Chapter 25: The Ambition of a Wolf Cub
Silence.
When Lei Yuntian’s head rolled to the ground, the entire battlefield fell into a deafening stillness. Lei Yuntian, a master at the late innate stage, was one of the three greatest warriors in Green Cloud City. And yet, here he lay—defeated and decapitated by a rising star.
It was a scene too shocking to believe. If word spread, who could fathom such an outcome? But the evidence lay before their very eyes, undeniable and overwhelming.
“It’s over.”
The guards of the Lei family, along with their closest allies, were overcome with despair. Their surprise was matched only by their crushing sense of defeat.
“Kill!”
The traitorous guards, who had moments ago laid down their weapons, now picked them up again. With sudden, ruthless determination, they turned against the Lei and Huang families, attacking with unrestrained ferocity.
Dozens of guards fell where they stood, caught entirely off guard by this sudden betrayal. These turncoats hadn’t made their decision lightly—it was calculated. They had been prepared to side with whoever emerged victorious.
Yi Qianmo’s overwhelming victory over Lei Yuntian had cemented their choice.
With the battlefield now tilting heavily in the Yi family’s favor, the Huang family’s resistance faltered. Huang Xingchu, who had been evenly matched with Yi Danian, found himself completely outmatched when Yi Qianmo joined the fray.
Meanwhile, a shadow darted away from the battlefield. The figure was none other than Steward Yu, who had been observing the chaos from a safe distance.
At the Yu Family Estate.
Yu Changqing sat with a calm demeanor, sipping tea alongside a woman in white robes. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the outcome of the battle, neither seemed particularly anxious.
However, their composure faltered when Steward Yu arrived in a flurry of panic. His face was pale, drenched with cold sweat.
Yu Changqing raised an eyebrow. “What is it? Did something go wrong?”
“Reporting, my lord, something unexpected has occurred,” Steward Yu stammered, his voice trembling.
Yu Changqing remained calm, setting his teacup down. “The Lei family and the Huang family suffered heavy losses? That was to be expected. After all, that little beast killed Lei He. It’s no surprise that the Yi family might have put up more of a fight than anticipated.”
Steward Yu hesitated before replying. “Yes, the fight did not go as planned. But, my lord, there’s more to it than that…”
Yu Changqing frowned, sensing the tension in Steward Yu’s voice. “Out with it. What happened? Could it be that the Lei family and the Huang family… lost?”
Steward Yu nodded solemnly. “Yes, my lord. Lei Yuntian is dead.”
“What?!”
Yu Changqing shot to his feet, disbelief etched on his face. “Lei Yuntian? Dead? That’s impossible! I know his strength!”
Steward Yu shook his head grimly. “His strength was no match for Yi Qianmo.”
The room fell silent as the shocking revelation sank in.
“Yi Qianmo?” Yu Changqing repeated, his voice filled with disbelief. “You mean to tell me that a mere post-natal stage warrior defeated Lei Yuntian?”
Steward Yu exhaled sharply. “Yi Qianmo is no longer post-natal, my lord. He’s… he’s reached the late innate stage.”
The words struck like a thunderclap. Yu Changqing staggered back, collapsing into his chair.
“Impossible!”
Yu Changqing’s mind raced. “How could this be? Yi Qianmo has spent the last thirteen years as a prisoner in the dungeon, barely clinging to life. Even if his energy center wasn’t destroyed, how could he possibly achieve the late innate stage so quickly?”
Steward Yu continued, his voice heavy. “Not only has Yi Qianmo reached the late innate stage, but so has Yi Danian. And the Yi family has gained two additional innate experts—Yi Tianyu and Yi Tianyang.”
The weight of this revelation left Yu Changqing speechless.
After a long pause, he finally muttered, “The Yi family… they’ve risen. I should have eradicated that wolf cub when I had the chance. Now, it’s too late.”
Yu Changqing’s thoughts turned to the past thirteen years. He had always kept a watchful eye on Yi Qianmo, allowing the boy to suffer indignities under the guise of familial obligation. It was all to keep him subdued, to ensure he would never rise to power.
But now, that boy had grown into a force to be reckoned with—a wolf with ambitions that threatened to devour everything in its path.
“Sir, should we intervene now?” Steward Yu suggested hesitantly. “If we act quickly, we can still support the Lei and Huang families—”
“It’s too late,” the woman in white interrupted, her voice calm but firm.
Yu Changqing sighed. “She’s right. If we involve ourselves now, we risk exposing our involvement in past events. And besides…”
He looked to the woman in white, his expression heavy with doubt. “Even if we sent reinforcements, could they stop Yi Qianmo now?”
The woman in white smiled faintly. “With Youwei’s standing in the Xuanyuan Sect, does it matter? No matter how powerful the Yi family becomes, they’re still ants beneath the feet of true immortals.”
Yu Changqing nodded, though his unease lingered. “Still, we must take precautions. Steward Yu, send word to the Xuanyuan Sect. Request reinforcements. In the meantime, prepare a public declaration—announce to all of Green Cloud City that the Yi family is our close ally. Let everyone know that to offend the Yi family is to offend the Yu family.”
The woman in white chuckled softly. “You’re clever, I’ll give you that. With this move, you’ll shift public perception entirely. If Yi Qianmo seeks revenge, he’ll be seen as an ungrateful traitor.”
Yu Changqing’s lips curled into a cold smile. “The Yi family’s ambitions are dangerous. We must be vigilant against the rise of this wolf cub.”
But despite his outward confidence, a gnawing fear remained in his heart.
The Yi family’s power was no longer something he could ignore.
