Chapter 209
Swis said confusedly, "Didn’t Sylas ask you to save me? She told you to grab me!"
"Oh no! Of course not! We left the little fairy and your sister with the bad people! What have we done!"
Swis looked extremely scared and pushed Luna, saying, "But do we have to go back?! Hurry, let’s go!"
"No, no…"
Just as they were speaking, there was a loud explosion and a roaring noise from behind them. The blast even reached them, so Swis grabbed Luna’s hand and forcefully pulled her forward. "We have to go! Sylas might survive, but we definitely won’t!"
Luna was completely lost and scared. She knew going back was dangerous, but she had no idea what kind of technology could make Leunen explode, and why they were being attacked in peaceful Star Song Castle was a complete mystery to her. So, Swis grabbed her and they ran together.
Not many wizards were good at running, and after running for a while, the two young people were panting heavily. Luna stopped and gasped for air, saying, "I… I can’t run anymore…"
"Don’t stop! We’ll die!" Swis pulled at her sleeve and firmly grabbed her hand, trying to lift her up.
Luna waved her hand, but she was suddenly terrified by the shadow that appeared behind Swis. She grabbed his reaching hand and used a very basic spatial teleportation spell called "Swap," moving them to a different location in space.
After completing the spatial teleportation, Luna turned back to look, and she saw a bright light tearing apart the exact spot where they had just been standing.
He is a thief, just disappeared.
"What should we do, Swis?"
"Blizzard!" Swis immediately raised his arm and recited a long incantation after casting the spell. "Blizzard" is a type of spell that requires guidance, and only by continuously chanting will a mixture of ice and water fall. The invisible thief was revealed, soaked all over. Removing his mask, he kept wiping his face and moved towards the edge of the blizzard with difficulty.
"Let’s go! Let’s go!" Luna urged him softly. "There must be other people! Hurry!"
She was right. Swis said fearfully, "Someone above, someone above." Then, a strange noise came from the roof and someone appeared, a huge black figure holding a double-handed axe, completely enveloping the two of them.
Luna screamed and pulled Swis away. She was terrified. The bad guy who had only existed in her father’s stories suddenly appeared in front of her, and she had no idea what to do. Luckily, "switching places" had become almost instinctual for her, thus saving her life once again.
However, using "switching places" outside the safe distance violated the rules and her head started to ache. Just as she was staring blankly, she heard Swis whisper, "’Icy Splash’!"
He threw with force, and a mixture of ice and water burst on the giant’s face as it stood up. He staggered back two steps, one hand covering his face and the other swinging the axe aimlessly.
Luna suddenly realized and pulled Swis into an alley, whispering, "He can’t see us! Let’s go, let’s go! It’ll be safe if we go back to school!"
"Didn’t you just say that you wanted to save Sylas?" Swis looked at her.
"It would be great if we could just not cause any trouble for her, let’s go!" The two of them held hands and ran forward without looking back. Behind them, flames were rising and there was the sound of the wind element spell’s destruction. Hearing this sound, Luna felt a little relieved, it meant that the conflict was still ongoing – usually only when wind element spells collide head-on would there be such noise – and Sylas was still alive.
Compared to Caroline and Sylas, who were good at studying and had practical combat training, the apprentice pharmacist and the apprentice space mage here were clearly unsuited for battle. The best course of action was of course to rush back to the school and get reinforcements. Damn it, why did the security patrol seem to be dead at a time like this? There was such a commotion in the city!
But just as they were passing through an alley, Swis suddenly pulled her back. Two people rushed out from the mouth of the alley, seeing that they couldn’t pass, they simply came towards them. Luna and Swis both started chanting "Fiery Burst" almost at the same time, and two fireballs of similar size flew towards them. However, the incoming people didn’t dodge or avoid them, the fireballs hit their faces, but they seemed unaffected.
"They’re wearing protective gear!" Although she hadn’t taken any classes, Luna had at least seen Sylas duel before. She grabbed Swis who had frozen in place and accelerated forward. In an instant, they had moved behind the two enemies.
"Swis! Fire Wall!"
Swis quickly cast "Blazing Inferno," blocking off the path behind them with a wall of fire. Swis asked, "When can I let go?"
"Hold on a bit… Ah!" The sudden voice startled Luna. The background noise had always been present, but it seemed a bit abrupt in this place far from the central battlefield. She instinctively turned her head to find the source of the sound, and Swis suddenly screamed.
