Chapter 145: Fatherly Tales For A Daughter

“Assign someone to watch him. See what he’s up to.” Officer Chen felt his last line in the previous discussion wasn’t impactful enough, so he repeated it.

    “Uncle Chen!”

Yiwen’s voice rang from outside. Officer Chen cut off his comms, rerouted Lu Mingxue’s channel to a liaison, then opened the door to let her in.

After a brief mental draft, he began: “Your father was an extraordinarily powerful ability user—once among the strongest in the Federation. A Level 5.”

Even braced for it, Yiwen’s jaw still slackened.

To her and Toby, their father had just been an ordinary middle-aged man who loved binging moe and light Yuri anime at his computer, occasionally taking them for terrifying flights that left them wailing while he laughed like an idiot.

Now, she felt like a struggling delivery driver suddenly learning her dad was the CEO of the company.

So that Electronic Ghost—whatever its name was—wasn’t just blowing smoke when it said I had potential. Her ability was inherited from her father, though it seemed she hadn’t gotten his talent.

And what could force manipulation at Level 5 even achieve? She couldn’t begin to imagine.

It also confirmed Officer Chen had been deliberately hiding things about her father.

Steadying herself, Yiwen looked up, waiting for the rest.

Instead, Officer Chen sat down, calmly unscrewed his thermos, and took a sip of scalding hot water in summer.

    “And then?” Yiwen pressed.

    “That’s it.”

    “THAT’S IT??” Her voice cracked.

You called me here in person for one sentence?! Do you know how much that taxi driver scammed me?! He circled the same block three times!

And most importantly—Mi Xiaoliu’s alone with that random woman! How much did Lu Mingxue pay you?!

Yiwen slammed the table. “Old Chen, did I owe you a pound of cartilage in a past life?!”

“Uncle Chen” when she needs something, “Old Chen” when she’s pissed.

Officer Chen lowered his head, wondering if he’d gone too far, then tossed her another scrap:

“After your father disappeared, we investigated your home. Found a hidden basement door in his study. Might be worth checking for clues.”

“You wouldn’t tell me if there were?”

    I have to dig myself?

Officer Chen shook his head, blowing on his thermos. “You do remember you lived in Sunshine City, right?”

Sunshine City cases aren’t my jurisdiction.

“Level 5 intel is above my clearance. Your dad and I were just police academy roommates.”

He pondered, then added: “If you want school stories, I’ve got those. Like how he bought thirty pairs of socks to avoid laundry—wore one a day, washed them monthly. Or that time during a no-abilities marathon, he poured honey water into his bunkmate’s shoes. Guy got so mad he stripped your dad of his underwear in the middle of the street. That’s how your parents met—”

“Thanks, I’ll pass.” Yiwen stormed out.

    ————————

Lu Mingxue is a good person.

Mi Xiaoliu happily licked the “Ice Genius” popsicle Lu Mingxue had bought her.

Reading this thought, Lu Mingxue felt an inexplicable pang of guilt.

She had brought Mi Xiaoliu back to her place, but in the end, she couldn’t bring herself to check that private area. Instead, she simply reported, “I accidentally touched something when I brushed against her.”

This way, even if Mi Xiaoliu were ever caught, she could argue, “I did feel something back then, but maybe it wasn’t that something.”

Besides, now that she knew why she was supposed to look, what was she checking for? Whether Mi Xiaoliu had started growing hair down there?

And for some reason, she had this strange premonition that if she actually went through with it, a certain white-haired girl would burst in and beat her to death.

Lu Mingxue stealthily crept up behind Mi Xiaoliu, hands sliding under her arms. Thanks to the thin summer T-shirt, her fingers brushed directly against the smooth skin of Mi Xiaoliu’s underarms—still completely hairless.

At her age, I already had a little fuzz growing in.

Damn it, she’ll get there eventually!

Lu Mingxue lifted her like this, plopping her onto the digital scale.

Mi Xiaoliu stayed perfectly still, utterly cooperative.

