Chapter 62: Pure Spirit Fire
Yi Qianmo took the Five Element Refuge Bead and dove back into the fiery lava to hide.
Moments later, roars echoed through the cavern. The presence of the Fire Demon loomed nearby, but Yi Qianmo remained patient. Only when all was silent did he cautiously emerge, climbing back to the rock wall and slipping into the cave.
The cavern was dim, lit only by faint, flickering flames. The walls glowed with an eerie red light, hinting at the immense heat within.
In the center of the cave stood a stone mound, and atop it burned a small, ethereal white flame. The space around the flame shimmered and twisted, as if reality itself were bending in its presence.
“This is…”
Yi Qianmo’s eyes gleamed with astonishment as he stepped closer.
“Pure Spirit Fire!”
Anomalous Fire exists in two levels: Earth Fire and Heaven Fire. Seventy-two types of Earth Fire and thirty-six types of Heaven Fire, each one distinct. But this flame was unlike any of them.
This Pure Spirit Fire stood apart from the hierarchy of flames. It was unique, devoid of consciousness, and much easier to tame. However, that simplicity didn’t equate to weakness. Pure Spirit Fire, while only slightly hotter than True Fire, possessed the unparalleled ability to consume other flames and evolve.
Every flame it devoured would strengthen it, and, in turn, it could inherit the traits of those flames. If it consumed all known flames, it could potentially transform into the legendary Fire of Chaos—a flame said to have birthed the world itself, capable of reducing anything to ash.
“The Fire Demon must have been using this Pure Spirit Fire to refine itself,” Yi Qianmo realized.
The Fire Demon hadn’t tamed the flame yet, likely because it was attempting to strengthen itself by absorbing it gradually.
Yi Qianmo examined the small, flickering flame. He guessed the Fire Demon had absorbed most of its power. If he had come days later, the beast might have transformed into a drought spirit with Pure Spirit Fire’s traits—a terrifying prospect.
He knew he had to act swiftly.
Yi Qianmo sat cross-legged on the stone floor, channeling his spiritual power to wrap around the flame. As his energy enveloped it, the Pure Spirit Fire burned brighter, growing stronger. This was the first step to taming an Anomalous Fire—nourishing it with spiritual energy.
Unlike other flames, Pure Spirit Fire didn’t resist. It was like a blank slate, accepting his energy without conflict.
Hours passed as the flame pulsed with a brilliant white light, illuminating the cavern. Yi Qianmo’s face was drenched in sweat, his focus unbroken.
Finally, he created a formation using his spiritual power, capturing the flame and swallowing it in one swift motion.
Painful Refinement
The moment Yi Qianmo consumed the flame, his body erupted in searing pain. The Pure Spirit Fire coursed through his meridians, igniting every fiber of his being.
His brow furrowed, and he gritted his teeth, enduring the excruciating process. Beads of sweat poured down his face, but he didn’t falter. He guided the flame to his dantian, creating a small space to contain it and sealing it within a formation.
For now, he couldn’t refine the Pure Spirit Fire further. His cultivation at the Qi Refining Stage wasn’t sufficient to fully harness its power. This step alone had pushed him to his limits.
As Yi Qianmo finished sealing the flame, the cavern began to tremble violently. Lava flowed freely, threatening to engulf the space. He leaped to his feet, clutching the Five Element Refuge Bead in one hand, ready to activate it at a moment’s notice.
But just as he reached the cave entrance, a powerful presence blocked his path. A massive, flame-covered beast with a human-like face and blazing red eyes loomed before him.
The Fire Demon
“Damn it!” Yi Qianmo cursed.
The Fire Demon roared, filling the cave with a suffocating wave of heat. Yi Qianmo gripped Repel Evil, channeling what little spiritual power he had left. Half his energy was dedicated to containing the flame in his dantian, leaving him at a severe disadvantage.
The Fire Demon lunged, its fiery claws slashing through the air. Yi Qianmo activated the Five Element Refuge Bead, creating a glowing shield around him.
As the beast closed in, he dropped to the ground, sliding beneath its massive body. With a swift slash of Repel Evil, he tore through the demon’s abdomen, molten blood spilling onto the cave floor.
The Fire Demon howled in agony, its body trembling as the blood curse from Repel Evil took hold. The curse gnawed at its flesh, but the beast’s fiery nature resisted the sword’s dark energy.
A Desperate Bargain
The Fire Demon, though wounded, was relentless. Yi Qianmo sprinted toward the exit, but the beast was gaining on him.
“If you promise to let me out, I can help you!”
The voice of the evil god echoed from Repel Evil.
Yi Qianmo hesitated for a fraction of a second. He didn’t trust the evil god, but he had no other choice.
“I’ll release you, but on one condition—you must serve me!”
“Deal!” the evil god replied.
Yi Qianmo relinquished control of Repel Evil and threw the sword into the air. The blade floated, releasing a torrent of blood-red energy.
From the energy emerged a massive, ghostly beast that charged toward the Fire Demon.
The Fire Demon froze, its fiery eyes wide with terror. It tried to flee, but the ghostly beast was too fast. With a single bite, it devoured the Fire Demon, silencing its roars.
As the ghostly beast turned toward Yi Qianmo, its form shimmered and collapsed, returning to the shape of Repel Evil.
“How…?”
The evil god’s voice echoed from the sword. “How did you control Repel Evil? Why does this blade bend to your will?”
Yi Qianmo smirked. “That’s none of your concern.”
Sheathing the sword, he dashed out of the collapsing cave, the glow of Pure Spirit Fire still burning faintly within him.
