Outer Sect, Lingyao (Spirit Herb) Hall, Baiyun Sect.
If one were to name the most relaxed, most profitable, and least crowded workplace in the entire Outer Sect, it would no doubt be the Spirit Herb Hall.
The Spirit Herb Hall usually only required one disciple to oversee large sections of herb gardens, medicinal fields, and spirit root patches. These herbs had varying growth cycles, but even the fastest ones needed at least half a month to mature. Managing them was practically effortless.
Moreover, since one watched over the herbs alone, it was beyond easy to stealthily pluck a few here and there. Whether exchanged for spirit stones, magical treasures, or secret techniques, it was all incredibly convenient—low effort, high reward!
On top of that, to ensure optimal herb growth, the entire Spirit Herb Hall was built on some of the sect’s most potent spirit veins. The density of spiritual energy here was more than double that of anywhere else in the Outer Sect.
Imagine cultivating in such an environment—how could anyone not benefit greatly?
Naturally, the Spirit Herb Hall became the most coveted post among Outer Sect disciples.
Unfortunately, it rarely recruited new people. Only when an existing disciple broke through to Foundation Establishment and entered the Inner Sect would a new spot open. Even then, they mostly recruited disciples for counter duty, not herb field management. At most, only a few dozen handled the actual gardens.
As Yu Xian walked over, he clearly sensed the dense spiritual energy, making him somewhat envious. Still, he quickly composed himself. With his jade pendant assisting him, the mines were a more suitable place for his cultivation.
There were hardly any disciples in the hall since not many knew how to refine pills. Thus, the large herb hall was fairly empty, with only a few female disciples lazily leaning against the counters, yawning and waiting for their shift to end so they could return to cultivation.
Naturally, Yu Xian’s arrival caught their attention immediately. All of them turned to look at him.
Being suddenly scrutinized by several attractive women in their twenties, Yu Xian felt a bit uneasy, but he kept his composure and walked toward the nearest one. Bowing politely, he said, “Senior sister, I’d like to buy some herbs for alchemy practice.”
He handed over the recipe for the Minor Spirit Pill.
“Oh? You’re so young and already trying to refine pills?” The female disciple, seeing Yu Xian looked only sixteen or so, chuckled teasingly. “Alchemy herbs are expensive, you know. I suggest you focus on cultivating while you’re still young. Wait until you’re older to dabble in alchemy.”
“Yeah, little junior, don’t get ahead of yourself,” another girl chimed in with a smirk. “Focus on your cultivation first, okay?”
The other girls laughed, clearly enjoying the banter. For them, teasing a young teenage boy was a fun way to pass the time.
Yu Xian merely shook his head, then said calmly, “Senior sister, please check the recipe and quote me the price.”
“Oho, little guy’s got some backbone.” The girl laughed again and nodded. “Fine, I’ll take a look. I’ll give you the price so you can give up.”
She picked up the recipe, glanced at it briefly, and chuckled. “Minor Spirit Pill? Oh, I know this one well. No need to check—twenty-one herbs per batch, one batch costs twenty spirit stones.”
“Twenty stones a batch, little brother.” She smiled playfully. “See? I told you it was expensive. Go home, alchemy’s not something for you just yet. Listen to big sister, okay? Be a good boy.”
“Hahaha…”
The other girls giggled uncontrollably again.
Yu Xian, however, remained silent, neither leaving nor reacting. He simply stared at them calmly, waiting. Eventually, the awkward silence set in, and the laughter slowly died out.
The woman in front of him frowned slightly, then sighed. “Ugh, no fun anymore. Fine, how much do you want?”
“One hundred batches,” Yu Xian replied flatly.
“One hun… huh!?”
She instinctively nodded, then froze completely.
The mocking smiles on the other girls’ faces vanished instantly.
The entire hall fell into stunned silence as they stared at Yu Xian in disbelief.
“L-little brother, are you… messing with me?” The girl in front of him took a deep breath, trying to suppress her irritation. “Big sister’s not in the mood to play with you. Come back when you’re older if you want to learn how to flirt.”
“Hmph, bold for someone so young.”
“If it weren’t for his age, we would’ve already slapped him around.”
“I bet someone from the Alchemy Hall sent him to mess with Sister Lü. They’ve been trying to hit on her forever.”
The other women began gossiping in low voices again, shooting Yu Xian dirty looks.
