Chapter 194
"No, I want my own!" she insisted. Luna, the little princess, wasn’t short of money. Eilan was a recurring character in her father’s bedtime stories, as if she had read many spin-off stories about Eilan before. However, this book was a precious sequel.
While Fenika looked for money, she suddenly leaned in close to Luna and whispered, "I wrote some stories about Sylas and the Archmage. Interested?"
"Yes! Definitely!"
Jane rummaged through her drawer and pulled out an old clip, as if all professional writers had one just like it. After Luna took it and found a corner to sit with Jane, they hugged each other tightly while using each other’s shirts to wipe away tears.
Fenika walked over with two cups and said with a smile, "What’s wrong?"
Luna wiped her tears and said, "Love is a hand that lifts and lets go."
Fenika giggled and said, "I’m really pleased with this part."
Jane also complained, "You made us cry! But… it looks so real, I’m starting to wonder if you witnessed everything. Archmage is just like that in my heart, have you met her?"
Fenika shook her head, "I’ve heard a lot of people talk about her. She’s my senior, more than ten levels above me. As for Sylas, she comes often and I observe her too."
"That’s great, please finish writing soon, I will definitely come to buy it!"
The two girls skipped away, Sylas and the twins had almost finalized their trip to Mount Borliboli.
"It will take several days for a round trip, what should we do? Sylas definitely doesn’t want to miss class time." Caroline said.
"We can go during the holidays, how about the Revealing Day holiday? It’s the longest one." Swis suggested.
Sylas said, "Wait until Revealing Day, your curiosity will most likely be completely exhausted, or else you’ll skip class."
"You even said something like skipping class!" Swis stepped back abruptly, "You must have some other motive, right?"
Sylas said in astonishment, "Isn’t this the best method? Oh, I have an idea. If we’re not afraid of danger, we can create a Portal in the activity room and take another one to the volcanic area. That way, we can come back directly and save time on the journey."
Swis pondered and said, "We’re going to such a far place with such a big stone circle? Nice idea, but I disagree."
"Then we have no choice but to rent a Pegasus," Caroline said, "Although it’s expensive, it has its advantages."
Renting a Pegasus would probably cost the price of a Titus cub, but the Pegasus can avoid the impending danger. It’s definitely worth it.
"Then let’s rent a Pegasus."
"No no no, it’s too expensive…"
"Let me pay, I still have…" Every time Sylas came to school, she would probably bring a bag of gold bars. Her tuition was covered by a scholarship, and this bag of gold bars was all hers.
The brother and sister held her hand trying to touch the money, and Swis sadly said, "Okay, let’s rent Pegasus."
This way, we can leave on the day before a weekend that coincides with a holiday. Everyone spent the week packing various things, but most of them were rejected in the end.
"Pegasus doesn’t like heavy things."
At that moment, Mrs. Slote appeared very precious. When Swis was thinking hard about which teacher’s name to use to borrow the measuring instrument, the friendly janitor revealed that she was actually a real magician.
"Later, I burned my eyes in an experiment and couldn’t continue my research, but I didn’t want to leave school."
"But didn’t you burn your eyes? It doesn’t seem like you can’t see!" Swis protested.
Mrs. Slote mischievously said, "I have glasses!" She also shook her own reading glasses up and down.
"What kind of glasses let blind people see things?"
Mrs. Slote said, "Don’t underestimate my reading glasses. These peculiar little things give people ghostly vision. It’s just that what I see is a little different from what normal people see. And I’m not completely blind; my residual vision combines with the ghostly vision, so my eyesight is not really affected!"
"But, but if you see it, you can do some work that magicians do, right?"
"Oh ha ha ha ha ha ha… It’s been too long since the first pair of glasses, there’s nothing left for me to study. Besides, dare you say being a janitor is not as interesting as being a magician?" She looked at Swis with a sideways glance, and Swis didn’tice that her eyes didn’t seem to focus, but were just facing in his direction.
In the end, they only brought two tents, an extra set of clothes, some dry food, and gave the rest of the weight to various measuring instruments – altimeter, level, ruler, geomagnetic measurement gauge, and so on.
That’s how the Pegasus were still not very happy.
The Pegasus ran swiftly, and Swis had a sudden idea of making the Pegasus spread its wings and fly. It ended up getting hit by the wings and falling to the ground. Sylas demonstrated to everyone that if you want the Pegasus to take off, you must lie down or lean on its back.
