Chapter 167
As someone seemed to be wandering outside the classroom, after Sylas’s homework was reviewed, Dean Eilan came in and interrupted the class, taking Sylas out directly.
Luna watched her worriedly, but more than that, she regretted not being able to see the marks on Mede’s face. However, Sylas gave her a reassuring look.
Like she would actually feel reassured!
Sylas followed behind Eilan, and the succubus walked in a line beside her. However, unlike the last time Luna saw the succubus, this one, with milky white skin and pitch-black hair, was wearing a long coat that completely covered her overly provocative clothing.
"Ms. Hevel, I believe you already know why I came to see you, hmm?"
"I think I have a rough understanding. Will I be punished? I looked up the law, and using the ‘Dueling Law’ within the Methylani Principality is actually legal, even Star Song Castle can’t make an exception."
Eilan sighed, "Indeed. But do you realize that by doing so, you’re making enemies?"
"I think I might have a general idea."
"So you haven’t thought about the consequences you’ll have to face?"
"No consequence will make me regret my decision from yesterday."
"Even if… you might face retaliation because of it?"
"Isn’t that an obvious and direct consequence?"
Eilan’s succubus Kuowa suddenly burst into laughter, covering her mouth with her hand, she asked jokingly, "Don’t you regret not attending the exam?"
Sylas answered with a smile, "Actually, I do a little. The ‘elderly family members’ at home are not happy about it. They want to see me graduate with all A’s, and having a C on my report card might drive them crazy."
"Ha, I understand that feeling."
In a relaxed atmosphere, Eilan and she arrived at an office. Eilan asked her to sit down, while she and Kuowa sat across from her.
"But now, I need you to tell me the events without hiding anything. What happened that required you to use the ‘Dueling Law’? Dueling Law has been out of fashion for a long time."
Sylas looked into her eyes and sincerely said, "Last night, on my way back from the activity room, I passed by the small garden outside ‘Spring Hall’. It was a shortcut, but on the way, I encountered Mede and a female student. They got into an argument, and then the female student left. While Mede was chasing after her, he bumped into me, but he didn’t apologize."
Eilan interrupted her recording and asked, "Did you challenge him to a duel because of this?"
Sylas frowned and said, "Not only that, he also insulted me with words."
"What did he say?"
Sylas pondered for a moment and said, "I’m not very familiar with these words… He called me ‘a worthless person without eyes’, ‘a crazy woman’, and ‘a lapdog’."
"Oh my goodness," Kuowa exclaimed, "Eilan, I can’t believe there are such rude words in the place you oversee…"
Eilan’s expression was calm, with a soft tone, she asked, "Who is the dog referring to?"
Sylas’s expression changed, she answered as calmly as possible, "archmageXerath."
"Why does he call you a ‘dog’?"
"I think you must still remember what happened last semester. Sauran seemed to believe that the twelve people who stayed behind were all suspects, so he called us ‘dogs’ and ‘blind fanatics’. Mede might have been influenced by him, because besides Sauran, Mede and his companions, no one else called us that way. Of course, this is all just a guess, I haven’t thoroughly investigated it."
"What happened next? Did you propose a duel?"
"Yes."
"Did you punch him? Was it during the duel?"
"Yes."
Eilan frowned and asked, "How did you manage to do it?"
Sylas said in a strange way, "I punched him, right?" She clenched her fist and swung it in the air.
"No, I mean how did you get past his water lord and his attacks and defenses?"
"I trapped his water lord with mine. He was about to say a long spell, but I walked up to him before he finished, so I punched his left cheek and then used Earth Child to throw him out of the duel ring. And he lost."
"Is that all?"
Sylas nodded confidently.
"Who can prove all of this?"
"Hmm… no one can prove anything from the duel. Maybe you can ask my water lord? But after I threw him out, two girls passed by, but I don’t remember what they looked like. Also, he said something mean, so the violin samurai sticker was triggered, and his mouth got sealed by magic."
Eilan nodded and gestured towards Kuowa.
Kuowa gently patted Sylas’s hand and asked, "Sylas, sweetie, why did you duel with him?"
Sylas suddenly noticed that her eyes were purple, like a not very pure crystal, with smoky threads inside pointing towards her pupils. Because they were not very pure, the contents were very rich and beautiful. She even had the illusion of falling into them.
Kuowa’s sweet voice became distant and then close again, but more than the sound, its meaning became clearer. "Sweetheart, why did you duel with him?"
"He insulted Xerath."
"She is my ‘mentor’."