Yu Xian sighed helplessly and said, “Senior sister, I am not messing with you or playing around. I genuinely want to purchase one hundred batches of herbs for Minor Spirit Pills.”
Without further comment, and unwilling to waste any more time, he placed a storage pouch on the counter. “Two thousand spirit stones. Please check, senior sister. I’d appreciate it if you could hurry.”
Sister Lü was stunned again.
The girls who were mocking him also fell silent, eyes wide as they stared at the storage pouch.
This boy… was serious?
And he wanted… a hundred batches!?
You have to understand—even the Alchemy Hall only distributed one hundred batches of Minor Spirit Pill herbs per month. He just bought the entire month’s quota… by himself!?
Sister Lü, who looked about twenty-one or twenty-two, studied Yu Xian suspiciously for a moment, then finally reached out and infused her spiritual energy into the pouch to inspect it.
“Ah!”
A cry of shock rang out in the herb hall.
Sister Lü froze completely. Her hand trembled as she held the pouch.
Inside… sat seventeen mid-grade spirit stones, glowing brilliantly.
Chapter 19: Buying Spirit Herbs at the Herb Pavilion — Female Disciples Tear Into Each Other
Outside the Outer Sect of the Lingyun Sect stood the Spirit Herb Pavilion.
Among all the work halls, the one with the most benefits, the most desirable position, the easiest job, and the least number of people—was undoubtedly the Spirit Herb Pavilion.
Here, a single disciple could oversee a vast herb garden or spirit field, cultivating various rare and wondrous spirit herbs. These herbs had varied growth cycles, the shortest taking at least several months to mature. Managing them was a rather worry-free task.
Moreover, since one handled the garden alone, sneaking a few herbs now and then was an easy thing. Whether exchanged for spirit stones, magic treasures, or secret techniques, the perks were endless. It was both easy and profitable.
Even more enticing, the Spirit Herb Pavilion was built atop several of the sect’s top spiritual veins to ensure optimal herb growth. The concentration of spiritual energy here was more than double that of elsewhere.
Cultivating in such an environment? The benefits were immeasurable.
Thus, the Spirit Herb Pavilion was the most coveted place among outer sect disciples.
Unfortunately, the Herb Pavilion rarely recruited new people—only when a disciple broke through to Foundation Establishment and entered the Inner Sect did a spot open up.
Even when they did recruit, it was mostly for front-counter work. The actual herb caretakers numbered only a few dozen.
As Yu Xian walked in, he could clearly feel the denser spiritual energy, and a twinge of envy crept into his heart.
Still, envy was just envy. With his jade pendant’s help, the mining zone was more suited for him.
There weren’t many disciples buying herbs at the Pavilion—very few people could refine pills themselves.
Thus, the grand hall of the Pavilion was quiet. Only a few female disciples stood behind the counters, yawning from boredom, waiting for their shift to end so they could go cultivate.
Yu Xian’s arrival immediately drew their attention, and they all turned to look at him.
Being suddenly stared at by a group of attractive women in their twenties made Yu Xian feel a bit uncomfortable.
But he still walked calmly to the nearest one and bowed politely. “Senior Sister, I’d like to buy some herbs to refine a basic pill.”
As he spoke, he handed over the pill recipe for the “Minor Spirit Pill.”
“Oh? You’re so young, and you want to refine pills? Herbs for pill refining are quite expensive. My advice, little brother—focus on cultivation while you’re still young. Learn alchemy when you’re older.”
The female disciple laughed lightly, obviously amused.
“Yes, little brother, don’t overthink it. Focus on your cultivation,” another one giggled.
The others behind the counter also laughed, clearly finding it amusing to tease a sixteen-year-old boy.
Yu Xian shook his head, looked at the first girl, and said seriously, “Please just check the list and give me a price.”
“Oh? A little guy with an attitude,” she chuckled, taking the list. “Alright, I’ll give you a price so you can give up.”
After a quick glance, she smiled. “Minor Spirit Pill, huh? I know this one. 21 ingredients per set, 20 spirit stones each.”
“Little brother, that’s 20 spirit stones per portion.”
She put the recipe down and looked at Yu Xian teasingly. “Told you it’s expensive. Just give up and focus on cultivation. Be a good boy.”
“HAHAHAHA…”
The other girls broke into laughter again.
Yu Xian said nothing. He just stood there, calmly watching them laugh—until their own laughter faded into awkward silence.