    Still no weight gain.

    You monster!

I must not be feeding her enough. Give it half a year, and she’ll plump up for sure.

    ———

Yiwen didn’t show up for afternoon classes. By the time she’d rushed to the police station and back, it would’ve been too late anyway, so she just skipped.

Damn it! That witch Lu Mingxue got Mi Xiaoliu all to herself!

Come evening, Mi Xiaoliu received a text from Yiwen.

    Yiwen: Xiaoliu, any summer plans?

    6 (Liu): …

Yiwen: Wanna go on a trip to Sunshine City with me?

The sound of abacus beads clanking intensifies.

    6 (Liu): …

Yiwen: I’ll treat you to good food.

    6 (Liu): Okay.

Then, in her mind, she asked Sasha what “going on a trip” meant.

Heli’s lessons had been all over the place—her STEM skills had improved rapidly, but there were still many words in humanities subjects she didn’t fully grasp. She knew “trip” meant going out to have fun, but not the specifics.

“Master, ‘trip’ means going very far away to play. It’ll take a few days, and during that time, you won’t see Heli at all.” Sasha deliberately emphasized the last part.

Hearing this, Mi Xiaoliu used her newly learned skill—long-pressing the message—to recall her last reply.

    6 (Liu): Not okay.

    Yiwen: “??”

Yiwen, who had been lying on her bed kicking her legs, immediately froze. She typed: Then I’ll still treat you to good food, okay?

    6 (Liu): Okay.

Yiwen long-pressed her own message and Mi Xiaoliu’s earlier “Not okay,” deleted them, then sent a screenshot to Mi Xiaoliu.

Yiwen: Break your promise, and you’ll swallow a thousand needles.

    6 (Liu): …

Following Sasha’s instructions, Mi Xiaoliu tried to mimic Yiwen’s method—deleting the messages and attempting to send another “Not okay” before screenshotting.

Yiwen: [Auto-reply] I’m busy right now. Talk later.

    Sasha: Furious.

This little white-haired gremlin is too baby!

Mi Xiaoliu’s brow twitched slightly as she stored her phone in her system space.

Normally, she wouldn’t stash the Durian 14 like this—unless she was wearing her newbie combat suit.

    And right now, she was.

As if she hadn’t learned her lesson from the spanking, she dashed through the increasingly turbulent city, leaping between skyscrapers dozens of stories high—barely noticeable unless someone was actively looking.

Her destination? The last place she wanted to go: Gloria’s house.

    Because the server was there.

Though she’d been dragged there last time in a suitcase, Heli had picked her up on a scooter, so she still remembered the way.

    ———

A small automatic night light hung at the entrance of the Lasvedo residence. Many homes had these now, but the Lasvedos clearly installed it with other purposes in mind.

For example—the moment Mi Xiaoliu stepped into its glow, pressing against the wall to hide, the shadow at her feet twisted into a monstrous claw and seized her. At the same time, the golden retriever in the yard started barking wildly, straining against its leash.

“Intruder detected. Identity: Black-Clothed One. All units, prepare for engagement.” Shen Qing murmured into her walkie-talkie.

Then, the shadow restraining Mi Xiaoliu vanished.

    Shen Qing: “??”

How can a spatial ability user erase shadows?

Well, she’d only stored the solidified shadow. A normal one still stretched at her feet.

Though shocked, Shen Qing quickly adjusted. “Backyard—”

Before she could finish, the walkie-talkie was snatched from her hand.

Not by the Black-Clothed One—but by the head of the household.

“Capture alive. I have questions for her.” Okulet spoke into the device before tossing it back and charging toward Mi Xiaoliu, who was already retreating across the lawn.

Without hesitation, he activated his ability—not on her body, but her clothes.

This wasn’t a reenactment of that infamous marathon incident from the police academy.

He was trying to force her to use her blue flames by demonstrating his lethality.

    A risky gamble.

    But it worked.

Her trench black coat remained intact.