"What’s wrong?!"
Swis pulled her towards the direction of the fire wall and said, "There are people lying in wait ahead. I heard them. We can’t go that way."
"Then let’s take a different route. Are you crazy?"
"No, it won’t work. There are archers using arrows to show us their position. Otherwise, how do you think these people managed to get ahead of us? We can’t escape… unless we take out the archers or meet up with Sylas."
Luna turned her head and looked down the slope. Flashes of light still appeared from time to time, and the snowstorm occasionally formed. It must be Sylas and Caroline.
They weren’t moving very quickly, probably attracting most of the enemies’ attention, or maybe because…
The archers indicated their position.
"There’s no time to hesitate. Let’s go back and take out the archers!" Before he could finish speaking, a feather arrow shot to a position just above their heads, faintly glowing red, and then fell on a nearby rooftop.
Luna took a deep breath and cast "teleportation" when Swis lowered the fire wall. In the momentary confusion of the two thieves who had just tried to chase them, the two of them appeared behind them. Swis whistled, and as the two thieves turned around, they were both splattered with a mixture of ice and water, covering their faces.
"Well done, Swis!" he complimented himself. He walked down a path that descended from the edge of a mountain, climbed onto the roofs of other people’s houses along the wall, and hid on a nearby terrace, showing only his eyes. He said to Luna, who had followed, "Do you see him over there?"
He pointed at the lookout tower in this area. It was supposed to be the lookout point for the security patrol team, standing there can monitor this area very well. If anything unusual happens, it will alert the local security officer. Now their lookout point has been occupied, no wonder there has been no movement for so long.
The arrows shooting towards them will light up after a while, still indicating their disappearing position. Swis whispered softly, "It seems like they lost track of us."
"Let’s take it slow," she whispered, cautiously peeking and pointing at the nearby rooftop terrace, "Let’s go to that one."
"Um… how long is your safety spell interval?"
"Thirty grains for the first time, one hundred and twenty for the second. If the interval for the first spell is too short, then the second one should be…"
"Alright, alright, I got it. Let’s go slowly." Swis rolled his eyes. Spatial magic is known for its complex safety spell interval time algorithm, probably only spatial mages themselves can figure it out.
While the two were talking, an arrow silently flashed twice above their heads. Luna exclaimed, "We’ve been spotted!" She pulled Swis in a hurry to perform a "switch", and Swis stumbled due to the hasty spell-casting. Luna wordlessly pulled him up and immediately performed another "switch".
"But what about your time…"
"Forget about that!" Luna hid under the eaves of the attic, trying to curl up as much as possible. The usually overly serious and boring black apprentice robe protected the two in the darkness. She put on her hood and made Swis wear one too.
"After two ‘swaps’, we shouldn’t be discovered, right?" An arrow flew just above them, pointing to the spot where they disappeared moments ago.
"Are you okay?" Swis asked with concern.
"Maybe." Luna seemed less scared now and in better condition than Swis. She took a breath and listened to the distant explosions. She whispered, "Let’s go take out the archers. Can we really do it? Do you have a plan?"
"You can speak a little quieter. I can hear you."
"When did your ears become so good?"
Swis adjusted the pendant hanging from his ear, a gift from Virgil. "Of course, it’s because of this thing."
"What is it?"
"It’s an ear-whisper pendant. I’ll explain it to you later. I’ll go distract the archers, and you banish them into the void. Sound good?"
Luna’s eyes widened suddenly. "You want me to kill someone? No, I can’t… I’m too scared… How could I possibly kill someone?"
"Then you go distract his attention, and I’ll go kill him."
"
"How can we possibly defeat an archer! What if they have protective gear? Your magical strength is just not enough."
"Well, I have another plan. You rush into the crowd and tell Sylas to come up and kill the archer."
"Do we really have to kill someone?"
"Then how do we make it out alive?"
"Maybe they just want to capture us for ransom. My dad will figure something out."
Swis grabbed her shoulders, stared into her eyes, and said, "No, they’re here to kill us. If they only wanted to kidnap us, they wouldn’t need the power to explode Leunen to hurt me, right?"
"But… but… wait, why would they want to kill us? Did you get into trouble?"
"Is it time to blame me now? Either live, or die!"
"Wait, did your earrings help you hear something you shouldn’t have, leading us into this situation, hmm?"
