Chapter 189
Once again, she surpassed the smell of parchment and caught the comforting scent.
It was unclear what could be seen in the strange darkness. Perhaps she couldn’t clearly see Xerath’s face, but maybe it was because… they were too close. She only stared at Xerath’s lips. She could only vaguely see the shape of the lips and wanted to know if they were as soft and sweet as described in so many forbidden stories.
A sudden shyness rose in her chest. She started fantasizing about her teacher at a time like this, during their experiments, and she… she really wanted to kiss.
The two attractive lips suddenly moved, and someone forcefully grabbed her shoulder. Her heartbeat echoed like a drum, eagerly hoping Xerath would hold her closer.
"Sylas."
Sylas abruptly woke up from her dream, oh no, could she have noticed something!
"Teacher, teacher…"
"Why don’t we guess which side will show color first?"
Sylas breathed a sigh of relief and absentmindedly said, "I guess all seven colors will have an effect because when you mix seven colors, you get black."
Xerath smiled and pursed her lips. "But when you mix seven colors, you get white. I guess it’s the ‘invisible light’ outside of purple."
Sylas seemed a bit regretful. Xerath raised her hand, as if to tickle her nose, but in the end, she didn’t. She just softly said, "Pay attention."
Sylas turned her head nervously and stared straight at the light strip on the table.
"Over there, is it getting a bit… dark?" She pointed to the purple end. "You guessed it right!"
Xerath said, "That was fast, I didn’t even have time to bet on something with you."
Sylas asked, "What would you like to bet on?"
That’s already expired this time, let’s talk about it next time." The archmage’s tone became indifferent again, thinking to himself, "Maybe I’ll bet on a kiss.
Leunen spoke up, "Hey there, my master, can I let go now?"
"Wait, let me see how much time has passed." She glanced at the clock, then took out a scroll from her own desk and said, "We still have a long way to go, please keep going."
Leunen stretched out a water column from the window, with an eye carefully examining the paper at the end of the column, and said frustratedly, "Oh dear, why is it still so far off?"
Sylas, aided by a faint glimmer of light, recorded on the table. The contrast was too strong, and she could hardly see anything, just scribbling blindly. Xerath watched her from the side and smiled, saying, "I think I should name it ‘photographic light’."
"Seems like a pretty accurate name." Sylas straightened up and exclaimed.
"’Ultraviolet photographic light’." She used three fancy-lookin’ word parts and combined ’em into a brand new word.
"Wow, that’s really long!" Sylas exclaimed.
"So let’s just call it ‘photographic light’ in private." Xerath now happily looked her in the eye, believin’ that darkness could hide lots of details, like how they almost lost control a moment ago. The little one seemed completely defenseless and didn’t react to what just happened.
So she was completely defenseless against me… That in itself was a huge temptation.
The faint light was just enough to outline Sylas’s figure. She hunched over, leanin’ on the writing desk and focusin’ on takin’ notes.
The word "development", in the archmage’s mind, meant more than just "handwriting". It meant a whole lot of things, such as revealing Sylas’s silhouette in the darkness, as well as showin’ her desires and appreciation for the physical.
She walked up to Sylas from behind, but felt too embarrassed, so she took a step forward and stood beside her.
She reached out and gently laid her hand on Sylas’s back. The warmth of her body transmitted through the thin fabric and into her palm.
"If you remember everything, we can write it later. It’s been about two hourglass’ worth of time. We can go do something else, or even repeat this experiment another time. Maybe find a smaller room."
"But…"
"Don’t you find it boring to stay in the dark and don’thing?"
Sylas wanted to nod, but after Xerath spoke, she realized that an hourglass had already passed, and she had no memory of how she had spent all that time.
It was obviously very fast.
Yes… She was just staring at Xerath, and time slipped away unnoticed.
She opened her mouth, almost wanting to tell Xerath, but at the last moment, she closed it. This sentence would reveal her thoughts too clearly, and Xerath might end up disliking her.
–It’s too risky.
"Then let’s talk."
Sylas widened her eyes in surprise, and the faint light perfectly illuminated her eyes, confirming once again that the word "develop" was used very well.
"Will you stay with me here? No, it’s okay if you have more important work to do."
Xerath asked her with a smile, "Now my library is completely dark, I can’t work."
Sylas gestured for a while, sadly saying, "I’m sorry, I’ll do this experiment next time… like you said, I’ll find a smaller room that won’t bother anyone."
