Chapter 13: Thousands of Troops Avoid the Black Eagle
The Regent’s weapons and warhorses arrived for battle, along with some top-secret letters from Berlin.
Five of these letters were from Anna, while the remaining ones were from Baron Schultz, Ron, and Hans, each with one letter.
These secret letters discuss different matters, but all directly relate to the Liberal Revolution. The Regent left Berlin three weeks ago and secretly instructed some actions against the major revolution. Their efforts in Berlin have been successful and everything is going according to plan.
Leader One passed the letters to Catherine and Moltke. After reading them with serious faces, both quickly relaxed.
"The big revolution is expected to break out next month. I will stay on the battlefield a little longer, and as soon as things start to heat up, I will return to Berlin," said Moltke.
Moltke stated that the chaotic South German battle was expected to end by the end of this month.
The intervention from other countries is decreasing. Each country is bringing its troops back home. The monarchs of various countries are getting worried about the unrest at home, leading them to recall their large armies to major cities to maintain their rule.
The people of Switzerland had been nominally unified but actually divided for over 600 years, controlled and interfered by various countries, suffering from humiliation. The desire for unity and true independence was deeply ingrained in every Swiss person’s heart.
Switzerland had a strong military power. Swiss mercenaries were the most outstanding and renowned in the late Middle Ages and modern history. As long as you paid them enough money, they would fight for you until the last man. They once fought with long spears in different places for their employers. Now, they pick up rifles to defend their homeland for their country’s new beginning.
The Swiss War for Unity and Independence ended from December 1838 to mid-January 1839. They became a truly sovereign independent country as the intervening forces gradually withdrew.
The turmoil in South German region was not over yet. Prince Regent Redel of Prussia was preparing to lead his troops to capture Ingelfingen Town.
Initially, the turmoil in South Germany had no significance for Prussia. Now that the Swiss War had ended and the countries had withdrawn their forces to suppress internal revolutions, the turmoil in South Germany seemed even more meaningless.
It was a waste of time and energy to fight for the small, insignificant Ingelfingen Town, with only seven to eight hundred residents and no strategic resources or importance.
Leader One simply did not want to return to Berlin. He wanted to delay time on the front lines until the outbreak of internal revolutions at home. Even though there was no war, he still had to find some battles to fight.
The prince regent put on his full-body armor, a specially reinforced custom-made Milanese style armor with an average thickness of two to three millimeters, featuring reinforced chest armor and a domed design that had some effect similar to tank sloped armor, with the thickest part reaching four to five millimeters in equivalent thickness.
His full-body armor weighed 33 kilograms, while Catherine and others’ standard late-period full-body armor weighed only 23 kilograms.
Since it is the king’s armor for battle, it needs to be extra strong. Even if Leader One doesn’t use magic energy, this turtle shell of his can withstand all bullets from the early 19th century within a thirty-meter range. If he uses magic energy to weaken the incoming bullets, it can resist direct hits from cannons weighing less than 7 pounds.
Nowadays, field cannons are usually six pounds or less, like the opponents now, who are equipped with six-pound breech-loading rifled short-barrel copper cannons from the end of the last century.
Leader One, as one of the best among the Magic Energy Knights, wears a specially made super heavy armor that turns him into a human water tank. He can even withstand direct hits from small-caliber enemy cannons, which is incredibly daunting for his opponents.
At nine o’clock in the morning, it’s almost time to launch the attack. Catherine hands a Hohenzollern flag that is four meters and six centimeters long to Your Highness the Regent.
With a white background, black border, a red clawed black eagle – the symbol flag of the Prussian royalty, also the battle flag of the royal guards. Usually carried by Catherine, but today Leader One personally takes it as he heads into battle.
Held upright, it’s a flag. Laid flat, it’s a sturdy cavalry lance. Soon, Leader One will be charging into battle carrying it.
Moltke has led the national army infantry out to draw the enemy coalition forces out of their stronghold to face them.
Leader One rides a high-stepping horse, inspecting the First Cavalry Brigade of the standing army.
He says, "Wherever I go, you follow. Whoever I kill, you kill. Today, we shall bring an end to this town."
The Prussian cavalry soldiers got on their horses, but they didn’t feel like fighting. They looked at Leader One and the twelve Magic Energy Knights behind him.
The Magic Energy Knights wore full body armor and the best equipment. They also had supernatural power called magic energy, strong bodies, excellent fighting skills, and they weren’t afraid to die. Each one was exceptional.
The soldiers of the First Cavalry Brigade were just ordinary people. The cavalry soldiers had iron breastplates, but the dragoon soldiers had no protection at all. They knew they would face heavy losses in the upcoming battle and couldn’t muster up their morale.
Leader One decided actions spoke louder than words and began to inspire everyone through his deeds.
