Chapter 76: Short Little Legs
Zhou Lanting didn’t stop him. Although Yi Qianmo was less skilled than him, Zhou had to admit that when it came to cleverness, Yi Qianmo surpassed him. Sometimes, he even wondered if an old monster resided inside Yi Qianmo’s body.
“I have a favor to ask. Do you know the Disguise Skill?” Yi Qianmo asked abruptly.
“Why do you need the Disguise Skill?” Zhou Lanting looked puzzled. But soon, understanding dawned on his face. “Are you scared?”
“I’m not scared,” Yi Qianmo replied calmly. “I just want to avoid unnecessary trouble along the way. After all, we’ve already offended the prince of Yan Kingdom, and I don’t want to attract more problems before we even consolidate what we’ve gained.”
In truth, Yi Qianmo was less concerned about the Yan Kingdom prince and more wary of the Tang family retaliating against him.
“The Disguise Skill is a minor trick,” Zhou Lanting said. “But if you truly want to fool a cultivator, you’ll need to master it carefully.”
He took out a jade slip. “This is the disguise method used by my demon sect.”
Yi Qianmo accepted it gratefully.
A few days later, they arrived at the capital of the Yan Kingdom. Compared to this grand city, Green Cloud City was like a rustic village.
The capital was heavily fortified due to the looming threat of the northern barbarians. It felt more like a massive fortress than a city. In addition to the central city, there were four outer cities, all surrounded by a wide moat fed by the Yan River, large enough for merchant ships to navigate.
The outer cities buzzed with activity as merchant ships from the south docked and unloaded their goods. Had it not been for the attack earlier, Yi Qianmo would have likely sailed into the capital aboard Su Yucheng’s ship.
There were no stringent checkpoints outside the city gates. As long as one wasn’t carrying forbidden weapons, entering the city was straightforward.
Yi Qianmo and Zhou Lanting chose to stay at Tingyu Tavern, an inn renowned for its bustling crowd and constant flow of information. It wasn’t the largest inn in the city, but it was the best place to catch rumors and news.
When they arrived, three topics dominated the conversations at Tingyu Tavern:
The important exam at Tianyuan Academy.
Yi Qianmo’s rumored connection to the Yan Kingdom’s Grand Princess and the Tang family of Qin Land.
The Blood Demon Sect’s search for a stolen treasure.
Although all three topics were loosely connected to Yi Qianmo, he focused only on the exam, disregarding the rest.
Zhou Lanting went to her room to refine the Heavenly Demon Pill and increase her strength. Yi Qianmo, meanwhile, had his own plans.
In his room, Yi Qianmo eagerly unpacked the contents of his storage bag.
The prince of Yan Kingdom had amassed quite a collection. Rare healing herbs, over a thousand spirit stones, and other treasures filled the jade boxes. Among these, Yi Qianmo found everything he needed to create the Body Origin Fixing Pill.
As he counted his gains, a sudden buzzing sensation came from his chest. A flash of white light appeared, and a fluffy creature landed on the table with a soft thud.
“Gududu…”
Old Bai opened its bright blue eyes and curiously scanned the items on the table. Suddenly, the spirit stones floated up, and Old Bai opened its mouth, swallowing the stones in one gulp.
“Chirp chirp!”
Old Bai let out a satisfied burp, its big, innocent eyes glinting mischievously as it seemed to ask, “Is there more?”
Yi Qianmo’s eyes widened in disbelief. “You little thief!”
He raised his hand to hit Old Bai, but the creature transformed into a blur of white light, effortlessly dodging the blow.
The table cracked under his misplaced punch, scattering boxes everywhere. Old Bai, now floating mid-air, bared its tiny teeth, glaring at Yi Qianmo as if it had been wronged.
“You ate my spirit stones and now you’re angry at me?!” Yi Qianmo shouted, chasing after it. “Do you know how hard I worked for those stones? You black-hearted fiend! I’ll start calling you Blackie from now on!”
“Chirp chirp chirp!”
Old Bai floated higher, squeaking indignantly, its fluffy body trembling. Suddenly, four stubby legs emerged from its round form.
The sight caught Yi Qianmo off guard. “You’ve got short legs now? Are you mocking me?”
Old Bai waddled awkwardly on the ground, its tiny legs barely able to support its plump body. It stumbled over to a box, picked it up with its short arms, and floated it towards Yi Qianmo.
“Chirp!”
The box looked old and unassuming, wrapped with a simple cloth ribbon.
“What now?” Yi Qianmo muttered, eyeing the box skeptically. He opened it to reveal a clear crystal ball inside.
Curious, he infused the ball with spiritual power, but nothing happened. Frustrated, he tried smearing his blood on it, but the blood rolled off without a trace.
“What a useless trinket!” he grumbled, contemplating throwing it away.
Before he could, Old Bai chirped loudly, snatching the crystal ball and holding it up with its tiny arms.
To Yi Qianmo’s astonishment, the ball began to glow, intricate patterns forming across its surface. The patterns shifted and coalesced into a complete image.
Yi Qianmo leaned in, his frustration replaced by curiosity. “What in the world is this…?”
