Chapter 31: The Pill Furnace That Fell From the Sky
After the man in black entered the cave, he headed straight to the Pill Room.
It didn’t take long for him to notice something amiss—several pills were missing. A cold light flickered in his sharp, black eyes beneath the mask.
With a sharp clang, the long sword at his waist left its sheath. A mix of red and black mist coiled around the blade, and the temperature in the cave dropped noticeably.
“Come out!”
His hoarse voice echoed in the silence, sword raised as his piercing gaze swept the room.
But no one responded.
He stood motionless for a long time, and though no figure emerged, he remained wary, advancing cautiously step by step.
Time passed—a full half a stick of incense burned—yet the cave remained empty. Finally, the man in black sheathed his sword.
Still, suspicion lingered in his mind. Stroking his chin in thought, he retraced his steps back to the Pill Room.
An hour later, the cave was illuminated by a dazzling light emanating from the Pill Room. The buzzing sound that accompanied it grew louder before eventually fading.
When the light dimmed and the man in black stepped out, his aura had completely transformed.
Without delay, he scoured the cave, systematically clearing out everything of value. Once satisfied, he drew his sword again and exited the cave.
Outside, in Roaring Bear Valley, the man in black stood still, sword at the ready, scanning the area for any sign of an ambush.
Minutes passed, yet no threat appeared.
Without wasting any more time, he left the valley in a flash.
Elsewhere on Green Dragon Mountain…
Two woodcutters emerged from the dense forest, their chatter lively.
“Have you heard? Something major happened in Green Cloud City. The Huang family and the Lei family were wiped out in a single night!”
“What? That’s impossible! Those families have been in Green Cloud City for centuries. Who would dare destroy them? Did they offend someone powerful?”
“Not quite. Apparently, the Lei and Huang families joined forces to eliminate a small clan—the Yi family. But who could have guessed? Overnight, the Yi family gained three innate masters, including two at the late innate stage!”
“Three innate masters? In one night? Did someone help them?”
As they spoke, a shadowy figure stepped out of the darkness, blocking their path.
The figure, cloaked in black and wearing a ghostly mask, revealed only a pair of cold, glowing eyes.
The woodcutters froze in terror. One collapsed to the ground; the other trembled so violently that he wet himself.
“You mentioned the Yi family in Green Cloud City,” the figure rasped. “What happened there?”
The leader of the woodcutters stammered out the full story, his voice quivering with fear.
“The Yu family? A son-in-law? Comparable to the sword techniques of immortals?”
The dark figure’s eyes gleamed with murderous intent. “No wonder the pills were gone but the cave was empty. If it were those righteous fools, they’d have set traps everywhere. Someone feels guilty, it seems!”
Before the woodcutters could respond, the figure vanished into the shadows, heading swiftly toward Green Cloud City.
Back in Green Cloud City, Su Muyu and Yi Qianmo conversed in his meeting room.
“As the Grand Princess of the Yan Kingdom, what are you doing here?” Yi Qianmo asked curiously.
Su Muyu had revealed her identity earlier—she was the younger sister of King Yan himself.
“I’m here searching for ancient ruins,” she replied. “According to old texts, Green Dragon Mountain was once infested with demonic beasts. Ancient cultivators came to drive them away.”
“You’re treasure hunting, aren’t you?” Yi Qianmo asked, frowning.
“Yes… but there’s more to it. What most people don’t know is that those cultivators weren’t just driving away beasts—they were here for a treasure. A bloody battle broke out over it, and many lost their lives. The demonic beasts were just caught in the crossfire.”
“What kind of treasure?” Yi Qianmo instinctively touched the hilt of the black sword at his waist.
“A Pill Furnace that fell from the sky,” Su Muyu said.
Yi Qianmo’s hand froze mid-motion. “Fell from the sky?”
“Yes,” Su Muyu explained. “The furnace landed on Green Dragon Mountain, creating a massive crater. The impact sparked fires that burned for days. Every ten years, people come to search for it. They say during this time, you can hear cries of sorrow from the spirits of fallen cultivators, and sometimes, bright flames light up the sky—thought to be the Pill Furnace itself.”
Yi Qianmo raised an eyebrow. “And no one’s found it?”
“Not yet. But this year is strange—there’s been no sound, no flames. Most of the cultivators who came here left months ago. If my master had emerged earlier, you might’ve met those celestial beings.”
Yi Qianmo breathed a sigh of relief. If those powerful cultivators were still lingering, he’d have had a hard time avoiding their attention.
His thoughts drifted to the formations in Roaring Bear Valley. Could the valley itself have been formed by the falling Pill Furnace?
He quickly dismissed the idea—it sounded absurd. Besides, Su Muyu’s tendency to speak in cryptic, mystical terms often made her hard to believe.
“You should return to the Yu family,” Yi Qianmo said. “If you linger here too long, that old fox Yu Changqing will grow suspicious.”
Su Muyu smiled, gave a graceful bow, and left the room.
Left alone, Yi Qianmo mulled over her words. A part of him wanted to explore Green Dragon Mountain, but he pushed the thought aside.
“First things first,” he muttered. “I need to break through to the Qi Refining Stage. Only then will I have the power to protect myself.”
He thought of Yu Youwei. She was already at the first level of Qi Refining, and if she returned, his current strength wouldn’t stand a chance against her.
As for the Sword Pill, it remained a last resort. Using it risked exposing its true nature—something even mortal beings couldn’t detect, but divine beings surely could.
“I must tread carefully,” Yi Qianmo resolved. “Until I’m stronger, I can’t afford unnecessary risks.”
