Chapter 183
She wasn’t afraid of the fall. During the fall, she opened a wind shield and slid down a wind current next to the tower to the rooftop of Falcon Fortress. She saw the person who pushed her quickly running into the tower of Spring Hall. Her wind blade hit the stone edge near the person’s feet, but it didn’t hit the culprit.
Luna was completely scared and for a while, she shouted Sylas’s name with a heart-wrenching scream.
There was only one way down from the rooftop of Falcon Fortress, so she had to go down from there into the interior of Falcon Fortress. Finally, she met Luna on the upper level of Falcon Fortress’s double-sided staircase, but Luna didn’t see who it was.
"When we passed by each other, I even looked at him, but I really can’t remember."
"Are they people we know? Not Veses?" she asked the names of several people she dueled with, and Luna said none of them were the ones.
This made her feel very strange because she initially thought it was someone seeking revenge for losing to her.
"My little fairy! Aren’t you worried that someone wants to harm you?"
Sylas shook her head slowly. There were always people who wanted to harm her in the past, so she got used to it. But she had a bad feeling this time, a strange feeling awakening within her, as if… if she had to say it, she felt it was her "wild instinct": the instinct that helped her fight her way out of the depths of dark memories. She wasn’t afraid of duels, of facing threats of death; in fact, she was a little excited, hoping to legally hunt down her prey.
"Oh my heavens, we can’t take the Spring Hall road anymore! We must walk underground from now on."
"Don’t be afraid, I can walk alone if necessary."
"If two people walking together can still be targeted, how can you choose to walk alone? I’m going to tell Eilan!" she exclaimed, dragging Sylas huffing and puffing around, looking for Eilan everywhere, but they didn’t see her even when it was almost time for class.
During a break the next day, succubus Kuowa found her and told her that Eilan wanted her to go to the office.
Kuowa was still wearing a black coat, and no matter how she looked at it, Sylas felt like the coat didn’t really belong to Kuowa but more like Eilan’s. The reason was that the coat was too solemn and very neat, giving off a cold and hard effect that perfectly matched Eilan’s demeanor. And the clothes suitable for Kuowa… even if they were black, they should have lace trims, right?
Kuowa suddenly smiled and asked her, "Did you hear that someone pushed you off the floating staircase at Spring Hall yesterday?"
"Ah… um, yes, we were actually going to report it to Dean Eilan yesterday, but we couldn’t find her."
"I’m really sorry. Starting today until the railing is installed, there will be people guarding both sides of the floating staircase. Don’t worry too much, but also don’t go to secluded places. If anything strange happens, please tell Eilan or me. Don’t let it affect your studying and exams because of nerves."
Sylas said thank you and then asked in surprise, "So you didn’t call me to the office today because of this incident? I thought…"
Kuowa shook her head, "That’s not the main reason. There’s something else I want to talk to you about."
Sylas wanted to ask why exactly she was called to the office, but Kuowa not only didn’t answer, but also kept asking questions like "Your skin looks really good. What do you use to take care of it?" and "This outfit is nice. Where did you buy it?" Sylas tried to let it go, but then Kuowa even extended a tail from under her clothing to touch her face. What’s more infuriating is that Sylas noticed she could float. There were two strange compartments on the back of her coat, and her bat-like black fleshy wings extended from these compartments, allowing her to float in the air with her hands resting behind her head. She even used the tip of her tail, which was shaped like an inverted heart, to touch her face.
Sylas was shocked and scared. She felt that this action was a bit provocative, but when she protested, Kuowa smiled and said in a very seductive voice, "I’m a succubus, you know. It’s in a succubus’s nature to tease humans. Can you please not fall for it? Otherwise, Eilan will punish me."
The journey was very long, to the point that when Sylas finally saw Eilan, it felt like seeing a savior. Eilan reached out her hand as if for Kuowa to shake it, but when Kuowa went to shake her hand, Eilan scolded her in a low voice, saying, "Kuowa, stop teasing the child and sit next to me nicely."
Kuowa stuck her tongue out and sat next to Eilan, while politely asking Sylas to wait a moment until she finished writing something in her hand.
But after a short while, Kuowa couldn’t stay still and went up to Eilan. She looked at her like a little dog, behaving really well. It’s hard to believe that just a moment ago, she was mischievously playing tricks on humans with her tail.
Sylas had a feeling of danger, as if she had discovered something.
Eilan seemed to have finally finished writing. She put down her feather pen, pushed her glasses up, and said, "The people from the Oversight Committee are here to ask you some questions. Please answer them honestly. They are in the meeting room next door. Someone will come to get you soon. In the meantime, please wait here."