The Prince Regent of Prussia led the way, leaving the camp and appearing on the plain battlefield. Catherine quickly followed with the guards, and the twelve Magic Energy Knights automatically formed a formation with the Prince Regent at the front.
The cavalry soldiers in breastplates from the First Cavalry Brigade followed suit, while the dragoon soldiers moved towards the left flank.
Leader One rode at the forefront, controlling his horse to advance steadily towards the enemy’s formation. The enemy was behind a simple earth wall, shooting at the Prussian militia. They only had five to six dozen men on the flank.
Since the enemy was weak, there was no need for fancy tactics. They just needed to charge straight on and crush them.
Leader One and Catherine were considered heavy tanks, the other Royal Guards’ Magic Energy Knights were light tanks, while the enemy were like infantry with almost no anti-tank weapons.
Even if caught in a fight and pulled down from their horse, they relied on their magical energy and strong personal combat skills to start a fierce battle on the spot.
"Three hundred yards!"
Catherine shouted loudly, passing on the estimated distance to the enemy, with the cavalry behind passing the sound row by row.
"Two hundred yards!"
The enemy could already feel the majestic momentum of the iron cavalry. The heavy and dense sound of horseshoes was like the death knell.
"One hundred yards!"
The armored cavalry spread out from the back, took out pistols for a quick round of shots, and then immediately drew their sabers.
The Magic Energy Knights centered around Prince Regent Redel raised their long lances. The royal guards trained together daily, displaying great teamwork. They could conduct a tight wall-like charge. However, Redel didn’t coordinate well with the team, resulting in some gaps in the heavy cavalry’s wall charge, but it didn’t cause any major damage.
The enemy’s muskets were weak in their attack. Leader One didn’t know how many bullets were coming his way. The bullets weakened by magical energy hit the horse armor or people’s armor, making a tinkling sound.
"Fifty yards!"
The warhorses began to gallop. The Magic Energy Knights made sure their lances were securely attached to the lance rack, gripped the middle part tightly, and prepared to make the traditional dish, candied haws.
At first, the enemies tried to attack with firearms, then attempted to use bayonets by leaning their rifle butts on the low earthen wall. However, as the fully armored cavalry approached with a terrifying momentum, gleaming with cold light on their rigid lances, it completely shattered their psychological defenses.
The fully armored cavalry charged at you with all their might, led by a Magic Energy Knight. A soldier who can keep calm and not wet their pants in such a situation is either an elite warrior or a fool.
Leader One saw their fearful expressions, their cowardly actions of dropping their weapons, covering their heads, crouching in the trench, and their abandonment of the earthen wall defense to start fleeing.
Under the closed helmet, Leader One’s expression remained incredibly calm. It was as if he was not the one piercing candied haws with his lance, nor the one who abandoned the lance and drew his sword to start fighting alone.
A white horse maneuvered freely in the chaotic battlefield, its sword dyed red. The last impression of the fallen warriors should have been the black eagle symbolizing royal authority on the prince regent’s chestplate.
The scattered enemy troops witnessed the efficient reaping of the grass by the white horse and black eagle knight. They all dodged and fled, no one dared to stand and fight back. All they could think about was escaping for their lives.
Leader One emerged unscathed, with only a few dents on his armor and minor injuries on his horse’s legs.
Regular soldiers fought for days without any success, but just a single attack from a dozen Magic Energy Knights scattered the enemy completely, turning the battlefield into a bloody slaughterhouse in an instant.
After the massacre, Leader One stopped his horse, standing in the midst of the corpses, the combined forces of the Hessian Baden coalition army had been completely wiped out, and the battle for the town came to an end.
"Magic Energy Knights are overwhelming against regular soldiers, but unfortunately Prussia has too few Magical Energy Department teams. If only I had over ten thousand Magic Energy Knights like the Great Ming…"
Catherine took off her helmet and wiped her sweat gently, "Then you would be the only emperor in Europe."
Moltke said, "Although you are in high spirits, I must remind you, Your Highness the Regent, not every Magic Energy Knight in this world is as powerful as you and the Royal Guard. Most Magic Energy Knights can only withstand bullets, they can’t even stop a three-pound cannonball."
"As long as the regular army has enough cannons and commanders use the right tactics, the Magic Energy Knight forces are not invincible."
Catherine (displeased), "Moltke, can’t you see the situation? Are you blind?"
Leader One did not mind Moltke’s lack of sensitivity; he knew that powerful Magic Energy Knights were like heavy tanks, irreplaceable and unmatched, with most only at the level of light tanks and armored cars, and the number of European Magic Energy Knights was pitifully low.
Perhaps future scientists could achieve replicability through research on magic energy, but in 19th century Europe, Magic Energy Knights were destined to remain a rare and specialized force used for attacking.
As for how the Magical Energy Department from the East will perform and position themselves, we will have to wait until the Far East War to find out.
