Chapter 69: Old Bai
Seeing Taoist Qingmu’s shocked expression, Yi Qianmo didn’t hesitate and explained, “I found it in the ashes after your sculpture turned to dust.”
“Impossible! The Key of the Sky is the key to unlocking the main hub of Minggu Tower. How could it just appear like that?” Taoist Qingmu exclaimed, disbelief written all over his face.
“Shouldn’t I be asking you that?” Yi Qianmo shot back. “If what you say is true, does this mean I can control Minggu Tower with this key?”
“Essentially, yes,” Taoist Qingmu replied. “But controlling the restrictions of Minggu Tower isn’t so simple. First, the Key of the Sky must recognize you as its master.”
“How does that work?” Yi Qianmo asked, intrigued.
“You must pass the Trials of the Lord of the Sky and earn his approval,” Taoist Qingmu explained gravely. “In the past, my fellow disciples and I attempted the trial but failed. Many of us perished in the attempt.”
“So, it’s useless in its current state?” Yi Qianmo asked, his tone dripping with irony.
“Not entirely,” Taoist Qingmu countered. “Having the Key of the Sky is a necessary prerequisite for the trial. While it doesn’t guarantee success, it increases your chances. However, with your current abilities, even starting the trial could lead to…”
Yi Qianmo cut him off, tucking the key away. Changing the subject, he retrieved a small, fluffy white ball from his pocket. “What about this? Do you know what it is?”
Taoist Qingmu blinked. “Isn’t that just a white fur ball?”
“A white fur ball?” Yi Qianmo chuckled. “This ‘fur ball’ came out of Minggu Tower, and it crushed a red-haired monster like it was nothing.”
When he recounted the incident, Taoist Qingmu’s eyes widened in alarm.
“If it came from Minggu Tower, it must be a Great Devil,” Taoist Qingmu muttered. “But… the Great Devils inside shouldn’t be able to escape on their own.”
“You’ve never seen it before?” Yi Qianmo pressed.
“No,” Taoist Qingmu admitted. “During my last trial, I didn’t encounter such a creature. But anything that emerges from Minggu Tower is bound to be extraordinary.”
The little white ball suddenly stirred, its bright blue eyes snapping open. Its body expanded as it floated lazily upward, circling the sword where Taoist Qingmu resided.
“Chirp chirp!”
Though it had no mouth, the creature emitted curious sounds, its gaze fixed on Taoist Qingmu, who shrank under its scrutiny.
After a moment, the creature lost interest, floated back to Yi Qianmo, and snuggled into his arms.
“Not so fast,” Yi Qianmo said, holding it up. “You need a name. How about Little White?”
The creature puffed up indignantly, its fluffy fur bristling as it let out a series of irritated chirps.
“Not happy with that?” Yi Qianmo mused. “Okay, what about Little Yellow, Little Green, or Little Black?”
With each suggestion, the creature puffed up further.
“Fine, how about Old Bai?” Yi Qianmo teased.
At that, the creature relaxed, its fur smoothing out as it let out a satisfied sigh. It nestled into his chest, drifting back to sleep.
Taoist Qingmu watched the interaction uneasily. “That thing is dangerous. You should get rid of it. Nothing from Minggu Tower is ever harmless.”
Yi Qianmo hesitated, recalling the creature’s overwhelming power, but its endearing demeanor swayed him.
He changed the subject, producing a jade tablet. “You practice demonic cultivation, right? I need your help modifying this technique. Don’t try anything funny, or else…”
Taoist Qingmu glanced at the tablet, nodded quickly, and returned to the sword.
Days later, Yi Qianmo emerged from the secret chamber, his power stabilized. The Yi family had consolidated their control over Green Cloud City in his absence.
Zhou Lanting waited by the door, her expression impatient. “Is it done?”
Yi Qianmo handed her the jade slip. “It’s fixed. I didn’t realize your technique had such a deep origin. But I’d advise against practicing demonic cultivation—it’s a dangerous path.”
Zhou Lanting snatched the jade slip, smirking. “And who are you to give advice? Without a spiritual root, you might never even reach the Foundation Establishment Stage.”
Her words hit a nerve, but Yi Qianmo kept his composure. “How’s Green Dragon Mountain?” he asked.
“Chaotic,” Zhou Lanting replied. “The secret realm’s entrance has vanished, and the mountain is now covered in magma. Every major sect has sent Golden Core masters, but there’s no sign of the Fire Demon.”
“Did you really acquire the Anomalous Fire?” she asked, her gaze piercing.
“Mind your own business,” Yi Qianmo retorted.
Zhou Lanting scowled. “When are we leaving for Tianyuan Academy?”
“Now,” Yi Qianmo said. “Escort me there, and we’ll be even.”
Without another word, Zhou Lanting vanished.
At the border of Yan Kingdom, the Tang family caravan came to a halt.
“I know you’re dissatisfied,” the Tang family elder said coldly. “So, I’m giving you a chance for revenge.”
Tang Yuan looked up, his eyes blazing. “Show me the way, Elder.”
“The Yi family’s ancestral treasure is with Yi Qianmo. He’s heading to Yan Kingdom’s capital. Retrieve it,” the elder ordered.
“And can I kill him?” Tang Yuan asked, his voice laced with venom.
“Spare his life,” the elder replied. “The young lady would not approve otherwise. I’ll assign two Foundation Establishment guards to assist you. The rest is up to you.”
