Volume 3 Chapter 226
by Need_More_SleepVolume 3 + Chapter 226: The Secret of Rhine Alchemy
Xia Yi, wearing the white lab coat of Rhine Alchemy, was quite satisfied with this outfit. It really did look proper and professional.
It seemed only a pair of glasses was missing—otherwise, she would look exactly like a well-learned scholar.
“Doctor, everything has already been processed. Can I go back for today, and then come again tomorrow for work—”
Before Xia Yi could even finish speaking, the door was pushed open.
Thud!
A Rhine Alchemy member rushed frantically in front of the Doctor.
“Doctor, this is bad!”
“Hm?”
“Doctor, a big… a big… a big problem…”
“Don’t panic, drink some water first.”
The Doctor calmly poured a glass of water for the Rhine Alchemy member.
The member took it and drank it all in one go. Because of the rush, he even choked on it.
“Cough, cough, cough!”
“I told you, don’t panic,” the Doctor said. “Speak slowly and clearly. What happened that made you lose composure like this?”
“Doctor, something has happened, it’s…”
The member glanced at Xia Yi at the side, clearly hesitant.
“It’s fine, just say it directly. She’s my assistant now,” the Doctor replied.
“But the Doctor’s assistant isn’t—”
“That person has already been fired. I’ve replaced them with a new one.”
“Ah?”
The member was very surprised, wanting to say more, but then recalled that the Doctor had done plenty of strange things before. Compared to those, this wasn’t unusual, so he began to explain.
“Doctor, the situation with the experiment has gotten somewhat out of control. One of the new test subjects has already entered into a berserk state, completely lost control. We need your command now.”
“Eh, weren’t they just delivered this morning? They’ve already lost control… sigh, does this mean I have to work overtime again?”
The Doctor frowned.
Standing to the side, Xia Yi listened to their conversation and was very attentive.
Especially with those words: “experiment” and “berserk.”
As expected, Rhine Alchemy really was conducting secret experiments unknown to the outside world—and the Doctor was even the one in charge.
Her luck was too good! She thought she’d have to cling onto a thigh for a while before extracting any inside information, and then seek another target to approach. But here she had directly landed the responsible person!
“Doctor, you must go immediately! This kind of situation is happening for the first time!” The Rhine Alchemy member urged anxiously.
“I understand.”
The Doctor nodded, then looked at Xia Yi.
“Xia Yi, wait here for a while. I need to take care of something—”
But suddenly, the Doctor seemed to think of something, smiled, and actually changed her words.
“Xia Yi, you’re coming with me.”
“I can start my internship now?!”
Xia Yi was overjoyed.
To be taken directly to the experimental site, and immediately confirm what kind of secret projects the human world was researching—this was just too great!
“Doctor, wouldn’t that be a bit…” The Rhine Alchemy member wanted to dissuade.
“She is my assistant. Assisting me with experiments is her work. Understood?”
The Doctor glared at him.
Since he had no authority to object, the member could only nod resentfully, showing agreement.
“Let’s go, Xia Yi.”
“Okay~ let’s start working~”
Xia Yi raised her hand energetically in response.
After that, she followed the Doctor deeper into Rhine Alchemy.
First, they passed through several layers of security lines. Each checkpoint was guarded by armed personnel on twenty-four-hour shifts. The security wouldn’t even let a fly through. Any suspicious person who dared approach didn’t even need to be warned—they could be executed on the spot.
After that, they arrived at a spatial teleportation magic circle.
Stepping onto it, once activated, they were transported through space.
After a rush of spatial disorientation, Xia Yi had no idea where she had arrived.
However, before stepping onto the teleportation circle, she had secretly dropped a magic orb. Now when she sensed it…
It was above!
Xia Yi realized—the teleportation circle of Rhine Alchemy actually led downward. They were already deep underground.
Clearly, this experiment was absolutely top-secret.
“What exactly is this experiment…” Xia Yi muttered.
“You’ll know soon enough,” the Doctor said with a smile. “By then, don’t cry and say you don’t want to do it anymore.”
“I won’t cry! Don’t underestimate me.”
Xia Yi pouted.
The Doctor and Xia Yi continued forward in the underground depths. This subterranean space had already been heavily remodeled to serve as a secret experimental base.
It was vast to an exaggerated degree, far larger than the Alchemist’s Guild above. No matter what experiment was being done here, there was more than enough space.
“ROAR!!!”
From the front came a feral bellow.
Xia Yi shuddered at the sound. It sounded far too much like a dragon!
“Doctor, hurry!”
The Rhine Alchemy member urged.
The Doctor quickened her pace, and Xia Yi hurriedly followed. Then she saw a shocking scene.
Even though she had mentally prepared herself, she was still surprised.
Her premonition had been correct—it was a dragon.
No, a massive monster, with a dragon tail behind it, two pairs of dragon wings growing from its back, its body covered in scales, and dragon-like slit pupils. At that moment, it was covered in blood.
But it wasn’t a real dragon. It looked more like a human infected with the dragon curse, eroded and transformed into a half-dragon monster.
This half-dragon monster had already lost all humanity, knowing only destruction. Around it lay bodies, once humanlike, but with traces of draconic transformation on them as well. They had all been killed by the berserk half-dragon monster.
“Quick, stop it!!”
Rhine Alchemy’s armed guards, fully equipped, charged forward with weapons, attempting to subdue it.
“ROAR!!!”
The half-dragon roared, slamming a claw to the ground, sending the guards flying. With a sweep of its arm, it smashed them all away, then this towering beast lunged straight toward Xia Yi.
BOOM!
The half-dragon crashed against an invisible magic barrier, which shuddered and cracked.
“Report immediately and clearly.” The Doctor spoke with calm precision.
“Doctor, the experimental subject has undergone deep Dragonization. The curse cannot be reversed. We attempted every possible method to restore him, but it was useless,” an alchemist reported.
“Not even the stabilizing potion?”
“No. The rest of this batch of subjects are the same. It seems they cannot be saved.”
“Fine. Don’t leave any alive. Erase them all, destroy everything.” The Doctor ordered.
“Yes, Doctor.” The alchemist obeyed without question and immediately set to work.
The guards scrambled out, while the alchemists injected deadly poison into the testing chamber.
Some of the not-yet-dead subjects inhaled the toxic fumes and screamed in agony, begging for mercy with their last strength. But those outside ignored them completely. The half-dragon monster too, under the effect of the poison, was slowly corroded away, its life force draining, until it collapsed.
“……”
Xia Yi fell silent.
Humans were secretly creating hybrids of dragons and humans.
“Xia Yi, are you frightened?”
The Doctor came to her side, bent down, and whispered into her ear with meaningful weight.
“Now you’ve seen something you weren’t supposed to see…”
