Chapter 241
Hyectra walked ahead, protecting its fragile owner, Xerath. Xerath called out softly, "Titus," and suddenly a wolf howl came from downstairs. The sounds of fighting, which had already disappeared, started again. The electric current was buzzing, followed by the wolf’s mournful howl.
The archmage quickened their pace and shouted, "Titus, come up!"
Little paws made a tapping sound on the ground as Aimekotes’ famous pet appeared at the end of the stairs. Behind it was a fierce sand wolf, leaping towards Titus to bite. Xerath shouted, "Duck!"
With a "poof," Titus’s huge body suddenly shrank. The wolf’s jaws closed without catching anything, making a loud and crisp sound. The small footstool hurriedly scurried behind Hyectra, while the brave water lord shot a water arrow, catching the sand wolf off guard, hitting it in the eye.
Without hesitation, Xerath reached out her hands. Roaring flames ignited from the closed passage. The tongues of fire instantly devoured the still trembling sand wolf. After the flames receded, the burnt smell of fur filled the air, but the flattering wind blew away the annoying stench. The Earth Child, who appeared out of nowhere, threw the wolf’s corpse out.
The sand wolves that were growling and howling behind suddenly fell silent. Titus regained its courage and transformed once again into a majestic sand wolf. It howled and charged out.
Titus looked fiercely intimidating. All the sand wolves couldn’t help but retreat when it appeared. Only one wolf among them turned around and ran behind its companions. With its teeth bared, Titus forced back the five or six wolves that were blocking the stairs.
It even opened up a wide path for the archmage! Titus felt incredibly proud, standing tall with its head held high.
Xerath finally saw the terrible state of her living room.
There were dead sand wolves everywhere, the sofa was scratched, the beautiful wooden cabinet was broken in half, and the whole room smelled of burning, possibly from Titus knocking over a light bulb.
The entrance was blocked by bodies, but her door seemed to be broken, with claw marks all over it, and it was knocked off its hinges.
She gently touched Titus’s furry head and praised, "Good boy, all your training paid off."
The other wolves in the room all instinctively tucked their tails between their legs. Canines are creatures with strong wild instincts, they can sniff out who the strongest predator in the room is, they were not worried about Titus, but were rather staring fiercely at this weak human woman.
The wolf closest to the door let out a low howl, it seemed to have companions outside, looking through the narrow and tall window, it could still see their wandering tracks.
The pile of bodies at the door seemed to move, and then sink down, a body was being dragged. The wolf pack outside seemed to be tearing at the blockade at the door, planning to rush in. Xerath stood on the stairs, the bravest sand wolf rushed towards her, but just as it reached the heavy wooden stairs, about to step onto the stone surface, the stone suddenly collapsed.
It fell unexpectedly below, causing the wolf pack to panic. The archmage waved his hand in the air, casually drawing, and the Elemental Realm was torn apart by a powerful spell. Water gushed out, floating weightlessly in the air, slowly transforming into ice cones.
The wolf pack wouldn’t sit back and wait for death, this elite team planned to bypass the abyss and attack the owner of the tower, but the leader was the first to be pierced by an ice cone and fell through the gap of the broken bridge.
The remaining ones didn’t give up and suddenly rushed over together. The archmage skillfully opened a rift in the void, and several Earth Children emerged from it, blocking the jumping route perfectly. They collided with the rocks and fell to the ground, making a heavy thud sound.
There were a couple of wolves that might have broken their legs, but three of them still bravely charged forward. The injured wolves refused to back down and angrily bit the Earth Children. However, they only ended up damaging their own teeth and got counterattacked by the enraged stone children. Just with their fists, they managed to knock out two or three of the wolves.
The pile of corpses at the entrance became looser. The wolves outside, disregarding that these were their companions’ bodies, dragged them outside while dragging their injured legs. Xerath didn’t want the dirty wolf blood to pollute her mansion. The stones that fell down earlier, under her command, awakened and climbed up the stairs, transforming back into stone steps.
The archmage descended the stairs, and the mighty stone children began the cleanup. They held the wolf carcasses and threw them outside after the pile blocking the door collapsed completely.
One of the sand wolves, as tall as a person, attempted to charge in. After knocking down one of the stone people, it was immediately blown out by the wind. The second one collided with a corpse on the ground, rolled and hid within the wolf pack. The Earth Children quickly broke through the entrance and engaged in a battle with the sand wolf. These not-so-agile little beings used their bodies to collide with the sand wolf. Surprisingly, some of them managed to push the sand wolf away.
