Chapter 130
Xerath remembered the not-so-long two months, during which she always had the impulse to communicate with Sylas at this time. Before, when she was at home, knowing that Sylas was there was enough. But when she was not there, the absence accentuated her intense emotions. Before leaving the mage tower, the box for the letters was even placed on the cabinet near the living room door. Xerath only put it back in her own bedroom after she left.
"Did your friends not play with you?"
"Hmm… no, at this time we are in different dorm rooms. We will continue studying in the classroom at 7 o’clock."
Xerath shrugged, "It’s just because there was no one to play with you. In advanced school, everyone has a roommate, and usually you get along well with your roommate. They will make up for your loneliness, so don’t worry too much." But what the little beast felt for her was different from what she thought. It wasn’t that kind of… "Even if someone is with me at this time, I would still think of you" kind of feeling.
Sylas pursed her lips, showing that she didn’t quite agree with Xerath’s words. "I still prefer the feeling of being at home, doing nothing at this time… with you."
Xerath chuckled softly, "But what will we do then? I still have to read, you know. I made a reading list for myself, but I’ve only finished half of it. And I also have an extra assignment – I have to write a diary in the Gu Gaoboren language. I have a pen pal who specializes in studying Gaoboren culture, and we occasionally exchange letters. She helps me correct my compositions and stuff."
It felt like Xerath was doing just fine without her, and Sylas felt a bit disappointed for a moment, but she quickly recovered. "You’re really amazing!"
"No, not amazing… purposeful play is always efficient. So, can’t find any books you’d like to read?"
"No, no," she was afraid that Xerath would add more burden to her, and then she would have to rearrange her work schedule. She quickly declined, "I just want to take a break, I’ll go read."
Xerath had a mischievous grin, feeling satisfied with herself for resolving the awkwardness, and especially happy about her ability to do so.
But it always scared Sylas away with her homework, and in the end, the result was that she refused to get close to herself anymore, right? The archmage felt a little sad in his heart.
The mage tower became lively again. Titus would often spin around Sylas when he had nothing to do. Her main work of reading and writing articles had returned, which made her feel quite safe. During the day, Xerath would sometimes go to the laboratory, and at night, she would always sit with Sylas in the living room to read books. Sometimes she would ask about Sylas’s progress, but Sylas always replied, "I have no idea."
"So, how much longer do you need? You know, sometimes work cannot be done without a deadline, and it will be endlessly delayed."
"Um… two weeks? I think I need to go to the library in Withered Leaf City. Would you be willing to take me there? Or maybe send me there…" She looked at Xerath’s hair, hmm, it wasn’t much longer, still short, making her look very energetic.
Xerath couldn’t help but touch her temple and then sighed, "Although it’s strange to wear a hat in the summer, I’ll just wear one. And we also need to buy groceries."
"Really? You don’t have to do that for me…"
"No, I’m not forcing you," the archmage said with a cold face, "We’ll go on Saturday."
Time often seems insufficient in the face of busy work. Saturday arrived quickly. When Sylas saw Xerath in the morning, she was wearing a thin black jacket, slim pants, and narrow leather shoes, deepening the sharp impression she gave to others.
There was a top hat on the table, probably made of fabric. Realizing that it would probably look good on Xerath, Sylas suddenly felt excited. After breakfast, in Sylas’s gaze, Xerath put the hat on her head and asked her, "How does it look?"
"It’s very beautiful. ‘Extraordinary’…" She has a pretty face and a good figure. Anything she wears looks good, let alone clothes that fit well. This is what Sylas concluded after staying in the mortal realm for over two months and meeting many people.
It’s been a long time since she heard her say this sentence. Xerath smiled meaninglessly, then instructed Titus to take good care of things.
Xerath’s smile and non-smile are very different. Sylas quietly watched her squat down and touch the footstool. Maybe she herself didn’t know, but her inner self was gentle, even the wind next to her was gentle. And when she had a stern face, the wind would tremble.
"Sylas, let’s go?"
She turned around and reached out her hand. Sylas took a few quick steps to grab her hand before Xerath could regret.
Even though the summer in Withered Leaf City isn’t very hot, when the archmage with a hat on top of his head appeared at the end of the guild teleportation room, some sort of alarm system was triggered, causing all the lights in the entire hall to flicker abruptly. Everyone looked over in this direction.
