On a summer afternoon, a girl in a sailor uniform appeared before the protagonist, Hikaru Kawakami, carrying an urn. To the bewildered Hikaru, the girl introduced herself as the daughter of Mayuko Okazaki, Hikaru’s former lover. The girl informed Hikaru that Mayuko had committed suicide and requested that she keep the ashes at her home.

Thus began the peculiar cohabitation of Hikaru and the girl.
