Chapter 242
She then ran outside. Star Song Castle in this month was really cold. She breathed on her hands to warm them up a bit. She had to pass through a few not-so-easily accessible indoors before finally reaching the library.
She had a few favorite spots in the library, but unexpectedly ran into Caroline halfway. Caroline asked in surprise, "Why are you here again? Did you argue with the teacher again?"
Unfortunately, Caroline couldn’t connect Elemental Archmage Xerath and Sylas’s teacher together. In her impression, the "teacher" was still the young woman who was excessively beautiful. She realized after saying it out loud that it might be disrespectful to the archmage.
Sylas frowned and denied, "No. How are you guys doing?"
"Oh, it’s so amazing! Something really amazing happened, and I was planning to tell you in a letter. Swis did something strange. He wants to become an inspector and is now cramming the classes he missed in the past two years. But it’s too difficult for him. I’m afraid he’ll have to delay his graduation. What’s even more unbelievable is that he’s taking a scroll class. I’m really worried about his calligraphy skills."
"Did he act without permission again and only come to his sister for help when he found it too difficult halfway through?"
"Yes, you know him too well." Caroline shook her head helplessly and sighed deeply. "I simply came out a sandglass earlier, but have to bear so much pressure that someone my age shouldn’t bear."
Sylas laughed twice. "If you need extra classes during summer vacation, just come to me."
"Is there a fee?"
"No, of course not. I’m not short of money."
"But that won’t do, Swis won’t cherish it if it’s free. You should charge a little more. If you don’t want the money, give it to me."
Sylas laughed again, and the siblings were still trying their best to harm each other.
They quickly walked to a table, where there were books and a small bottle of ink with a pen inserted. There was nobody around the table. Caroline rushed over and took the pen angrily, muttering, "Damn it! How many times have I told him!"
"What’s wrong?"
Caroline closed the ink bottle, dried the water on the pen, and repeatedly absorbed it with a soft cloth. She said with resentment, "I told him he wouldn’t cherish it! Look at what he did to my pen and ink!"
Sylas, of course, recognized the bottle of silver ink. The bottle was made of thick, dark brown glass to prevent light. The open mouth was not appropriate because the water would evaporate. However, brief contact with air would not cause the silver ink to deteriorate.
"Don’t be so angry…"
"How many times have I told him!" Caroline whispered, looking very angry. "Don’t leave the pen in the ink and go out to play!"
"Why?"
Caroline opened her eyes wide and asked, "Why? Because the pen might get clogged, right? I know you always follow the rules to take care of stationary, so you’ve never thought about why we should take out the pen immediately when we don’t use it, right?"
"No, why?"
"Because, because the pen tip will get clogged if it stays in the ink for too long, my little fairy."
"Oh…"
"Once I catch him, I’ll teach him a lesson. Will you stay for dinner tonight?"
Sylas thought for a moment and hesitantly said, "Maybe not… I want to go home."
"Oh, is there a curfew now?"
Sylas smiled lightly and said, "Sort of."
I think… I suddenly want to see her. She added in her mind.
At that moment, a sound of footsteps approached. "Sylas!" A voice spoke in a low tone that Swis couldn’t contain his excitement. But as his sister turned her head, he sensed that a storm was about to come. Before he could run, Caroline appeared beside her with a smirk. "Hmph, you dare to come back? Very well, I’ll make sure you won’t forget this."
Even Sylas complained silently in her mind, in sync with Swis. "When did you learn that?!"
Caroline dragged Swis outside of the library. The crowd, who had been disturbed by the noise earlier, returned to their books, minding their own business. Sylas chuckled softly for a moment, then left the library, the school, and walked into the Mage Guild.
Soon enough, she returned to Withered Leaf City. However, at the entrance of the teleportation hall, she hesitated whether to go left or right. Aimekotes’ Portal was the furthest inside, unlike the other Portals that occasionally shimmered with starlight. It stood alone in the deepest shadows, seeming out of place.
It wasn’t time for a meal yet. Sylas pondered that Xerath probably hadn’t calmed down yet, and perhaps it wasn’t wise to show up so early. Just the thought of the impending cold war made her heart ache.
She chose to go left, exiting the large doors of the Mage Guild and turning left again towards the road leading to the library. Along the way, she mused about what she would do to return if Xerath really decided to exile her from Aimekotes.
Sylas hadn’t prepared to study the Mountain Giant yet, but she decided to go to the library now and find out how to summon one.
In the afternoon, there weren’t many people in the city. The sky was a leaden grey, and a beast-like intuition made her sense something unusual. As she walked into a shadowy area, the bricks behind her suddenly crumbled, revealing a person holding two daggers, poised to strike her throat.
