Volume 5 Chapter 56
by Need_More_SleepVolume 5 + Chapter 56: The Atrocities of The White Night Sect
Xiao Hong was a young foxfolk girl from a small village in Fox Hills. As usual, when she returned home from school, she found her grandfather, the only family she had, looking extremely tense.
“Xiao Hong, quick, come over here!”
Her grandfather pulled his granddaughter into the house and hurriedly shut the door.
“Grandpa, what’s wrong?” Xiao Hong asked curiously.
She noticed something strange about the house today. Not only were the windows tightly sealed, but the curtains had been drawn everywhere.
“Xiao Hong, this is bad. The White Night Sect’s people will arrive in the village any moment,” her grandfather said gravely.
“What is the White Night Sect?” Xiao Hong blinked.
“They’re a pack of scoundrels. Under the pretext of purging believers of the false god, they eliminate dissidents and commit every evil imaginable. The country is already in chaos, White Night Sect members are everywhere…”
Before he could finish speaking, miserable screams erupted from outside.
“Ahhh!! No, please spare me!! I’m not a believer of the false god!!”
Hearing the cries, Xiao Hong’s grandfather’s face changed drastically. He lifted the lid of a large rice jar.
“Xiao Hong, hide inside, quick!!”
“Okay!”
Though she did not fully understand, Xiao Hong was a good child. She obediently climbed into the rice jar as her grandfather instructed.
“Xiao Hong, promise me, no matter what happens next, do not make a sound. Do you understand?”
“Okay.”
“Remember, don’t make even the slightest noise.”
After giving his warning, her grandfather placed the lid back onto the rice jar.
Bang!!
A loud crash sounded from outside, the door was kicked open by force. Foxfolk clad in White Night Sect robes stormed into the house.
“Why are you breaking into my home?! Get out!” Xiao Hong’s grandfather shouted.
The White Night Sect member at the front spoke coldly, “Villager, we are members of the White Night Sect. We have received reports that your village is harboring believers of the false god, people who slander Lord Azure Fox God and even attempt to conduct prayer rituals for the false god…”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about!”
“Still pretending to be ignorant? Search the place! Find the evidence!” the leader barked.
The other sect members began rummaging through the house, smashing objects in their hunt for so-called clues.
One of them shattered a ceramic jar and discovered it filled with money.
The man grinned and stuffed the coins into his robe.
“Stop! Stop!!” Xiao Hong’s grandfather panicked and tried to stop him. “That’s my granddaughter’s tuition money! You can’t take it! We are all foxfolk, why are you persecuting your own people?!”
“Silence! This money could very well be used to aid believers of the false god. The White Night Sect has the right to confiscate it, this authority was granted to us by the Nine-Tailed Fox Emperor!”
The sect member shoved the old man aside.
Already advanced in age and weaker than the young men, Xiao Hong’s grandfather struck his head against a pillar. Blood streamed down his face.
“…”
Hiding inside the rice jar, Xiao Hong peered through a crack and saw everything. She was so frightened she nearly burst into tears.
“Found it! This is a statue of the false god! He’s a believer of the false god!” One of the sect members raised a small clay Fox God figurine.
Such fox god statues could be found in almost every household.
“Hmph. This old thing is just like the other villagers, a believer of the false god. An enemy of our fox race! Take him away. Arrest him along with the other false god believers in the village square and deal with them together!” the leader ordered.
The sect members lifted the blood-covered grandfather and prepared to drag him away.
“Grandpa…”
Seeing this, Xiao Hong could no longer hold back. She let out a small, tearful cry.
The sect members outside heard it.
“Did you hear something just now?”
“When this old man rushed at us, didn’t he mention something about his granddaughter’s tuition?”
“Right… but he was alone here. Where’s his granddaughter?”
The sect members exchanged glances and then walked toward the rice jar.
Seeing these vicious figures approach, Xiao Hong froze in terror. Her body trembled, her mind blank.
Overcome by fear, she lifted the lid, jumped out, and bolted through the back door.
“As expected, someone was hiding here! Must be the old man’s granddaughter!”
“Don’t run!”
The White Night Sect members charged after her.
Xiao Hong’s grandfather, somehow finding a last surge of strength, suddenly rose. He bit one sect member’s face and used his body to block their path.
“You damned old man!!”
Enraged, a sect member kicked him viciously.
With a scream, bones in the old man’s body cracked. He collapsed, unconscious.
But the time he bought allowed Xiao Hong to escape, fleeing toward the mountain behind the village.
“Chase her! By order of Lord Bishop, to purify our fox race, not a single believer of the false god may be spared!” the leader said coldly. “Capture them all and punish them!”
…
…
“I see now! I understand, Your Highness! I’ve figured out how this train works!”
With grease smeared across her face, Elly crawled out from the locomotive’s machinery and spoke cheerfully to Xia Yi.
“Really?” Xia Yi, seated atop the engine, looked down at the little green dragon maid below.
“Don’t worry, Your Highness. Leave the train to me, I’ve completely figured it out!”
“Alright, then I’ll leave it in your hands,” Xia Yi replied.
At this moment, the Flying Swallow train was stopped within the mountains.
Although the little princess had decided to head for the capital of Fox Hills to assist the fox royal family, and the train still had sufficient fuel, there was one unavoidable issue.
Food.
Dragons had enormous appetites, and the provisions aboard the train were pitifully scarce, mostly tea snacks, nowhere near enough to sustain them.
After some consideration, Xia Yi chose a relatively deserted location and halted the train, intending to resupply and carefully plan their next move.
Thus, the dragon delegation rested there.
Elly had volunteered to study the train, aspiring to serve as its conductor.
Her reason was simple. She wanted to contribute to Xia Yi. Otherwise, she would seem good for nothing but being a mount.
To repay the life-saving grace of the princess, Elly would work hard!
Rustle, rustle.
There was movement in the forest, something was approaching.
“Your Highness, I hear something over there,” Elly said eagerly. “Did some food just deliver itself to us?”
Xia Yi looked toward the source of the sound. After a moment, what came into view was a panicked little fox girl.
“Y-you are…?!”
Xiao Hong, fleeing to the back mountain to escape pursuit by the White Night Sect, ran through the woods and suddenly saw the train, and Xia Yi and Elly before it. Her eyes widened in shock.
These were… the evil dragons!
