Chapter 54: Title
Startled, Mu Huaiyun and Ye Qingshang broke apart.
Recognizing the visitor, Mu Huaiyun stammered, "F-Father."
Ye Qingshang’s flushed face looked thoroughly chastised. Mu Huaiyun shielded her behind himself, voice strained. "Father, why are you back so early?"
Mu Shezhi nearly laughed in anger. Away just over a month, he returned to this scene. Thank the heavens he’d come early—any later and his son might’ve been stolen! "Is that relevant? You, come with me."
As soon as the words were spoken, Mu Huaiyun remained still. Mu Shezhi glanced at their current predicament, feeling awkward and conflicted. Ultimately, he relented and told Ye Qingshang, "You should come along too."
"Oh…" Ye Qingshang stole a worried glance at Mu Huaiyun. Sect Leader Mu was clearly angry now. Would he kick her out in a fit of rage?
Mu Huaiyun squeezed her hand, silently assuring her: Don’t worry, I’ll handle everything.
Inside the room, Mu Shezhi stood with his back to them, his expression hidden, but his tone held a hint of irritation. "Yun’er, shouldn’t you explain what exactly is going on between you two?"
Mu Huaiyun looked at Ye Qingshang, the affection in his eyes warming her heart. "Just as you witnessed moments ago. She’s the one I love."
"The one you love?" Mu Shezhi scoffed coldly. "If I recall correctly, you haven’t known each other long. Do you truly understand her character? Are her temperament and background suited to yours? Making such a rash decision… Yun’er, you’re being foolish."
Mu Shezhi’s impression of Ye Qingshang had been poor since the Ten Sects Discussions, finding her behavior unconventional and disrespectful, even somewhat arrogant. Later, when she claimed the spiritual weapon Qianyu, it left him deeply regretful for days, cementing his low opinion. Were it not for her status as Ning Jiwei’s disciple, he wouldn’t have shown her any courtesy.
Moreover, she was here to whisk away his son!
Mu Huaiyun frowned at his father’s deep-seated prejudice. "Father, you worry too much. Qingshang is exceptional—if anything, I’m the one undeserving of her."
He paused, taking Ye Qingshang’s hand firmly in his. "I’ve resolved to marry her. In this life and beyond, we’ll never part. I ask for your blessing."
Each word rang with unwavering conviction, as if destined centuries past. Ye Qingshang studied his profile, a bittersweet ache swelling in her chest. Two lifetimes she’d known Mu Huaiyun, and now she finally heard this promise—each syllable worth more than gold.
Mu Shezhi turned abruptly, his gaze piercing. "‘Never part,’ you say? Yun’er, are you absolutely certain?"
"I am," Mu Huaiyun answered solemnly.
Mu Shezhi sighed heavily. He knew his son: once set on a path, nothing could sway him. And judging by his resolve, his love for Ye Qingshang seemed genuine.
But Ye Qingshang herself…
Mu Huaiyun shot a wary glance, disliking his father’s obvious disapproval.
Mu Shezhi felt a surge of frustration and looked away. Since Mu Huaiyun wouldn’t change his mind, forcing the issue was pointless. Besides, Qianyu remained within Ye Qingshang—marrying her meant the weapon stayed within the family.
This thought eased his temper. He cleared his throat. "Very well. If you insist, I won’t stand in your way."
Turning to Ye Qingshang, he adopted an elder’s air, his abrupt shift startling her. "Qingshang, where was your home before joining Frostbite Sect? Do you have any family?"
The sudden change left Ye Qingshang momentarily speechless. "…I’m from Fengyuan. There’s no one left in my family."
"Ah…" This complicated matters. With no parents or relatives, she’d likely been Ning Jiwei’s disciple since childhood. Any betrothal required her master’s approval.
Ning Jiwei had raised her. If he learned his only female disciple was being taken by Mu Huaiyun… Mu Shezhi imagined Ning Jiwei’s icy stare and shuddered. Would he storm Yunshan Sect in fury?
"Then it’s settled. Qingshang, take Yun’er to meet your master first. If Master Ning agrees, have him send word. I’ll visit personally to discuss the arrangements. Agreed?"
Ye Qingshang glanced at Mu Huaiyun’s joyful expression and smiled. "Agreed." Formalities mattered little—so long as both elders consented, the engagement could proceed.
After Mu Shezhi left, Mu Huaiyun exhaled, his eyes alight as he finally pulled her into an open embrace. "Qingshang, I can marry you now."
Ye Qingshang bit back a reminder about her master’s possible disapproval, simply murmuring, "Mm."
Yet her restraint faded on their flight back to Frostbite Sect. "Ah Yun," she ventured, "meeting my master… aren’t you nervous?"
"No," he replied, though his clenched hand behind his back betrayed him. Ye Qingshang grinned, reaching to interlace their fingers.
She gently pried open his grip, leaning close enough for her breath to brush his neck. "Still denying it? If you weren’t nervous, why grip so tightly? Hmm… Afraid my master might lose his temper and thrash you?"
Mu Huaiyun eyed their precarious position—soaring on his sword—and sighed. "Enough teasing. If Master Ning disapproves, I’ll accept the consequences. But would you truly abandon me to face him alone?"
"Ha…" Ye Qingshang’s low laugh vibrated against him. "Then I’ll consider hiding somewhere quiet. Wouldn’t want stray spiritual power harming bystanders while you two… negotiate."
"You…" Mu Huaiyun shook his head with a smile. The journey back to Frostbite Sect was indeed quite long; otherwise, with such playful banter, Ye Qingshang wouldn’t have had a chance to speak.
