Chapter 27 – Constant Attack
As dawn broke, the sky was still dimly lit. Ximo stood feeling weary, having exhausted a lot of his Yuan Qi the previous day.
“If you’re tired, go rest. I’m almost fully recovered, and I don’t need as much sleep,” Zhang Wenyu said, slowly opening his eyes. Despite having slept only briefly, he showed no signs of fatigue.
Ximo noticed Zhang Wenyu was already awake and marveled at his remarkable endurance.
Suddenly, a sharp arrow whizzed by, and Zhang Wenyu deftly dodged it with a sidestep. Realizing they were under attack again, Ximo quickly jumped down from the tree and shouted to wake Mu Xiaofeng and the others.
Zhang Wenyu swiftly leapt to another tree, carefully scanning the area. Although the attackers were well hidden, Zhang Wenyu recognized the Bow Shadower who had led the previous assault on them.
Nearby, four others stood: a Double Shield Warrior, a Sword and Shield Warrior, an Erudite, and a Sacrificial Wine Priest. It was clear that the Bow Shadower had brought his entire team. Given the timing of their attack, it seemed they had little rest, just like Mu Xiaofeng’s group.
Mu Xiaofeng, Qiao Zi, and Qin Bao Yi quickly grabbed their weapons upon hearing Ximo’s shout. As they prepared to fight, Zhang Wenyu returned and briefed them on the situation. The five of them quickly regrouped.
“You seem alert, managing to gather so quickly. But you burned through a lot of Yuan Qi yesterday, and you haven’t fully recovered yet, have you?” The Heavy Sword Warrior emerged from the woods, followed by the Dual Shield Warrior, the Erudite, and the Sacrificial Brewmaster. The Bow Shadower, however, remained unseen.
The Bow Shadower, unlike the Dual Sword Shadower or Deadly Shadower, specialized in long-range support, using the terrain to stay hidden while assisting from afar.
Mu Xiaofeng signaled Zhang Wenyu to keep an eye on the Bow Shadower. Gripping his heavy sword tightly, Mu Xiaofeng focused on the battle ahead.
The Sword and Shield Warrior charged first, but Mu Xiaofeng met him head-on with his heavy sword.
From a distance, Qin Bao Yi raised her staff, preparing a spell to support Mu Xiaofeng. However, a sharp arrow aimed at her was intercepted by Ximo, interrupting her casting and startling her.
While Qin Bao Yi’s support faltered, their enemies’ support arrived in the form of icicles raining down on Mu Xiaofeng. Unfazed, Mu Xiaofeng blocked the Sword and Shield Warrior’s attack with his heavy sword, then used the force to propel himself backward, narrowly avoiding the icy assault.
“A Water Elemental Erudite,” Qin Bao Yi muttered, recognizing the enemy’s spell. She knew this would be a tough match, but Zhang Wenyu reassured her, “Have you ever seen a drop of water extinguish a fire? Besides, they don’t know your attributes yet.”
With their attributes at a disadvantage, they’d have to rely on Yuan Qi to compensate. The Bow Shadower’s arrow had revealed his position, providing a strategic advantage.
Mu Xiaofeng recalled the previous day’s battle and deduced that the Bow Shadower likely wasn’t the team’s “King.” Therefore, the “King” was probably among the three behind the Sword and Shield Warrior.
“Xi Mo, protect Qin Bao Yi while she casts her spell. Qin Bao Yi and Zhang Wenyu, cover me,” Mu Xiaofeng ordered.
With a powerful step, Mu Xiaofeng charged forward, gathering Yuan Qi to unleash a Yuan Qi Chop at the Sword and Shield Warrior, who braced himself with his shield.
Mu Xiaofeng attacked again, forcing the Sword and Shield Warrior to block, his hands trembling from the impact. Just then, a swirling water column struck Mu Xiaofeng, sending him flying. He quickly got back up, only mildly injured.
Sensing an opportunity, Qin Bao Yi unleashed a pillar of fire at the Sword and Shield Warrior, while Zhang Wenyu charged at the Erudite, hoping to distract him.
The Sword and Shield Warrior, weakened by Qin Bao Yi’s attack, struggled to defend. Meanwhile, Zhang Wenyu’s assault was thwarted by the Double Shield Warrior, who blocked with minimal effort. A Demon Retreating Arrow from the woods grazed Zhang Wenyu’s arm, pushing him back slightly.
Realizing he was at a disadvantage, Zhang Wenyu retreated. However, the encounter helped Mu Xiaofeng confirm his suspicion that the Double Shield Warrior was the enemy’s “King.”
Mu Xiaofeng and Zhang Wenyu then staged a deliberate argument, with Mu Xiaofeng scolding Zhang Wenyu for rushing ahead. Their act was meant to confuse the enemy, and Zhang Wenyu played along, stepping back slightly.
Their ruse worked, causing the enemy to hesitate. Suddenly, three arrows flew from the woods toward Zhang Wenyu. “What? More attackers?” Mu Xiaofeng was initially alarmed, thinking they were surrounded again. But then he realized the arrows came from the same direction, likely a trick by the Bow Shadower using Multiple Shots.
The Sword and Shield Warrior charged at Zhang Wenyu, but Mu Xiaofeng intercepted him. Zhang Wenyu attempted to dodge, but was blocked by icicles that fell from the sky, trapping him. Unable to avoid the attack in time, Ximo couldn’t help.
An arrow struck Zhang Wenyu’s arm, and blood began to flow. Qin Bao Yi cried out in panic, but Zhang Wenyu noticed something odd: only one arrow had hit him; the other two were illusions.
Zhang Wenyu sneered as he pulled out the arrow, “Looks like we overestimated that Bow Shadower. He’s just using a shadow technique to make it look like multiple arrows. There’s only one real arrow, the others are phantoms.”
He then leapt away from the danger zone as Qiao Zi applied medicine to stop the bleeding and heal his wound.
Meanwhile, the Sword and Shield Warrior continued battling Mu Xiaofeng. Suddenly, the Sword and Shield Warrior smirked confidently, saying, “You’re too obvious. We’ll take your team’s ‘King’.”
He broke away from Mu Xiaofeng and rushed towards Zhang Wenyu. Mu Xiaofeng tried to follow, but an ice patch formed beneath his feet, stopping him.
Just as Ximo was about to intervene, Zhang Wenyu signaled him to stay back. Zhang Wenyu then cloaked himself in Yuan Qi, gradually disappearing from sight. This was the Twin Blade Shadower’s unique skill, Stealth, which allowed him to blend with his surroundings and move freely.
Stealth was different from other concealment techniques. It allowed movement even after attacking, though it consumed a lot of Yuan Qi. This made it superior to the Bow Shadower’s Concealment, the Deadly Shadower’s Camouflage, and other forms of invisibility.
The Sword and Shield Warrior, suddenly losing sight of his target, realized he was in a vulnerable position, likely surrounded. Three more arrows shot from the woods, seemingly aimed to cover the Sword and Shield Warrior’s retreat.
Unexpectedly, the Sword and Shield Warrior sidestepped, allowing the arrows to pass by and hit an unseen object. The arrows had been multiple shots, and they struck Zhang Wenyu, who had reappeared next to the Sword and Shield Warrior, hoping to launch a sneak attack but getting caught instead.