Xerath whispered, "But today is a rest day."
Sylas suddenly realized that Xerath was teasing her, she wrinkled her nose in protest. Xerath couldn’t resist and reached out to pinch her tiny nose, saying, "A scroll needs at least an hour to dry. Let’s come back after four hourglasses. Let Leunen stay here."
A fountain erupted from the top of Leunen’s head, the rushing water briefly interfering with the prism light. It pleaded flatteringly, "My lord, can you please not leave me here alone?"
Sylas said, "Yes, Leunen would be bored too. It can’t even look elsewhere."
"Then I’ll leave Hyectra here with it, and we can go to the terrace to water the plants."
The attention of the little creature was already drawn to the terrace and watering the plants, "Can we water the plants on the terrace?"
Xerath said, "If we go downstairs to water the flowers, they won’t be able to survive. Have you ever been tested on long-distance elemental control?"
"Let’s go and test your abilities," she said, reaching out her hand to pull Sylas up. Hyectra stayed here with Leunen. As the two large blue water spheres met, Hyectra sighed softly and said, "I had many things to tell you, but they concern my master, so I cannot speak of them. It’s a pity."
This is the content between the water lord and the mage’s contract. They cannot reveal their master’s hidden secrets to anyone unless the other person also knows about it.
Leunen stubbornly said, "It’s quite a coincidence, I also have many secrets about my master that I can’t share with you."
Hyectra curiously said, "My dear cousin, this is actually something I wonder about. What are they keeping hidden from each other? I thought they were very close."
Leunen replied, not in a good mood, "I am just a large water sphere. I unconditionally support all the will of my master within my duties."
"You’ve spoiled her too much."
Leunen turned his mouth behind him and spat at Hyectra, "You have no right to say that to me."
Hyectra flicked the water back at Leunen, causing ripples on his soft surface. Hyectra sighed deeply, "How can you see me this way? I am simply faithfully carrying out my master’s will."
Xerath always felt a sense of danger in her heart, and this feeling made her start choosing shoes with a heel about one inch high. Sylas seemed to have grown taller, and the pressure from her made Xerath have to maintain a posture of standing tall and looking up.
Of course, she wouldn’t let Sylas know about all this, but in the moment when Sylas pushed open the terrace door, she would feel a surge of emotion.
"When you first opened this door, you weren’t even as tall as the doorknob," she softly said to her young apprentice.
Sylas turned around and smiled, "Yeah!"
"Maybe you’ll surpass me soon."
"Height?" Sylas said, purposely tiptoeing and waiting for Xerath to walk past her. Her teacher glanced at her with a smile and answered, "If you’re much taller than me, then I won’t be able to wear my clothes anymore. I’ll have to take you to get some new clothes."
Sylas wrinkled her brows in distress. If that’s the case, she didn’t want to grow taller at all. She loved the feeling of being wrapped in Xerath’s clothes. It felt a bit more distant than a hug, but still very intimate. And this action, which was very similar to a "hug," didn’t require any permission from Xerath.
But at the same time, after she tiptoed, she found that being taller than her teacher was actually quite interesting. Because of the height difference, Xerath’s cold atmosphere was weakened (though she didn’t realize it was because the archmage didn’t erect any defenses against her). The archmage had to look up at her, and it seemed that even their positions between them had changed.
Especially, especially, those books said that by just lowering her head, she could kiss her…
When Xerath passed by her, she paused for a moment, turned towards her, and kindly let her experience the feeling of being taller than the teacher.
She even asked with a smile, "How do you like this feeling?"
Sylas was extremely surprised in her heart: Does she not mind that I am taller than her?
"It’s hard to say… but it’s quite fun, of course."
The archmage seemed to have no intention of continuing this topic. She walked straight to the edge of the terrace, where water flowed out from the cracks and slowly descended. With her precise movements, she made the water penetrate the soil. Then she opened her eyes and said, "Give it a try?"
Sylas also walked to the edge of the terrace. Large amounts of water formed beside her, and the elements obediently followed her commands. They also slowly descended, but at such a long distance, Sylas felt inadequate. Xerath stood behind her, placing her hands on Sylas’s shoulders and said, "Don’t be afraid. Do you remember your magic broom? You don’t need to fully control them. Water has its own properties, utilize their weight, utilize capillary action… Just do it a bit… Yes, like that."