Kuowa frowned and whispered to Eilan, "’Mentor’?"
"I’m afraid that’s the current popular term used for ‘idol’," Eilan shrugged and thought of a similar explanation. As the head of school, everyday work involved mingling with the crowd and investigating, so he was forced to be familiar with various informal expressions used by young people.
"So she didn’t lie at all, my esteemed head of school," Kuowa smiled at Eilan, snapped her fingers in front of Sylas and said, "Wake up."
Sylas seemed like she just woke up from a dream and said, "Huh? Sorry, could you please repeat that?"
Eilan laughed and said, "It’s alright, I’ve finished asking. Please wait here for a while."
Sylas watched them leave without understanding, but then another person, Maryland Stellar, Xerath’s wife, came in. She remembered her.
Maryland asked, "What happened to you?"
Sylas quickly stood up and almost rushed towards her, speaking softly and urgently, "Please keep me and…"
"Shhh, I know. But if Eilan insists on the guarantor being responsible, then I have to…"
"…but even so, I still don’t want…"
"I don’t want either, shhh, I’ll try my best, okay?" But she still didn’t know what it was about.
"Thank you so much!" Sylas seemed genuinely happy, her smile radiant as if the room was filled with sunshine.
A child who was very different from Xerath, at least in the sense that they loved to smile.
Suddenly, succubus Kuowa knocked on the door and said to Maryland, "The principal wants to see you."
She took Maryland to a meeting room. She accidentally overheard a conversation inside, but the voices came out on their own. The window curtains were not pulled tightly, and she saw Sauran angrily shouting at Eilan while the vice principal sat bored beside them, twirling a pen. Eilan seemed helpless.
It was probably because Sauran caused trouble again and was punished by Eilan but didn’t agree with the appeal… But then she saw the huge Shame Mark on top of Mede Sauran’s head. Students from Star Song Castle twenty years ago were familiar with this witchcraft, known as the "Dueling Law" from the Methylani Principality’s code. It gradually fell out of popularity because the materials were too expensive and was almost forgotten. She didn’t expect to see it today.
This…is very interesting. She keenly felt that this mark was something Sylas didn’t want Xerath to know about. So she manipulated the wind to create a small passage, allowing the voices to obediently reach her ears.
"…Just because of this matter involving Xerath, you’re biased towards her? You’re unbelievable! I’ve had enough of all of you! Principal Karrom! I want to impeach her! She’s abusing her authority!"
Principal Karrom was obviously fed up too. He sighed, wrote something on paper, and then said, "Please present evidence."
"Isn’t the evidence right in front of you? She favors Xerath, even supports that brat openly insulting me. And she gave my nephew this thing, and the dean of students doesn’t even care!"
Eilan sighed and said, "The ‘Dueling Law’ is legal, sir, and the guild cannot forcibly rule that an action supported by a country’s law is illegal. As for the accusation of supporting someone insulting Mr. Sauran, it is completely false. I have already explained this, Mr. Karrom."
Vice principal Mr. Karrom, a man with a big nose and a mustache, touched his beard and nodded wearily, saying, "It is impossible to determine the dean of students’ bias towards Xerath based on just these two incidents."
"But that brat dueled with Mede for Xerath! It’s because of that, she doesn’t care!"
Karrom sighed deeply and said, "The school has no authority over duels, and your nephew himself admitted to insulting that female student. It is completely legal for her to ask for a duel to defend her honor. As for Dean Eilan, she supports the laws of the kingdom and there’s nothing wrong with that."
"But she did it for Xerath!"
"There is no concrete evidence to fully support that claim. Your nephew insulted the other party, and violin samurai can testify to that. Violin samurai wouldn’t lie."
Sauran said, "Ah, this is where the focus lies. Sylas’s guarantor is Maryland, who happens to be Xerath’s sister-in-law. What else does this show? You are all in cahoots!"
Kuowa knocked on the door, and when Eilan heard, she said, "Mr. Karrom, I’ve brought Sylas and Maryland."
Succubus opened the door and had Maryland sit behind Eilan. Succubus Kuowa walked over and sat next to Eilan, with her tail poking out from under her dress, enjoying herself. Returning to this dull place seemed to make her feel uncomfortable.
Vice Principal Karrom smiled, rubbed his nose, and asked, "Ms. Maryland, here is the testimony that Sylas just gave: ‘Mede called me a lapdog, so I challenged him to a duel’. Based on this, Mr. Sauran claims that Sylas asked for a duel because of Xerath. Could you please explain their relationship?"