They arrived at Borliboli Town just as the sun was setting. This was the largest town at the foot of Borliboli Mountain and also the closest to the volcano. After this, it was completely barren volcanic territory. The dark mountain range had patches of bald traces, which were said to be the remains of trees burned by magma.
The inn landlady kindly gave each of them a small silver mirror. "With this, the devil’s tricks won’t work. Make sure to carry it with you at all times, don’t forget."
Luna and Sylas still shared a room, and she nervously said, "Can I sleep with you tonight?"
"Why? Are you that scared?"
Luna said, "The space here is distorted a lot, you don’t understand this feeling…"
Sylas turned around and asked, "Distorted space?"
"Can’t you feel it?"
Sylas shook her head, "Although it feels a bit strange, I don’t feel the space being distorted."
"Why?? You’re so talented, why can’t you feel it?"
Sylas said, "The teacher once said that if you’re too sensitive to one element, you’ll be less sensitive to the other basic elements."
"But space is not a basic element."
"Anyway, it will affect the senses."
"Oh… okay… just stay with me and sleep!"
"Okay, okay…" The bed here is quite big, and the two of them put the beds together. Luna curled up and said, "Can we sleep without turning off the lights?"
"No, it’s not possible, right?" The lighting is achieved by using Sunstone as a basis for casting the Illumination Spell. Even Xerath cannot maintain the Illumination Spell while sleeping (only elemental spells can be maintained), and of course, Sylas can’t either.
"Sob… I’m scared. Can I keep a candle lit?"
"Of course, you can… But how long can a small candle burn?"
"I don’t care, I’m lighting it." Luna ignited the candle with a match and then curled up in the bed, still covered in the blanket, with her back to Sylas.
Sylas looked at her nervous expression and couldn’t help but laugh and cry, "You’re overreacting. How about facing my side if you’re scared?"
"How can I do that? Then my back will be exposed, right?!" She held the small silver mirror given by the innkeeper in her hands and mumbled, "Whether it works or not, it’s better than nothing…"
Sylas sighed. She didn’t expect Princess Luna to be so delicate. "Then I’ll go to sleep." She wasn’t afraid of anything, covering her eyes with her sleeve to block the light, and soon fell asleep.
The dreams seemed uneasy. She seemed to have gone back to when she was very young. There was always a strange and unknown dark figure chasing her, and someone always searching for her, wanting to capture her and sell her for a good price. She disregarded the danger and ran into the desert, following the guidance of the wind, as if this was the only way to find redemption.
She didn’t know how long she had been running when she saw a tall tower in the dark night. There was a serious and cold woman at the bottom of the tower. Without saying a word, she led her into the tower, as if it was her fault for not going home. She settled down for a while and lived and studied with the cold King of Elements. Time flew by, as if it was meant to be this way, until she started to fantasize about impossible things while looking at the archmage’s back.
Suddenly, time slowed down.
"Sylas."
Sylas suddenly woke up and saw the starlight shining through the narrow window. But she couldn’t see the silver sand outside the window clearly. She wanted to look carefully, but the archmage standing at the door called her name again, "Sylas."
"Teacher?"
Xerath was naturally there. This was her tower. Every night, she would take Sylas to the bedroom and then leave.
But all of this surprised Sylas. She had never returned before, even after those ambiguous and long wanderings. But she obviously returned, just as Sylas had hoped, and she pushed open the door.
The archmage’s light golden hair looked silver-white in the dim moonlight, and her gray eyes hid beneath a faint shadow. She took the first step forward and let out a deep sigh.
Her queen’s gaze was profound, seemingly filled with both sorrow and sadness.
"Teacher, what’s wrong?"
Xerath shook her head, closed the door, and walked to her bedside, murmuring, "My… my little creature…"
Sylas’s breath paused, her heartbeat suddenly quickened. Fading flames burned in her eyes, tempting her to answer, "Yes… I am… yours."
Xerath bent down, giving her a long-awaited hug. She almost cried, choking out, "Teacher… Xerath… I am… I am…"
"I won’t allow– I won’t allow… anyone to share my private property," the archmage declared sovereignly in a gentle tone Sylas had never heard before. Then, he kissed her forehead, her nose bridge, and even her nose tip. Sylas felt so happy she could fly.
But there was one imperfection: even after breaking this distance, she still couldn’t smell the warm scent she had yearned for day and night. She couldn’t help but greedily breathe, chasing the feeling from her memories. Strangely enough, instead of the fragrance she desired, she smelled a hint of burning sulfur.
