Chapter 28: Reversal and Counter-Reversal
“Kid, you’re too careless. While the Twin Blade Shadower is the best at scouting and lurking, don’t forget that the Bow Shadower is the ultimate counter-scout. I’m your nemesis.” The Bow Shadower drew his bow again, this time channeling his Yuan Qi and aiming directly at Zhang Wenyu.
“My arrow has a special powder attached to it. When I hit you, the arrow left a mark that only I can see. You’re now my prey.” With that, the Bow Shadower loosed an arrow, sending a powerful gust of wind toward Zhang Wenyu. Meanwhile, the others on his team took their stances, ready to join the attack and take Zhang Wenyu down in one coordinated strike.
“Don’t forget I’m here too!” Xi Mo shouted as he rushed to Zhang Wenyu’s side, condensing his Yuan Qi on his shield to block the incoming arrow.
At the same time, Qin Bao Yi waved her staff, and flames erupted beneath the Sword and Shield Warrior’s feet, enveloping him in fire. It turned out that before Zhang Wenyu went into stealth, he had lured the Sword and Shield Warrior into a flame trap set the previous night. However, before Zhang Wenyu could coordinate with Qin Bao Yi’s attack, he was hit by several arrows.
Xi Mo grabbed Zhang Wenyu and quickly retreated, bringing him back to Qiao Zi, who could heal his wounds.
Qin Bao Yi, meanwhile, unleashed another pillar of fire that struck the Sword and Shield Warrior. The Water Elemental Erudite had no choice but to summon a water pillar to extinguish the flames, which significantly weakened Mu Xiaofeng’s bindings.
Mu Xiaofeng gathered Yuan Qi in his feet, then with a powerful shock, shattered the ice that had been holding him down and charged toward the Sword and Shield Warrior with his heavy sword.
The Sword and Shield Warrior, severely injured from the previous attacks, was in no condition to withstand Mu Xiaofeng’s onslaught. The Sacrificial Wine Priest, who had been holding back, finally stepped in. If he didn’t, the Sword and Shield Warrior would be finished.
The Sacrificial Wine Priest extended his hand toward the Sword and Shield Warrior, releasing a golden light that healed his wounds at an astonishing speed.
“In the end, this guy’s secret is out—he’s a Holy Healing Sacrifice Brewmaster. No wonder he hasn’t been helping his teammates before now; this rapid healing drains too much Yuan Qi,” Mu Xiaofeng thought to himself.
Mu Xiaofeng gathered his strength for a strike, one that even Xi Mo would struggle to withstand, let alone the Sword and Shield Warrior.
Although the Sword and Shield Warrior used both hands to block the strike, the force left his arms numb, and he wouldn’t be able to defend against Mu Xiaofeng’s next attack.
Mu Xiaofeng knew that this guy didn’t have the “King” card, so defeating him would be a waste of effort. He signaled Qin Bao Yi to target the Double Shield Warrior instead. Qin Bao Yi nodded, understanding Mu Xiaofeng’s plan.
Mu Xiaofeng raised his sword, gathering Yuan Qi for another powerful strike aimed at the Sword and Shield Warrior. His opponents didn’t just stand by; arrows and icicles flew toward Mu Xiaofeng. But the Double Shield Warrior’s inaction confirmed Mu Xiaofeng’s suspicion.
Mu Xiaofeng had no intention of attacking the Sword and Shield Warrior. He was just baiting out the others’ attacks. He swiftly dodged back and then charged toward the Double Shield Warrior.
Caught off guard, the Double Shield Warrior had no choice but to block Mu Xiaofeng’s sword, and it was too late for the others to intervene.
Both fighters had stored up a massive amount of Yuan Qi, and when their weapons clashed, the impact sent the surrounding Water Elementalists and the Sacrificial Wine Priest flying.
Mu Xiaofeng’s strike was directed at the Double Shield Warrior, who sidestepped the blow. However, he unknowingly stepped onto Qin Bao Yi’s Flame Trap. Qin Bao Yi swung her staff again, triggering the trap just as a fireball descended from the sky, aimed directly at the Double Shield Warrior.
