Chapter 281
"Next is Star Song Castle, what do you think… about this one?" She pointed to this area of land, which looks very similar to Selonkelin. It is a slightly lower ground between two mountains, surrounded by farmland, and there is a wide "front yard" in front. "If you want to plant flowers, this would be a good choice. The view of the farmland is also nice here, and there are rarely any disturbances."
"Although it’s nice and suitable in every aspect. But I feel… it’s just like the area near Sotralo earlier, nothing particularly special."
"Let’s leave it, after all, it’s better than considering other plots that we don’t even want to consider."
The two of them closely looked through this picture book together, but it was clearly different from when they were in the library years ago. Sylas could sense that Xerath was deliberately controlling the distance between them, carefully avoiding any physical contact.
Alright.
None of the other plots behind interested her, but the last map aroused some interest in her.
This piece of land is in a very remote valley, so remote that even the "transportation cost for materials is doubled" is specifically mentioned, but the land itself is exceptionally cheap.
They even said together, "We can buy a Titus."
But the reason that Sylas was interested was not because of this, but because this piece of land was located west of Star Song Castle, near the edge of the desert in the mountains (wizards like to build towers in the mountains).
Sometimes when she was at school, she would wonder what it would be like where the wind veins end? And this piece of land seemed to be at the place where the wind veins end. The "wind" that paid homage to the Elemental King would carry her messages here and disperse into the wind veins leading to various parts of the world.
Xerath’s silvery-gray eyes locked onto her, and the slightly wrinkled nose and slightly curved eyes conveyed a very, very gentle emotion. The archmage asked softly, "Do you like it here? I think it suits you very well."
Distant mountains, dense forests, a lake, the scent of flowers and chirping birds, she thought to herself, as a pure white unicorn wandered within them, all the flowers bloomed eagerly upon her arrival, forming a path under her feet.
Just a bit far away.
She took the card out of the clip and set it aside, then closed the book in her hand.
"You have um…," to make sure, she counted on her fingers, "four options, take your pick." Elemental beasts.
Without a doubt, it would be a good choice within the range of Withered Leaf City, Sylas thought. Maybe when Xerath goes out on the street, she can randomly come across her. But what should she do after the encounter? Xerath doesn’t mind if I leave, so why should I imagine myself to be that important?
During her hesitation, she couldn’t help but look up at Xerath. The old mage was staring at her, with a layer of ambiguous teasing in her eyes. What is she thinking? Sylas wondered. Does she think I’m a little ghost that can’t leave without her?
I am. Her eyes slid to Xerath’s lips and suddenly remembered the kiss that Xerath didn’t want to talk about. In an instant, she understood what that expression on Xerath’s face meant.
Examining.
What is she verifying? Does she feel like she’s getting closer to the correct answer? Choosing this spot she occasionally sees seems like a very good choice, but it’s too deliberate, as if she’s trying too hard to make it obvious right away.
Sylas threw this card aside, so the second one also felt dull to her, not to mention the third one.
Only this one is left, farthest away from Xerath, but it has a beautiful view, it’s quiet, and she can listen to the sound of the wind.
She sighed heavily and somewhat resignedly said, "Here."
Xerath shrugged indifferently, called the waiter, and the waiter brought a pile of documents. Before Sylas signed, she reiterated, "Even though this piece of land is cheap, the cost of future additions will be high. You must think carefully if your budget is enough for the subsequent expenses."
Xerath answered for her, "It’s okay, go ahead and sign. I will buy it for you no matter how much it costs."
The waiter’s expression was slightly strange, but Sylas lowered her head to write and didn’t notice. After finishing, she officially became a mage with her own tower and could no longer stay in Aimekotes.
Xerath watched as she held the pen to write, but her expression was flat and seemed more like a formality than a genuine "congratulations", even the heartfelt smile that she could feel at the graduation ceremony was gone.
After completing the procedures, Xerath and Sylas walked out of the auction house together. Sylas didn’t know where to go for a moment, and Xerath stood still for a while, then suddenly turned her head and said, "Sylas, from now on, it’s up to you to handle the rest. Technically, I shouldn’t interfere. Go home, you need to pack."
She handed all the large envelopes in her hand to Sylas. "It’s time to learn how to keep these things safe. These are deeds and some proof documents. They represent the substantial connection between you and this world."
Sylas touched the papers and said, "They seem easily destroyable."
"Yes, it’s absurd. That’s why there are two to three copies of everything stored in the archives. If you lose what you have, the guild can issue a new proof based on what’s preserved in the archives."
