Chapter 27: Title
"Be careful with that child."
This was what Ye Qingshang said after Mu Huaiyun picked up the child.
Spatial magic connected the two, allowing Ye Qingshang to speak through secret transmission. This method remained utterly concealed, undetectable even to Yin Huai.
“Why?”
“The child’s appearance is too coincidental. Though you tested him with Moon’s Shadow, how can you be certain he isn’t Yin Huai?”
“No demon would dare touch Moon’s Shadow.”
“Mu Huaiyun, you underestimate Yin Huai. He’s lived thousands of years—how could we match his power? Neither Moon’s Shadow nor Qianyu can suppress him.”
“How would you know this?”
Ye Qingshang sighed inwardly. She’d expected Mu Huaiyun’s skepticism. While demons living centuries existed, those surviving millennia were very rare. In her past life, neither she nor Mu Huaiyun had believed—until they were cornered and realized Yin Huai’s power too late.
“I… can’t explain. But trust me. If we fall into Yin Huai’s trap, regret will be pointless.”
Mu Huaiyun’s fingertips tightened. The child in his arms sensed it, looking up. “Brother,” he murmured, tiny hands circling Mu Huaiyun’s neck before repeating, “Brother.”
Mu Huaiyun patted his head. “Good boy.”
Through secret transmission, he asked Ye Qingshang, “Your plan?”
“Play along. Follow him.”
Ye Qingshang touched the child’s hand. He shyly buried his face in Mu Huaiyun’s chest, rubbing against him. A flicker of gloom passed through his innocent eyes—too fleeting for anyone to catch.
“Hungry? Sister has candy.” Ye Qingshang dangled the treat. The child’s eyes lit up instantly.
“Sister, Yin’er’s hungry. Yin’er wants candy.”
“Oh… so you’re Yin’er.” Ye Qingshang pulled the candy back slightly. “Really want it?”
The child’s gaze locked onto the sweet. He nodded hard. “Want it!”
“Then it’s yours.”
With candy in hand, Yin’er beamed. “Sister’s kind! Sister’s pretty!”
Qiao Zhu chuckled nearby. “Sister Ye, tricking even children now?”
Ye Qingshang didn’t answer, her gentle eyes fixed on Yin’er as he devoured the candy.
Guided by Yin’er, the group headed west. Light mist covered the village, and the earlier eerie wind put everyone on edge. They cast protective barriers, advancing cautiously.
After walking nearly the time an incense stick takes to burn, they reached a dead end—still no sign of Yin’er’s destination. Qiao Zhu asked, “Yin’er, how much farther to your daddy’s place?”
Yin’er nibbled his fingertip, counting on his fingers. “Not far… Yin’er remembers a huge locust tree. Daddy waits underneath.”
“Locust tree?” Qiao Zhu scanned the barren surroundings. “No locust trees here…”
“Did Yin’er remember wrong?”
It was unclear which part of Qiao Zhu’s words triggered Yin’er, but he pouted his little mouth, looking very wronged. Tears shimmered in his eyes, and big teardrops fell as he cried, "Yin’er didn’t remember wrong… Daddy was right under the tree. Daddy… Daddy wouldn’t abandon Yin’er… Wuu wuu, Yin’er wanted Daddy…"
"Alright, Yin’er, don’t cry. Let’s walk a bit further; we would definitely find your daddy." Ye Qingshang sent a splash of spiritual power from her fingertips, forming blue flames. Yin’er was captivated by the flames, staring wide-eyed and forgetting to cry.
Seizing the chance, Ye Qingshang transferred her spiritual power to Yin’er’s hand. The little boy, unaware of fear, stared curiously until the blue flames vanished into his body.
"Sister, what is this? It disappeared."
"It was a little spell; when you grow up, Yin’er can learn it."
"Alright, alright, Yin’er liked it."
The child clung to her, asking to see more, and Ye Qingshang happily showed it several times.
Until Qiao Zhu exclaimed, "This… there really was a honey locust tree!"
"But why didn’t we see it before?"
"Maybe it was hidden by the mist," Mu Huaiyun said.
Upon seeing the honey locust tree, Yin’er excitedly climbed down from Mu Huaiyun’s arms and ran to the tree, waving, "Right here! Daddy was right here! Big brother, big sister, come here!"
But under the tree, there was no one.
Ye Qingshang looked up and communicated with Mu Huaiyun, "Set up the formation."
Qianyu and Moon’s Shadow, one silver and one blue, intertwined their lights, forming a web-like pattern over Yin’er.
The little boy immediately started to wail.
Qiao Zhu asked, "Young master, what were you doing?"
Mu Huaiyun ignored the crying and said, "Yunshan Sect disciples, listen up! Form the deadly formation, eliminate the monsters!"
"This…"
The others were still in doubt.
Ye Qingshang shouted, "Yin Huai was right in front of you. Weren’t you going to act?!"
"Yin Huai…"
Although they did not understand why Ye Qingshang and Mu Huaiyun were so sure, the need to destroy Yin Huai drove their instincts, and over a hundred people formed the deadly formation together.
"Wuu wuu…" The child in the formation looked extremely pitiful, crying desperately, "Yin’er was hurt, Yin’er was very afraid, Daddy… Yin’er wanted Daddy… I’m not a monster…"
Ye Qingshang said, "Yin Huai, stop pretending! You had taken the revealing pill. Your spiritual power could be sensed from ten miles away."
"Was it… because of that candy?" The little boy wiped his tears.
Indeed, that candy was a revealing pill, and Ye Qingshang had activated it several times. For an ordinary monster, it might have shown its true form by then, but Yin Huai’s power was too strong; he hadn’t shown even a hint of spiritual power. Otherwise, the others wouldn’t have hesitated.
The revealing pill not only showed forms but also weakened monsters’ spiritual power. Yet, it was unclear how much it worked on Yin Huai. Ye Qingshang had no choice but to trick him, but Yin Huai’s words were like admitting his identity.
"You… you tricked me… I trusted you so much…" At that time, Yin Huai still looked like a child, his tone sounding strange.
Ye Qingshang replied with a laugh, "Oh? Trust? You brought us to your lair to catch us all at once. What trust was there to talk about?"
"That’s not it! I really just wanted to show you someone…" The spiritual power in the formation grew stronger, squeezing Yin Huai until he found it hard to breathe. He pressed his hand to his chest, his innocent eyes lifting a little.
The child’s look faded, revealing a woman’s beautiful shape, as deadly as poison, hard to look away from. She gazed back with misty eyes, her face perfectly made, something not seen for ages.
Tears glistened at the corners of her eyes, making her look utterly pitiful.
