Volume 3 + Chapter 256: The Little Fox Trying To Explain

“I have come to take your life.”

Yue Liu said this to Xia Yi.

The night wind blew, lifting the Nine-Tailed Fox princess’s pink long hair, brushing across the grass with a rustling sound.

The atmosphere gradually became filled with murderous intent…

“Little fox radish, what did you say?” Xia Yi laughed.

As soon as she said this, the atmosphere was immediately ruined.

“Y-you, take me seriously!!” Yue Liu shouted, “I came here to kill you, not to fool around! Adjust your attitude! Don’t call me fox radish!!”

    “Little fox?”

    “Little fox won’t do either!!”

    “Chuunibyou fox?”

    “I am not Chuunibyou!”

    “Meowing fox?”

“I don’t meow anymore, I already kicked that bad habit—no, wait!!”

Yue Liu shook her head. How did she once again fall into this wicked dragon’s rhythm?

“You be serious, this is a battle concerning life and death! I am the princess of the Nine-Tailed Fox clan, the one who will take your life!”

“Alright, I understand, stinky pink fur.”

    “……”

Yue Liu was about to explode.

How did she just realize—this hateful rival had given her a whole bunch of weird nicknames?

She had to teach this guy a lesson!

    Swish!

Invisible sword energy spread out. The big tree behind Xia Yi toppled, and the grass on the ground was sliced off.

“Hmph, you realize your mistake now, don’t you? I’m not joking with you.” Yue Liu said coldly.

“Just now I think I heard you say something… about the Fox clan and the humans…”

    “That’s right—we’ve allied with them!”

    Yue Liu loudly declared:

“This is a secret your dragon clan doesn’t know! Our Fox clan is already seeking allies on this land, no matter if they are higher races or not—we will draw them in! We must form a powerful alliance, and the humans are one of them!”

    “There’s actually such a thing?”

“Hmph, arrogant dragons, always thinking so highly of themselves, looking down on outsiders. When the wave that changes the order of the land arrives, your dragon clan will be swallowed in it, wiped out completely! Our Fox clan will surely stand atop the storm! We will control the future of this land, and become the masters of destiny!”

    Yue Liu proudly proclaimed.

At first Xia Yi could understand, but later on, she couldn’t really follow what the little fox was saying.

Those Chuunibyou declarations were always a bit hard to make sense of.

    “So, you came here to…”

“You are now the enemy of humanity!”

Yue Liu drew out Sakura Moon. Under the moonlight, its cold light gleamed.

    She stared at Xia Yi.

This rival had truly done something outrageous—slaughtering tens of thousands of human knights in one stroke.

Yet, she seemed to feel no psychological burden, apparently not even aware of it. Strange.

But then again, Yue Liu didn’t really care about those humans’ lives either.

However, since the Fox clan had allied with humans, after the Black Swan incident, the humans had sought her out, hoping she would take action to deal with humanity’s greatest threat.

After all, even the Knight King was defeated—how could the humans not panic?

If she killed Xia Yi here and brought back her head, the humans would certainly be grateful. That would both strengthen the human–fox alliance and earn them generous rewards.

Though humans were not a higher race, with limited power ceilings, in alchemy their technology surpassed many races. One of alchemy’s branches had even produced something called “technology,” which combined with magic to become magitech.

If the Fox clan could obtain this knowledge, they could greatly increase their strength.

“Fox radish, do you really want to fight me?” Xia Yi asked.

“Sorry, but the me standing before you now is nothing like what you know! I am brand new!! Whether swordsmanship or illusions, I’ve already made a qualitative leap!”

Yue Liu raised Sakura Moon, striking a very cool pose.

Undistracted, her blade-drawing was as natural as the divine.

She would not waver because of the thoughts of Xia Yi, nor let her sword slow down.

In her battle with the Fox clan’s great swordmaster—Bai Yang—she had already proven herself, and even comprehended the essence of iaijutsu.

That sword technique was prepared specifically to deal with dragons.

    And also…

The little fox immediately changed stance, covering her face, revealing only her left eye through her fingers.

    “Eye of the Fox God!”

In her pink pupils appeared the shape of cherry blossoms.

“Heh heh heh, as long as I will it, I can use the Eye of the Fox God to cast you into eternal samsara!! In the world of illusion, you will sink forever, never able to return to reality!!”

“Sounds… kind of impressive?” Xia Yi blinked.

“The me now, not only has my realm already broken through, but I’ve also inherited the Fox clan’s legacy—I’m far ahead of you!” the little fox declared. “Do you understand? In my eyes now, you are already a marked prey!”

“Looks like, I’ll have to fight you again.”

Xia Yi summoned the Rose Staff into her hand.

On the other side, Yue Liu gripped Sakura Moon.