"Is it… about the duel?" To be honest, Sylas was still a little afraid, mainly because she was worried that Xerath would find out about what happened and have a lower opinion of her.
Eilan smiled and said, "No, it’s something else. It’s not because you have violated any agreement or laws of any country."
"Oh…"
Sylas reluctantly calmed down and after a while, a young man pushed open the door and asked Sylas to go to the next room.
After she left the room, she saw someone at the end of the corridor, with a red Shame Mark on their forehead. She guessed that this person had just left the meeting room, and it seemed like they were not on her side. When this person turned and showed a profile view while going down the stairs, she immediately recognized who it was–Veses.
"It’s quite strange, isn’t it?" This question made her even more puzzled. Wasn’t it because of the multiple duels she had in school that caught the attention of the Oversight Committee?
The young man took her into the meeting room. There was already a middle-aged man sitting at the conference table. He looked handsome and elegant, with a short beard. In front of him were some old-looking documents, with simple paper covers and words written on them. They were clipped together.
He smiled and said, "Hello, I am Detective Diego. Please have a seat."
"Hello, I am Sylas."
The detective smiled kindly and said, "So, you’re Sylas. Don’t be afraid. I just need to ask you a few questions. Please answer truthfully."
"Okay."
"Did you apply for a geomagnetic measurement gauge last year?" he asked, absentmindedly running his pen over the notebook in front of him. Sylas thought it might be a roster, but it was difficult to see clearly from her angle.
"Yes."
"What is it used for?"
Sylas wasn’t sure if she heard correctly, "What?"
"Purpose, madam," Detective Diego smiled kindly.
"Of course, it’s to measure the Earth’s pulse."
"Location?"
"Doloru Town, over a hundred miles east. Detective, I submitted a measurement report, and it’s all there in the report."
"Yes, certainly. Please answer the question." Detective Diego’s expression was friendly, but his questioning attitude was unquestionable. He then asked several more questions about the Earth’s pulse, even asking her to describe the measurement method. However, strangely, there were also some unrelated questions mixed in, like whether the school cafeteria food was tasty, which left her completely puzzled about his motives.
The inquiry was brief. "This is the last question," Diego smiled and said, "Which wizard helped you apply for the measuring device?"
Sylas hesitated and asked, "Can I not answer?"
Diego smiled and replied, "You can, absolutely." As he said this, he drew a checkmark on the paper, then stood up and shook hands with Sylas.
Now that she stood up, she could see the full extent of the paper. Initially, she was only curious about how her answers would be recorded in Diego’s notes, but soon she realized it was a list. On top of it was a name, Veses, and above Veses were other familiar names, almost all of them followers of Sauran.
Oh no! Was she really not called here because of the duel? These names really make her doubt. Seeing her doubtful expression, Diego reassured her, "Don’t be afraid, it’s just a few questions. You don’t have to worry, you’re neither a suspect nor in danger."
Sylas nodded and bid farewell as she left the house. She couldn’t figure out how these people were related to her or the ley lines, but none of it mattered compared to her afternoon exams. She quickly forgot about it.
For Sylas and Caroline, the final exams were no longer the most important thing. After all the exams were over, they moved out of the school and rented a room in a hotel. It was the off-season for trading, so the town was mostly empty, with only a few students like them living there.
Swis didn’t take the exams. Instead, he found a job as a copyist in the local Mage Guild to accompany his sister (they never seemed to have been separated before). Life became more routine. During the day, they would study and do exercises together in the restaurant downstairs. They would also have their meals there at noon and in the evening. Swis had a regular job and always came back in time to eat with them.
One afternoon, he didn’t show up at the dinner table. He only returned after dark. Caroline scolded him with dissatisfaction, but she still brought out the lasagna she saved for him and lectured him while he ate.
"Sis," he choked, "I couldn’t help it. I accidentally got a register wet, and my boss wants me to copy it all before I can leave."
"Why didn’t you use magic to dry it?"
"It’s a sad story, really. I spilled ink on it, and just trying to decipher the words made my eyes almost blind. So, I got a fresh new notebook and I have to copy it by hand."
"Why didn’t you ask both of us for help?" Swis still didn’t have his own water lord (he planned to get one next semester), but Caroline and Sylas did, so they could help him with the copying work.
Swis frowned, using a fork to poke at the cooled and solidified lasagna. "It’s not good to have others meddling in my work. Besides, the Mage Guild doesn’t want unrelated people seeing their things, those stubborn old wizards."