Sylas knew nothing about the forms.
"I know you don’t understand. Just keep them safe, but definitely don’t put them in the library." In the old mage’s mind, the library had become a dangerous place. "Luckily, I keep these things in my own room."
Sylas confidently suspected that the appearance of the library would make her laugh, but then she thought of the kiss that happened in the library and couldn’t laugh.
"We still have time to go back and have a meal. Today is worth celebrating. What do you want to eat?"
Sylas said casually, "Cake, anyone?"
Xerath chuckled and said, "Yes, eating sweets brings joy. Let’s go have some cake."
Unfortunately, the weather in Withered Leaf City was terrible. When Sylas looked out of the window, she thought it had gotten dark without her noticing.
"So dark?"
A staff member nearby chimed in, "There was a heavy storm last night, and it has been raining all day. She was the female mage who escaped to Withered Leaf City with Sylas during the attack by Lich. She looked at the small badge on Sylas’s collar for a while and smiled, saying, "Congratulations on your graduation."
"Thank you," Sylas politely smiled back, but her mind was elsewhere. She now felt that she had fully learned Xerath’s mask-like politeness. She turned to look at Xerath, while the archmage stared blankly out the window, sighed sadly, and then asked her, "Are you still going? If you don’t mind the trouble, we can take the Earth Child over."
Sylas nodded absentmindedly. Since there was a way, why did Xerath sigh?
Xerath had already walked towards the door, and with the golden air tracks she traced with her fingertips, she opened a portal in the void. The rumbling Earth Child was waiting outside, the water curtain above catching the rainwater, constantly creating ripples. The area of the water curtain kept expanding, and its thickness continued to increase. Some water droplets fell from the edge of the water curtain, splashing on the ground behind her. The splashes slowly soaked the Earth Child and the separated "feet." The ground was very muddy, and when wind, sand, and rain mixed, it would be like this. Tree leaves, broken branches, and even peach flower petals were scattered everywhere on the ground, showing how strong the wind was last night.
When the old mage turned to look at her, the smile reappeared on his face. "Even on a rainy day, you should be happy. What should I give you for your graduation? Do you feel that something is missing in your tower?"
Without a doubt, Sylas said in her heart, and then smiled, "I think I need to prepare for a while to know what I am missing."
"That’s right, I will deposit money into your account as the starting capital for the New Tower, but after that, you have to learn to take the responsibility for profits and losses… But if you really have no money, you can write to me."
Sylas couldn’t figure out Xerath’s mood along the way. Perhaps Xerath just disliked rainy days. After all, there were no seasons or weather changes in the tower. In the desert, there were only two states, "storm" and "sunny day". Before going to Star Song Castle, she didn’t even quite understand the concept of "rain" or "snow".
But this time, her graduation was far less grand than those meaningful days before. Xerath didn’t announce to the whole city that her disciple had graduated, nor did she gather all the family members to celebrate. She just sat here calmly eating cake. If there was any difference from normal, it was that she ordered two servings, one large caramel pudding and one sweet creamy strawberry cake.
She ate very seriously, and occasionally spoke as if she were seriously thinking about what Sylas was missing.
"You can buy furniture at Star Song Castle. If you don’t know what to buy, think about your needs. Some unnecessary things can be left for later, but a bed, a sofa, and a writing desk are necessary."
"You probably don’t need to fold your library for now, so I will give you another space crystal to prevent you from needing to expand your laboratory."
"I think my laboratory should be temporarily placed together with the library."
"You can also take the books you like at home. You know, I have read most of the books, so it doesn’t matter if I give them to you."
Sylas nodded, but couldn’t think of anything to pick for now.
Xerath looked down, stirring the milk tea in her cup. The quick swirling created a very deep whirlpool in the cup, almost spilling over the edges. Just as Sylas thought she was lost in her thoughts, Xerath suddenly looked up and asked, "Are you full? Do you want to go to another shop and have something else?"
Sylas shook her head.
"Then let’s go home." She left behind half a cup of milk tea and most of the cake, leaving the money on the table. She stood up and walked out, not saying a word along the way.
From Sylas’s defense to graduation, everything was in a hurry. It was so rushed that even after Xerath said "take care" and disappeared into the portal, Sylas still felt like it was temporary. She thought she would still be able to have dinner with Xerath face to face.
It wasn’t until nightfall that she realized the special pocket where she kept the teleportation stone was empty.