Fortunately for him, the Water Elemental Erudite summoned another water pillar to extinguish the flames, but the Double Shield Warrior was already disoriented by the relentless attacks and didn’t know where to focus his defense.
Mu Xiaofeng noticed the shift in the Double Shield Warrior’s mindset. At this moment, the Sword and Shield Warrior had recovered and leaped toward Mu Xiaofeng.
With his left arm weakened, Mu Xiaofeng didn’t have much choice. He struck at the Double Shield Warrior, who barely managed to block it.
Suddenly, the Bow Shadower in the trees realized the danger and cried out in alarm as a black figure, Zhang Wenyu, rushed toward the Double Shield Warrior at high speed.
Zhang Wenyu had recovered from his injuries thanks to Qiao Zi and seized the opportunity to attack the Double Shield Warrior from behind. The Double Shield Warrior felt a cold wind behind him.
Before he could turn around, Zhang Wenyu’s daggers pierced through his armor and into his back, his pained scream echoing through the forest.
Mu Xiaofeng and his team were on the brink of victory. The Sacred Healing Priest realized that the “King” was indeed on the Double Shield Warrior. If the Double Shield Warrior fell, their team would lose.
The Sacred Healing Sacrifice Brewmaster mustered all his Yuan Qi, and a dazzling light enveloped the Double Shield Warrior, forcing Mu Xiaofeng and Zhang Wenyu to step back.
Although the Double Shield Warrior’s armor was shattered, his wounds healed instantly, and he appeared as if nothing had happened. But the effort drained the Sacrificial Wine Priest of all his Yuan Qi, leaving him unable to continue fighting.
Mu Xiaofeng’s left arm was still injured, and Zhang Wenyu was too close. The Double Shield Warrior looked at the two of them with a smug grin before raising his shields and clashing them together, unleashing a Shield Roar.
This move was powerful enough to temporarily paralyze nearby enemies but also took a toll on the user. It was a desperate move, harming both the enemy and oneself.
The Shield Roar hit Mu Xiaofeng and Zhang Wenyu, who were only a few steps away, leaving them numb and unable to move.
Crisis struck again as everyone targeted Zhang Wenyu, believing he held the “King” card. An icicle was intercepted by Qin Bao Yi’s fireball, which exploded in the air, creating a brief downpour.
Xi Mo, seeing Mu Xiaofeng in danger, sent his shield flying again, stunning the Sword and Shield Warrior.
At that moment, a shield and another fully powered arrow flew toward Zhang Wenyu, who still couldn’t move. Mu Xiaofeng shouted internally, “Move, hurry up and move!”
Mu Xiaofeng suddenly felt a chill throughout his body as the mark on his chest began to burn. Perhaps his desperation for power reactivated the curse, a chill he hadn’t felt in a long time. However, he noticed his fingers move slightly—he could finally move again.
Without hesitation, Mu Xiaofeng rushed to Zhang Wenyu’s side, pushing him out of the way and raising his sword to block the attacking shield. However, an arrow pierced his abdomen, and two types of blood, red and blue, flowed from his body.
Blue blood was a trait of the demon race, yet it was flowing from Mu Xiaofeng. But at that moment, his chest emitted a blinding red light. Mu Xiaofeng felt the coldness in his body dissipate, replaced by a warm sensation, and the blue blood vanished.
The sight was unlike anything the others had seen before; they stood frozen in shock, and the rain stopped.
Mu Xiaofeng seized the moment, slashing at the Double Shield Warrior with a horizontal strike before rushing to Zhang Wenyu’s side. “Let’s get Xi Mo’s shield back and pull back for now,” he said.
One of them grabbed a shield and threw it back to Xi Mo, who caught it easily. Mu Xiaofeng then shouted, “Release all the flame traps and cover our retreat!”
Qin Bao Yi waved her staff, but they had forgotten about the recent downpour—the ground was too wet for the traps to be effective. The flames flickered out, and the enemy’s attack was imminent once again.
