Chapter 200
Sylas was slightly stunned for a moment, pushed her glasses up and said, "How come I don’t know about this elective class?"
Caroline said, "Luna’s brother told us about it, it’s on the last page of the course catalog."
Luna said, "Would you be interested in ballroom dancing instead of this? It’s an optional class worth two credits. Lazy apprentices can skip it if they want, but there are certain occasions where dancing is necessary, like the farewell dance after graduation."
Sylas stood up defiantly and said, "Why not?"
She was still taller than Luna and for some reason seemed even more upright and graceful recently. This advantage was even more apparent when she stood up. Luna looked up and stomped her foot, saying, "You’ll leave us without dance partners!"
Sylas laughed and said, "If I don’t have a partner, I’ll be yours." She slyly handed the pen to Luna and filled in a slot on the course selection form.
The form was much emptier than the first time she had selected courses. There were empty slots everywhere, but everyone had reason to believe she would waste all her time in front of this experiment table.
This elective class took place on Monday evenings. Everyone went to attend the class, except for a lonely demon outside the window, flapping its wings. It paused for a moment after seeing the darkness.
Spider Shirley quietly lay on its web in front of the window. There were a few silken cocoons hanging from the web, containing partially digested reserves.
Kuowa tapped on the window, startling Shirley. The green Hunting Mark on its forehead suddenly appeared. Kuowa’s sweet voice tempted it, saying, "Come here, little one. Turn around."
Shirley seemed to resist this feeling, but it still crawled uncontrollably to the other side of the spider web. Its eight eyes couldn’t help but look at Kuowa. The sweet demon smiled and gazed at it with slightly narrowed purple eyes, saying, "Open the window."
Shirley extended her long front legs, opened the window, and Kuowa reached out her hand towards Shirley. A burning green mark suddenly appeared, emitting an evil aura.
"Let me see… see where this ‘owned wild beast’ is…" She leaned on the window frame and extended her hands, extracting a fragment of soul from Shirley’s head. However, this fragment had a strong attraction, so Kuowa had to break it apart again. The golden dust resembled a magical glow, but it was just the activated state of the soul fragment caused by demon spells.
"This will be enough… sleep tight, little one." Kuowa smiled and snapped her fingers, causing Shirley to suddenly fall upside down on the ground.
This was the secret she hadn’t told Sylas yet. As a beginner in demon spells, Kuowa, a Grand Lord of her level, had a way to use residual soul fragments to track her down.
She had prepared for this during the holidays. If Sylas came home, she could secretly follow her and find out where her "nest" was and who her "master" was. Even if she lived in a remote place, demons could still track her. After all, demons rarely had anything to do and didn’t miss out on any opportunities for fun, and the resilient body that even lava couldn’t destroy made long-distance travel easier.
If it weren’t for laziness, demons would have conquered the world long ago.
Despite being imprisoned by the demon lord, these dusty soul fragments stubbornly flew towards their master. Kuowa hummed a song and followed the soul fragments, only to discover that Sylas was in the winter hall.
The winter hall was the school’s auditorium. It looked majestic from the outside, but inside, it only had one level. The spacious hall had many temporary seats. When the administrator chanted a spell, the stones on the ground would fly up and form seats, turning it into a performance hall. However, by chanting another spell, these temporary seats would return to the ground, transforming it into a grand dance hall.
At one end of the hall was a stage, naturally followed by several rehearsal rooms. The elective classes took place in one of these rehearsal rooms. After finding it, Kuowa was quite surprised. She had assumed that Sylas was just a slightly more beautiful nerd and had never thought that a girl like her would be interested in taking dance classes.
The golden piece of the soul shattered and lost its magic from the demon spells. It gradually became dim and transparent, only visible in the eyes of the demons, revealing its dark nature. The fragment silently merged into Sylas’s body.
"Sylas, you stepped on me again!"
"I-I’m sorry…"
"Go dance with Caroline, it’s easier to start with the girl’s steps. Besides, how would you dance with the teacher if you learned the boy’s steps?"
"The teacher hasn’t danced in a long time, and dancing the girl’s steps is easier for everyone." She replied casually. However, Luna and Caroline exchanged a glance and switched dance partners when they passed each other.
Swis sighed with relief and said, "That’s great. She was just forcing me to dance the girl’s steps, or else I would have to report her to the older sister!" The tyrant sister finally left.
"Is it because of her that you’re learning to dance?" Caroline held her hand. "Left, right, spin."
