Chapter 2: The Man Who Calls on God
Anna was very happy, as she disrupted Leader One’s wedding plans and cunningly convinced Leader One to appoint a part-time Chief Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She continued to serve as the Ministry of Finance Chief Secretary.
Today was the first working day as part-time Chief Secretary for Anna in two ministries. She smiled all the way from her home to the Cabinet Office. The security guard was surprised by her sudden change in temperament and quickly avoided her.
However…
On Anna’s first day as the Chief Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the first document she handled was a letter from England, where Queen Victoria appointed Schultz as a viscount.
The second document was from the Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg, who appointed Schultz as a count.
Anna looked at the two documents and fell into deep thought.
The office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs was located in the corner of the building, with windows on the east and south sides. Anna von Bismarck sat quietly amidst the noisy sounds coming from the street and the river, focusing on the documents in front of her as her mind raced.
"Oh~!!!….Oh, wait." Anna suddenly understood, but not completely.
Just then, Cabinet Secretary Schultz came into the Minister of Foreign Affairs’ office with a big smile. He was there to receive his title and nobility documents.
Schultz not only had the title of a baron in Prussia, but also a viscount in England, and a count in Mecklenburg. Although the latter two titles didn’t come with real power or inherited land, they did come with a noble allowance. Plus, being a noble in three countries was a huge honor and symbol of power.
"Mr. Schultz… Baron Schultz, I’d like to ask you a few questions," Anna said humbly as she stood up and bowed slightly.
"Sure, go ahead."
Schultz felt pleased that the headstrong Anna now showed some respect. As the Cabinet Secretary and the leader of Prussia’s civil servants, Schultz was willing to guide Anna.
"Even though the engagement fell through, why did England still grant you a title? I can understand why Mecklenburg did."
"It was actually England’s initial request to create the engagement, publicize it, then cancel it. I…"
Schultz wanted to continue, but Anna raised her hand to stop him, wanting to figure out the logic herself.
In the 19th century, marriages between countries were complicated. Marrying someone from another country didn’t have much impact, especially when it came to important matters.
If Leader One and Elizabeth get married and Leader One doesn’t help Victoria, it depends on his mood whether he helps her or not.
If Leader One proposes to Elizabeth and then breaks off the engagement, he must help Victoria.
If Leader One helps Victoria, she will publicly deny any engagement rumors and blame the media for stirring up trouble. She will also emphasize the friendly relations between the two countries, denying any consideration of a marriage between Leader One and Elizabeth.
If Leader One doesn’t help Victoria, she will accuse Prussia of proposing and then breaking off the engagement as an insult to the British Empire.
Victoria wants Prussia to support her claim to the throne without having to marry off her sister. She instructs Baron Schultz to handle the situation by proposing and then breaking off the engagement with Leader One, so that Schultz can gain titles, allowance, and status.
Anna looks at the smiling Baron Schultz and suspects him of meddling in the marriage affair for personal gains.
Schultz suppresses a smile, picks a bottle of wine, and starts to enjoy it by himself.
Anna (shocked), "Who else are you benefiting from?"
The Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg liked Leader One, so she asked Baron Schultz to sabotage Leader One and Elizabeth’s marriage.
The traditional nobility and noble capitalists of Prussia wanted the prince regent to marry within their group, so they asked Baron Schultz to disrupt the marriage.
Catherine wanted to pressure Leader One every night during this time, so she asked Baron Schultz to reduce the prince regent’s daytime workload through operations. With Leader One having free time during the day, he could not refuse Catherine’s pressure at night.
Leader One wanted a realistic painter to paint a portrait of Elizabeth. Schultz chose the realistic painter who bribed him the most out of 64 candidates.
Schultz also briefly considered making money from Princess Elizabeth, Napoleon III, or the Tsar, but he was too busy with work to carry out the operations.
Throughout the marriage chaos, Baron Schultz gained both fame and fortune. He obtained two titles, became an advisor or honorary director for 15 new companies or groups, and even secured a position as an honorary university president.
Anna always thought she was the cleverest, but now she realized she was too naive compared to the cunning Baron Schultz. He was so skilled that even God would be amazed.
"Learn, child. You are not yet qualified in politics, diplomacy, organizational operations, or dealing with those in power," Schultz preached.
Anna nodded, knowing she must now seriously study and learn from Baron Schultz. His ability to dance on the edge of a knife while juggling seven eggs was like an art form.
So, everyone felt satisfied because they achieved their goals, except for the prince regent," Anna concluded.
Schultz asked, "What did the prince regent lose?"
Anna said surprisingly, "He was manipulated by England to help Queen Victoria seize power, and after I helped, he even made me the part-time Chief Secretary of the Foreign Ministry."
"Firstly, the current international situation has already determined that England and Prussia will surely stand together, naturally entering a honeymoon period."
"Secondly, a key reason for the chaos in England is the economic crisis. When the economy is bad, all problems are magnified. But when the economic crisis passes, everything will recover. Queen Victoria is already 19 years old, and with the interference of the Duke and Duchess of Kent as regents causing chaos, England will gradually restore power to Queen Victoria."
"The prince regent only needs to provide all support to Victoria besides help. After Victoria regains power, she should also thank the prince regent."
"Regarding the Foreign Ministry? The prince regent has always intended for you to handle diplomatic work, but he is waiting for the right moment, waiting for you to become angry before bringing it up to placate you."
Anna was already shocked enough today. She asked with a resigned expression, could it be that Leader One had seen through everything a long time ago?
Baron Schultz was also uncertain. Leader One might be on the hundredth level or on the first level. But in any case, he did not lose anything. The main purpose of this marriage alliance event was to divert public attention, and it was successfully achieved.
"If everyone makes money, someone must lose it, right?" Anna asked again.
Baron Schultz began searching for information these days… Oh, it turns out someone is losing money. Princess Elizabeth believed she was going to marry the Prince Regent of Prussia. Elizabeth ended relationships with all the men in her palace, eagerly waiting for the wedding, but… well, things didn’t go as expected.