The two faced each other under the moonlight, neither speaking.

The little fox kept staring at Xia Yi for a long time, then muttered, “Rival, were you bullied by humans?”

“Bullied? You mean those guys… I guess so.”

Xia Yi gave a bitter smile, recalling her experiences, feeling somewhat dejected.

    “….”

    “What’s wrong? Not starting yet?”

“Forget it… today’s weather doesn’t really feel suited for fighting! We’ll fight next time!”

The little fox sheathed Sakura Moon, showing no intent to fight.

“Eh? But isn’t the weather fine?”

Xia Yi looked up at the sky—it didn’t seem like rain was coming.

Besides, was the weather really an excuse for not wanting to fight?

She didn’t really understand why the other party suddenly didn’t want to fight.

“You, running around the human world like this, there’s no way you’ll leave safely… forget it!”

Yue Liu’s gaze wavered, hesitant, as if she made up her mind, then stepped toward Xia Yi.

    “Close your eyes.”

    “Close my eyes for what…”

    “Hurry up!!”

    “Oh.”

    Xia Yi closed her eyes.

After a while, she felt something covering her body.

“It’s done, open them,” Yue Liu said. “Go to the river and see.”

Xia Yi opened her eyes, feeling nothing had changed.

So she walked to the riverbank, used a bit of magic to cast a light spell, and through the water saw a wondrous sight.

Reflected in the water was not a silver-haired dragon girl, but a pink-haired fox girl.

    It was Yue Liu!

Xia Yi raised her hand, and Yue Liu in the water made the same gesture.

“Now, I’ve cast an illusion on you. In others’ eyes, you look just like me. As long as you don’t mess around, no one will recognize you,” Yue Liu explained. “Were you planning to head to the nearby port, take a ship to leave? Don’t go yet. That port has been sealed off. If you move in the human world now, you’ll easily be discovered, and it will cause panic and trouble…”

“Yue Liu, are you helping me?” Xia Yi was very surprised.

“Ha? I-I didn’t really want to help you, that’s why I came! Hmph!”

Yue Liu’s cheeks flushed red. She crossed her arms in front of her chest, turned her gaze aside, and defended herself.

“Don’t forget, I still owe you some money… This is just repayment for that debt, got it? I am the princess of the Nine-Tailed Fox clan—I absolutely refuse to owe anyone anything, especially an annoying silver dragon like you! Foxes and dragons are enemies!”

    [Author’s Note:]

Since many readers may not have a clear concept of this book’s historical timeline, and I haven’t officially explained it before, this time I’ll share some clarification.

The following is information currently open to the public—only the history mentioned in the story so far:

    —–—–—–—–

God created the Infinite Land, the Old World was born.

Human civilization in the Old World reached its peak, their faith in God diminished.

God sent down a world-ending flood to punish mankind.

Humans regained faith, God forgave them, and sent emissaries to guide them onto the Ark of Salvation, allowing them to live in one corner of the Infinite Land. The seas were born.

Human civilization flourished again, repeating the old mistakes, building the Tower of Babel to challenge God.

God created the Seven Legendary Beasts, bringing disasters upon the world.

God died, the Old World ended, and the New World was born.

XX Era (Not yet shown in the plot).

    Mythic Era

[The last higher-race king with divine authority—the Dragon King—died, all divine inheritances were severed, the Mythic Era ended.]

The Dragon War, Dawnstar Calendar began.

    Primordial Era.

    Modern Era.

    —–—–—–—–

You might not have noticed—back in Xia Yi’s second volume, when she flipped through dragon history, a date appeared: Dawnstar Calendar 35,763.

The first year of the Dawnstar Calendar was the Dragon War. Everything before it belonged to the Mythic Era. The Dragon War is the dividing line between the Mythic Era and the Primordial Era.

Most history in this world is recorded starting from Dawnstar Calendar Year 1. The Mythic Era is too distant, with no clear records, only indistinct legends.

In the Little World Tree, when Xia Yi saw the history of the Human King, that was the early Mythic Era, over a hundred thousand years ago.

King Solomon appeared in the later Mythic Era, when humans were no longer a higher race.

    Among humanity’s legendary holy relics:

Holy Sword Gram, Holy Spear Gungnir, and the Ring of Clarity were not created by humans of the Mythic Era—they were excavated artifacts.

The Holy Sword Balmung was forged based on Holy Sword Gram.

The Armor of the Human King was made by humans themselves in the Mythic Era.

Holy Spear Gae Bolg was forged after the Human King’s defeat, which is why many of the heroic wills within it harbor hatred toward dragons.

Additionally, soul erasure is a misuse of the Ring of Clarity—similar to how Xia Yi likes to use the Rose Staff as if it were a physical Holy Sword.