But this didn’t hinder the archmage from asserting its dominance. Witnessing her garden being trampled and ruined, Xerath became extremely angry. The flattering winds confirmed carefully that no mercy was needed for these intruders, then they cheered and scattered around, gradually forming sharp edges. Invisible and exceptionally dangerous wind blades whistled out, causing blood to splatter. After being absorbed by the sand, it turned dark.
"’Expel the invaders!’" the king commanded with authority. The spinning wind scythes harvested lives everywhere. The sand wolves were dismembered in the air by the wind blades, with organs and severed limbs scattered all over. The wolf pack, however, didn’t collapse despite this gruesome scene and continued to charge forward. But there were no live creatures in the front row anymore. Even if the wolves in the back jumped, they would only land in the pile of corpses. When they tried to charge forward again, they accidentally slipped because they stepped on their companion’s body.
The Earth Children threw their bodies out, followed by their comrades throwing their corpses. They assembled into a stone person in the distance. A single Earth Child could handle a sand wolf just by smashing, let alone these wolves that were beaten to death collaboratively. Hyectra held the Endless Water Realm spray gun and could protect its master just by using the fountain. The golden light in Xerath’s beautiful hands turned more winds into dangerous blades and sent them out, like the reaper walking among the wolf pack, harvesting lives.
The massacre led by the archmage eventually became very dull and boring. However, even when there were only three or two wolves left, they still bravely charged forward. Xerath had tried more than once to catch one for interrogation by Titus, but failed due to the sand wolves’ fierce resistance.
She looked around and saw no living creatures. Soon these bodies would turn into dry corpses and be buried, possibly becoming fertilizer for plants. She silently prayed that these resilient flesh plants would not die from the footsteps of unexpected visitors, but she also wondered deeply why these two unrelated creatures had come to her territory.
She turned around and went back inside the house, where there were no bodies left due to the hard work of the Earth Children, only a mess.
"Luckily, Sylas isn’t home," she muttered, while Hyectra directed these distant relatives to block the door, preventing sand from entering and ensuring that there were no wolves that hadn’t died completely.
"But where is she?"
The only heir that the Elemental King was concerned about was now sulking in the activity room. The weather was a bit cold, and she had run out wearing a dress. It wasn’t until she walked past the long slope in front of Star Song Castle’s entrance that she felt the wind was too cold. "Breezes swirling" could make her body a bit warmer, but it couldn’t dispel the coldness in her heart. Mrs. Slote lent her a thick work jacket because of this.
She draped the jacket over her shoulders, sipped hot tea, and Shirley obediently curled up on her lap. She listened to her complaining, saying, "She never used to be like this, but now she’s even threatening me. I know she doesn’t need me, I know she has never needed me, I’m just her expendable pet."
When she mentioned the word "pet," Shirley’s two unusually large compound eyes moved together. Sylas couldn’t help but pick up Shirley and whisper, "I envy you so much."
"Oh," Mrs. Slote pushed up her glasses, "I think that statement of yours is very biased." She probably had never seen Xerath look so proud.
"As a teacher, it is particularly intolerable to see one’s star pupil waste time. A responsible teacher naturally believes that guiding students to develop good study habits is their non-transferable duty. She didn’t do anything wrong, just maybe her approach was a bit off."
"I don’t believe it. I think you don’t understand her, that’s why she said that. She never wanted to keep me in the first place. She raised me out of a sense of responsibility and now she wants me to leave. Her life has always been peaceful, I was just too noisy…"
Slote shrugged noncommittally, "Oh, maybe. But I think you’re quite lucky. No teacher would tolerate their student researching something that is destined to have no results."
"How can you say it’s destined to have no results!"
"How can something that can’t be published be called a result?" she said ironically. "Didn’t she say she’s willing to wait for you to finish your witchcraft essay before moving on to something else? She even offered to introduce an expert to you. She didn’t hinder you, she has enough patience to wait for you to do what you like before supervising you to complete the necessary tasks that you don’t like."
Sylas pouted and remained silent. Her initial reaction was that Xerath couldn’t possibly treat her so well. Then she thought, "Yes, she treats me this way out of her responsibility as a teacher."
Miss Slote said, "You see, she’s not being mean to you, she’s just…"
Sylas took a deep breath, stood up, and handed Shirley to her. "I know, it’s because what I want is not these things. It’s all my fault."