The girl’s brow furrowed. Finally, she sighed. “Fine. Boring anyway. How many do you want?”
“One hundred sets,” Yu Xian replied calmly.
“One hund—huh?”
She froze.
The other girls also stopped laughing. Their mocking expressions vanished instantly.
The hall fell into dead silence as they stared at Yu Xian.
“Little brother… are you messing with us?”
The girl forced a calm voice, clearly holding back anger. “We don’t have time to play. Come back when you’re older.”
“Humph, gutsy little guy.”
“If he weren’t young, we’d beat him up by now.”
“I bet the alchemy boys sent him to flirt with Sister Lü—they’ve been sweet on her.”
The others muttered with rolled eyes.
Yu Xian sighed. “Senior Sister, I’m not here to mess around. I really want to buy one hundred sets of herbs to refine Minor Spirit Pills.”
He then placed a storage pouch on the counter. “Two thousand spirit stones. Please check.”
Lü Shimei (Senior Sister Lü) froze.
The others also looked on in disbelief at the pouch.
This boy… was seriously buying that much?
That’s the entire monthly supply of herbs for the pill workshop!
Lü Shimei hesitated, then took the pouch and channeled her spiritual energy to inspect it.
“Ah!”
A gasp rang out.
Her entire body went stiff. Her hand trembled.
Inside the pouch were seventeen mid-grade spirit stones—radiant and dazzling!
“Senior Sister?” Yu Xian prompted again. “If everything’s in order, please prepare the hundred sets.”
“Ah? Yes, yes! Just a moment!”
Lü Shimei snapped out of it, clutching the pouch and dashing into the inner chamber.
Behind that chamber was the herb garden spanning dozens of miles.
The other girls were stunned.
This boy actually had that much money?
Two thousand spirit stones!?
What luck! Why did it land on her head?
She’ll make at least 600 stones in commission!
“Um, little brother, you’re really buying?”
A slightly older woman, around 27 or 28, smiled charmingly. “Why don’t you buy from me instead? I’ll sell it for 19 stones per set.”
The other two looked thoughtful.
Yu Xian turned toward the woman.
She smiled coquettishly. “If that’s still too much, how about 18 stones per set? Just cancel the order and buy from me.”
“Alright,” Yu Xian nodded.
Joy flashed in the woman’s eyes, her cheeks flushed. Even at 18 per set, she’d still earn 400 stones!
When Lü Shimei returned, flushed and sweating after a whole incense stick’s time—
“Junior Brother! I’ve prepared one hundred sets of herbs for Minor Spirit Pills! Please check!”
She excitedly handed over the storage pouch.
But Yu Xian didn’t take it. “I’d like to return the order.”
“W-what!?” Her smile froze. “Return? You need a reason! You can’t just return it out of nowhere!”
Yu Xian pointed to the other woman. “She offered me 18 per set. Clearly, your price was too high. So I’ll buy from her.”
The woman was stunned—he just sold her out!?
“Zhang Quluo!”
Lü Shimei turned on her in fury. “How shameless can you be!?”
“Shameless!? You charged him 20! That’s scamming a junior!”
“You’re the one who’s shameless!”
“You seduce buyers! That’s why so many from the pill hall like buying from you!”
The two began shouting and slinging every insult possible.
Lü Shimei’s face turned pale. She trembled, unable to reply.
Zhang Quluo sneered and looked at Yu Xian. “Little brother, come buy from me at 18 each!”
Yu Xian remained calm and looked at Lü Shimei. “Please refund my spirit stones.”
Eyes red, Lü Shimei suddenly shouted, “I’ll give it to you for 17—no, 16 spirit stones a set! Just buy from me!”
Zhang Quluo’s smug face instantly froze.
Yu Xian smiled. “Alright.”
Zhang Quluo panicked. “Junior Brother! I’ll give it to you for 15!”
“Zhang Quluo! You’re a bastard!” Lü Shimei burst into tears. “Please… don’t cancel… I’ll lose everything…”
Yu Xian shook his head. “No need. Sixteen is fine. Business should leave some profit for others.”
He accepted the pouch from her and glanced inside—one hundred neatly arranged herb sets.
“Really!?” Lü Shimei’s face lit up. She wiped her tears and returned four mid-grade spirit stones. “Thank you, Junior Brother. If you need herbs in the future, come to me.”
“Gladly.”
Yu Xian nodded and left.