"Huh? Um? Well… not really… At the farewell party, aren’t we supposed to dance? I can’t just go and eat without knowing anything, right?"
"Yeah, do you have enough credits for your classes?"
"Of course it’s enough. I’ll graduate this year."
"After graduating, I can go home and stay with my teacher." Caroline said this sentence casually, while Sylas felt embarrassed and shy. However, it seemed that over the years, they had developed a certain understanding. They talked about their teacher as if they were discussing an ordinary friend. Sylas didn’t pay attention to whether there was any hidden meaning in the twins’ words. Instead, she tried to respond in a casual tone, attempting to make the whole thing appear normal and ordinary.
Now it’s like this. In her heart, Sylas actually had no idea if Caroline thought the same way as Luna did.
"Um… yeah, and after finishing thesis, I’ll become an official wizard."
"Do you have any plans? After graduation? Will you continue to help in the teacher’s tower?"
"She can conduct research independently even when I’m not around, so I think she doesn’t need to hire any assistants."
"Don’t be discouraged. If she wants you to stay, she will suddenly need to hire an assistant, just watch."
"Watch? Watch what?"
Caroline encouraged her with a smile and said, "Once you graduate, she will hire you and keep you here… Um–actually, I don’t understand why she insists on having you graduate?" In fact, Caroline had always believed that the teacher was raising Sylas like a "secret weapon." She didn’t need to go to school at all. Caroline had never asked the teacher about the motivation for sending Sylas to school. In her view, the mysterious "teacher" could fully educate Sylas. She was already several levels above others when she first started school. Why did she have to stay in school with a bunch of immature kids?
"She said… She said she can only become a real wizard after graduation, to have ‘true freedom’, and there are things at school that she can’t teach me."
"For example?"
"Making friends," Sylas said honestly.
Caroline couldn’t argue with this. If Sylas didn’t come to school, they wouldn’t meet. She would forever be a phantom in her and her brother’s minds, a ghost who only wrote letters at a set time.
"So… what do you plan to do after graduation?"
Sylas said uncertainly, "I don’t know, maybe… I have a few plans in mind, and they should be carried out gradually. And you?"
"You’re asking me? I still have a long way to go before graduation! I have to apply to study in the tower, then be an apprentice for a few years, and after graduation, save money to buy a tower and research things I’m interested in."
"For example?"
Caroline frowned, "Probably the same as everyone else, take on tasks from the guild to earn some money? But let’s not talk about it, it’s still a long way off. Look! You don’t have to step on my toes. Oh! I can’t praise you!"
After Caroline reminded her, she immediately lost her concentration and her footsteps became all mixed up.
The next day, when the succubus came to visit, the table in the middle of the activity room had already been moved away. Mrs. Slote was playing an old upright piano next to it, while the children were practicing their dance steps in the middle.
She knocked on the window, and the music stopped. Everyone spread out and took a rest. Sylas unbuttoned the third button of her collar, revealing a white camisole underneath, seemingly not caring much.
"Oh my, dancing are we?" the succubus sneaked in through the crack of the window, sitting boldly on the window ledge, which Mrs. Slote had wiped spotlessly clean.
"Yes," Swis gasped, saying, "Sister, I’ll go first!" and opened the door to run out.
Caroline sighed and also sat on a Leunen brand water cushion, taking a sip of water and complaining, "I wonder what he’s busy with every day. Let’s take turns later, who should I practice with?"
Kuowa smiled and said, "No need to take turns, I’ll accompany you guys."
All three of them turned their heads, "You? You can too? Aren’t you…?" Luna put her hand on top of her head, revealing two horns growing out from behind.
Kuowa said, "Of course I can, I’m very knowledgeable about all the exciting and glamorous things that humans enjoy. Do you want to know how I met Eilan?"
"How did it happen?"
"Ha–" the succubus fell onto Leunen and said, "Back when Prince Borliboli was full of ambition and wanted to conquer the human world, I would often blend in at the palace balls, listening to people’s conversations, gathering information, and eavesdropping. It was quite fascinating, much more exciting than soaking in lava baths."
Everyone shuddered at the thought, even creatures that couldn’t be dissolved by lava.
"I could easily bewitch a man or a woman without much effort. But after a while, it became quite dull. Then one night, just as I finished a conversation with a man, suddenly, someone grabbed hold of my wrist."
"Is it Eilan?" Luna asked excitedly.
"Of course," Kuowa blinked her eyes, filled with joyful memories.
