believe you.” Yiwen had to see for herself.

    Huh. She’s an honest kid.

But tomorrow, Yiwen would still doubt her. Payback for all the times this brat messed with me.

Sasha: “(A stream of venomous curses)!”

“Why’d you switch back to this look?” Yiwen plucked off Mi Xiaoliu’s glasses and tried them on. “Whoa—these are strong!”

    Everything’s spinning.

She yanked them off. “I thought your nearsightedness was fake?”

Back in the forest, Mi Xiaoliu didn’t need glasses at all. Yiwen had noticed every detail while analyzing the Black-Clothed One’s weaknesses.

Mi Xiaoliu shook her head—then removed her colored contacts.

A simple change in eye color—and just like that, the plain, forgettable look vanished. Sometimes, the smallest details made all the difference.

Mi Xiaoliu’s natural appearance was adorable, and Yiwen loved it. But at the same time, the longer she stared, the angrier she felt—old grudges bubbling up in her petty little heart.

She held the colored contacts up to her own eyes. Blurry. Did wearing these all the time damage Mi Xiaoliu’s vision?

    Vision…

Then it hit her—the Black-Clothed One had been colorblind.

Ah. Now some things made sense.

Mi Xiaoliu was a Defective, infected with Black Element. Without intervention, she wouldn’t live long.

If I can master my new ability… could I slow the Black Element’s spread? Buy her more time?

Yiwen hugged Mi Xiaoliu from behind, her mood sinking.

I have to get stronger. How else can I protect her?

“Xiaoliu… why are you still pretending to be a boy?”

    No answer.

“You damn little brat!” Yiwen pinched her.

“Mm.” A soft noise of protest.

Yiwen had aimed for the exact spot Mi Xiaoliu had grabbed her before—payback.

Did she think dating meant Yiwen would forgive and forget? Every slight, every prank—she’d return them all!

“Then how do you control your hair length?”

This, at least, Mi Xiaoliu could answer.

She pulled out the Magic Comb—an ornate wooden hairpiece—and stood to brush Yiwen’s hair.

In moments, Yiwen’s hairstyle matched Jingyin’s from the MV. She gaped at the mirror.

“How?! What kind of sorcery is this?”

Mi Xiaoliu stayed silent, backing away preemptively.

Yiwen turned her head left and right. She’d thought it would take years to grow her hair back out.

    But…

“Can this comb also make it shorter? Like before?”

    “…”

Mi Xiaoliu cautiously stepped closer, brushing twice more.

    Short hair again.

    “This is better.”

    For now, this’ll do.

But so many secrets—and she still wouldn’t tell her “boyfriend”? Infuriating.

    Yiwen glared.

Mi Xiaoliu retreated another two steps.

Yiwen knew pushing further might cost her affection points.

She shook her head. “Let’s go on a date.”

Her “Summer Mi Xiaoliu Makeover Plan” was scrapped. The truth was more complicated than she’d imagined.

But that didn’t cancel date night.

Mi Xiaoliu shook her head, gesturing to her homework.

    “We’re going. My treat.”

Yiwen didn’t care. She scooped Mi Xiaoliu up bridal-style and marched out—only setting her down once they were past the door. No need to scandalize Mom and Toby.

Passing the kitchen, Mi Xiaoliu took a wide detour, confusing Yiwen.

Heli said to stay away from chili peppers. The kitchen has chili peppers.

    —

    Meanwhile, Elsewhere…

Old Man: “Excuse me, does this road have buses?”

Local: “Nah. Look at this dirt path—what bus company’d bother?” He eyed the stranger—white mid-length hair, neatly kept, like some cushy office worker. His blinking seemed off, though. Eye problems?

The man checked his black phone.

Location: Malegobi Grassland—home of alpacas, close to Sunshine City, but far from Fanzui City.

So… 50% chance of buses. If not, 50% chance of other vehicles. And if…

Voice Behind Him: “Fancy meeting you here.”

    Rutherford smirked.

    His luck never failed.

    “Mind a ride, Boss?”

Not the Night Owl boss—just an employer.

Asking for a lift after failing the mission? It’s really bold.
