    Volume 3 + Chapter 133: The Lord’s Response

    In a certain forest.

    “It’s almost complete.”

The witch Saphia gazed at the magic circle before her, thoroughly satisfied.

She raised her head to check the time.

The night of the full moon.

    Good—she hadn’t missed it.

Today was an extremely important day for the Calamity Witch.

    Caw! Caw! Caw!

A crow flew down from the sky and landed on the witch’s wide-brimmed hat, letting out an eerie cry.

Meanwhile, numerous crimson glows flickered in the woods behind Saphia.

These were all magical beasts corrupted by the aura of calamity.

Most creatures infected by the calamity’s aura would lose their reason and ability to think, reduced to frenzied monsters.

When these mutated beasts reached a certain level of corruption, they would fully become vassals of calamity—Calamity Beasts.

Calamity Beasts were far more terrifying than ordinary mutated beasts, even more violent and insane.

However, there were extremely rare exceptions.

Whether due to their own uniqueness or the calamity’s favor, some Calamity Beasts could retain a degree of self-awareness, becoming higher-tier existences than ordinary Calamity Beasts. They could even command and control other Calamity Beasts, like envoys of calamity.

The witch Saphia was one of these rare exceptions.

In the past, she had discarded her human body in pursuit of greater power, willingly accepting the calamity’s aura. Not only did she become a Calamity Beast, she even evolved into a witch.

Today was especially important to her because it was one of the few occasions when contact with the calamity was possible.

    “Bring them forth,” Saphia commanded.

The Calamity Beasts could sense that Saphia was a higher existence than themselves, so they obeyed instinctively, emerging from the forest one after another.

What the Calamity Beasts carried with them were living beings.

    “Ahhhh!!”

“No!! What are you trying to do?”

“Spare me, please, I beg you, spare me!!”

Saphia paid no attention to the pleas of these lives.

In her eyes, they were no longer her kin. There was no need for pity or sympathy—such emotions had vanished after she became a witch.

All she had to do was offer death to the great calamity.

    The ritual began.

    “Roar!!!”

The Calamity Beasts roared in unison. Their sinister aura flowed across the ground, converging into the magic circle and activating its patterns, commencing the sacrificial rite.

The sacrificial ritual was accompanied by the agonized wails of the living, who perished one after another. These cries of death would surely please the calamity.

Saphia knelt on one knee, facing the magic circle with utmost devotion.

The Calamity Beasts prostrated themselves on the ground. These usually frenzied monsters now lay docile and obedient.

“My Lord, please answer me,” Saphia whispered in supplication.

Though she had become a witch—an envoy of calamity—the calamity had almost never initiated contact with her.

She knew that the calamity was far too great, existing on a plane entirely beyond her own.

For such a supreme being, the only option was to exhaust every means to earn its favor.

After becoming a witch, Saphia had devoted all her efforts to offering death to the calamity. She didn’t even know how many years had passed before she finally learned the name of the master she served—Samael.

“Lord Samael, the current plan is proceeding smoothly. I have divided the monsters I’ve created over the years into two groups. The lower-tier mutated beasts serve as bait to lure away most of the combat forces of the Laurel Tree Academy, leaving their defenses weakened and creating a prime opportunity.”

“The elite Calamity Beasts and I will soon launch an assault to capture the Laurel Tree Academy.”

“By then, the Laurel Tree Academy will fall.”

Saphia was well acquainted with the Laurel Tree Academy’s situation.

In the past, she had studied there and had even been an outstanding graduate.

But the stronger she grew, the more she realized the limits of humanity.

Thus, in pursuit of greater power, she willingly allowed herself to be infected by the calamity’s aura…

Until today, when she had become an envoy of calamity.

“Within the Laurel Tree Academy stands a giant laurel tree. Its roots are connected to the underground ley lines, drawing mana from them to supply the academy endlessly.”

“Precisely because of this trait, if we can seize the Laurel Tree Academy and use your great calamity’s aura to control the laurel tree, we can reverse its function. The roots connect to the underground ley lines, allowing the calamity’s aura to spread to every inch of the Laurel Tree Academy’s autonomous region. It will then become a cradle for Calamity Beasts.”

“From then on, Calamity Beasts will emerge in endless numbers. By the time humanity reacts, the army of Calamity Beasts will be as vast as the ocean, drowning the Kingdom of Rhine and bringing death to every corner—until every life on this land is reaped!”

Saphia recounted her plans to the master she worshipped.

For this, she had prepared for who knew how long.

In the past, Samael had never responded to her, but she had never faltered, working diligently and tirelessly toward her goal.

This time, she had reported everything she had done. What would the result be?

Saphia nervously raised her head and saw the calamity’s aura swirling within the magic circle—the purest, most direct aura, something only the calamity itself could possess.

    This was… the Lord’s response!!

    “Lord Samael!!”

Saphia was ecstatic, overwhelmed by an immense sense of fulfillment. She knelt on the ground and wept, like a fervent believer who had just realized the ultimate meaning of her existence.

For the first time, her master had acknowledged her actions.

“Ah, Lord Samael, there is also an untamed witch within the Laurel Tree Academy. Her name is Xia Yi. I wish to awaken her—what do you think?”

The calamity’s aura stirred, flowing from the center of the magic circle onto Saphia’s body.

    She could feel herself changing.

    It was the calamity’s blessing.

The witch’s calamity aura surged—violently, wildly, overwhelmingly! What in this world could possibly withstand it now?!

“Lord Samael, rest assured. I will surely take the Laurel Tree Academy.”

    —

    Laurel Tree Academy.

    In the magic department’s classroom.

Everyone was listening attentively to the lecture—except for one person who was asleep.

    That person was Xia Yi.

Lately, she has been slacking off more and more. Before, she at least made some effort to pretend, but now she didn’t even bother.

She would sleep as soon as class started, not even putting on an act, sleeping straight until the end.

    Biden’s cheek twitched.

    Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

The bell rang, signaling the end of class.

    “Mmm~ Haah~”

    Xia Yi stretched lazily.

    Hehehe, time to eat~

Before Biden could even dismiss the class, she had already stood up, ready to leave the classroom.

Biden’s lungs were about to explode from rage. No longer caring about decorum, he slammed his hand on the desk in front of everyone, looking ready for a fight as he roared at Xia Yi.

    “You can’t leave!”