Sylas quickly stepped forward, turning around to pull her contracted water lord, Leunen, out from a rift in space. Leunen once again stood in front of his master, transforming into an ice wall to block the threatening strike.
This isn’t over yet. Leunen spit out water from his stomach and sprayed it in the face of the person who approached. Sylas raised her hand, and a small tornado whisked the black-clad assassin away, temporarily rendering him unable to move. Sylas asked, "Who are you really?!"
"My master, I’m afraid he’s in trouble."
Sylas suspiciously dismissed the tornado, and the assassin’s body fell to the ground. His face turned pale, foam coming out of his mouth. She widened her eyes and looked at Leunen. Leunen said, "I’m afraid he committed suicide by poisoning himself. You need to hurry home."
She turned her head and ran towards the Mage Guild. The guild hall was as quiet as usual. A staff member said to her, "Please mind your manners and don’t run in the guild hall!"
Sylas paid no attention and ran to the depths of the hall. She reached her hand into the center of the farewell stones, which held the teleportation runestone. However, unlike before, there was no image of the other side of the door, not even the runes around the teleportation stone were lit up.
This was very strange. Sylas tried again, but the Portal still didn’t respond.
Stop playing this kind of joke, she thought to herself. Then she quickly called a staff member, "Aimekotes’ Portal, suddenly it’s not lit up? No response?"
This mage was the person who had chased after her earlier, telling her not to run around. Now, he walked over and said, "Are you sure you used the teleportation runestone correctly?"
"Of course, I’ve gone in and out so many times."
"You hold my hand and give me the runestone." Sylas then held his hand and handed over the runestone to him.
The staff followed the previous steps and tried once, but there was still no response, and even the runes on the teleportation array didn’t light up.
"How could this happen?"
Sylas took back the runestone and asked, "What exactly could cause this phenomenon?"
The staff member replied, "Unless one side of the Portal is destroyed and there’s a significant pressure difference, the activation energy cannot ‘pierce’ the space…"
"But Aimekotes has no one else…" Sylas murmured, not expecting her fears to come true so quickly. Aimekotes has no one else, and the only one who could destroy the Portal is Xerath herself.
This motive is obvious, it’s to drive her away and make it impossible for her to return to Aimekotes.
She had a deep feeling of being abandoned. Tears welled up in an instant and fell down with a soft thud.
"Don’t, don’t, don’t cry! How about this! I’ll write a letter to inquire, okay?"
"No, no, it’s not necessary. You don’t understand, she doesn’t want me anymore…" She shook her head gently, tears streaming down her face.
But she didn’t know what was wrong with that sentence, it caused the staff member to show a startled expression. His eyes widened, as if they were about to pop out of their sockets, his mouth opened wide, taking a deep breath as if he wanted to shout. His hand lifted, as if about to point at something behind her.
Sylas saw her reflection in his wide eyes, and the distorted background next to it, twisted by the curvature of the sphere.
There was someone behind her, but that couldn’t be possible, nobody was around just now.
Sylas instinctively turned around, and the Water Lord once again stood in front of her. But this time, the impact seemed too strong. Leunen also took a step back, bumping into Sylas.
Sylas stumbled backward and shouted, "Ice Beam! Frost Blade!" Leunen’s body also transformed accordingly. The part that blocked the assassin’s dagger froze further into ice, while the other separated part became a sharp blade. With the girl’s limited strength, it sliced into the assassin’s arm.
The Frost Blade quickly froze the entire arm. The Water Lord forcefully threw him away, and the stress from the blade’s strike concentrated at the point of contact. The completely frozen arm snapped off and was tossed aside by the Water Lord.
The staff member looked at her in astonishment, "Who is this person?"
"I don’t know! How could someone attack me in the Mage Guild?" Her tear marks were still wet, but the delicate expression from before had disappeared. It was replaced by a sharp, wild look.
"Me, me!" he suddenly shouted loudly. Several guards ran over after hearing the news. Sylas briefly explained the situation and then pulled the staff member aside, saying, "I must go to Star Song Castle, right now, immediately. I have to return to Aimekotes!"
"But… the charging of the Portal to Star Song Castle hasn’t finished yet…"
Sylas grabbed his wrist and said, "Double payment, urgent teleportation, hm? I heard that you can instantly teleport by purchasing an Energy Storage Crystal for an extra fee. I have money, take me with you!"
"But…" The staff member wasn’t very tall, being intimidated by the power of the elements and under the pressure of Leunen, he was dragged by Sylas into the teleportation array hall.
"You should wait here to be questioned by the Oversight Committee. It’s you who’s being threatened now!"