Xerath held Sylas’s hand and walked towards the door. The hall fell into silence, except for the humming sound of the portal, the only other sound was the crispy noise of Xerath’s shoes on the ground. There were only a few staff members, who stood still and watched them leave.
Stepping out of the doorway, the loud sounds instantly surrounded them, but this was the perfect cover for voices. Xerath lowered her voice and said to Sylas, "I’m sorry I can’t visit you often. I’m afraid my identity as an archmage might cause trouble for you."
"What kind of trouble? Hmm… I really want you to come to school and find me. I think it would be fun."
"What fun things will there be?"
Sylas paused and couldn’t think of anything fun for a moment. She hesitantly said, "Maybe… maybe we can go to the library together to read?"
Xerath laughed and gently touched her face with warm gray eyes. "Even though I’ve stayed at Star Song Castle for a while, I don’t really know what fun things there are. Biatris might know. She’s a wind summoner, and her family is rich and powerful. Biatris is a spoiled young lady, who is basically known for eating, drinking, and having fun."
"She is your senior, so wouldn’t she take you out to play?"
"Take me? No, no, she hardly takes me out. She only takes Sashara. They’re very close." She hesitated whether to explain clearly the relationship between Sashara and Biatris to Sylas. Although it was her new discovery, for some reason the other senior brothers didn’t seem surprised, and even the teacher didn’t see anything wrong with their intimacy.
"Why? This seems unfair. Is it because Sashara is special to her?"
Xerath asked with a wicked tone, "Special? How is she special?"
"Um… I can’t really say," Sylas completely didn’t feel Xerath’s "malice" and naively wanted to find a word to summarize. "If there’s a fun place, I would also be the first to think of taking the teacher. Whether others take or not doesn’t matter."
"Is that so? Don’t you need to bring your twin companions too? Won’t they get angry if they find out?"
"Secretly, without telling them," Sylas said with a smile.
Xerath felt pleased for a moment, but then realized that Sylas’s perception of uniqueness might not be the same as Sashara’s to Biatris, most likely it was a simpler kind of emotion.
"Do not tarnish her," the archmage reminded himself once again in his heart.
"So," Sylas said when she noticed she had no continuation, she asked, "Is that how they are?"
"Probably, anyway they often leave me behind to play, so I have a lot of free time, all of which I use to read and do homework without any interruptions."
"Hmm… going out to play with others does take up a lot of time."
"If possible, still go out for a bit, don’t be like me."
Sylas suddenly said seriously, "But how can that work? If we don’t seize the time, we won’t become an archmage quickly… um…"
Xerath looked at her curiously and said, "Do you also want to become an archmage?"
Sylas felt like someone had discovered her secrets, and she turned red with embarrassment and anger. She almost rushed forward to cover Xerath’s eyes and said, "Don’t, don’t laugh at me!"
"No, of course not," said Xerath, grabbing her hand to stop her from really coming closer. But the smile on her face gave her away.
"I know I don’t have the same talents as you, and I’m not as hardworking, but I… I…"
Xerath let go of her hand and continued walking forward with her hands in her pockets. She chuckled softly and said, "That’s not true. You definitely have talents, and you’re working hard. I’m excited to see you grow."
"Teacher…"
"But it’s not just talk. You know that it takes a lot of hard work and studying, right?"
"Hmm…" The little creature followed behind her, with a pale face that had a rosy color, and nothing about it looked like a wild beast.
Xerath tightened her grip on her hand, and Sylas felt pain. She whispered to her.
"Do you know?" Suddenly, Xerath jumped in front of her, took a big step back, and looked directly into her eyes. "I’m looking forward… I’m looking forward to that day."
The burning gaze ignited Sylas’s heart. She wanted to say something, but her mind went blank and only four options remained, "call for the wind," "call for water," "call for fire," and "call for rocks." But this was a densely populated town, so calling for elements randomly would cause trouble.
So, she had no choice but to stay silent. Watching Xerath, who wanted to speak but couldn’t, she smiled and said, "I know you will try your best, but even if you can’t achieve it, it’s okay. I will… I will…"
…love you.
Xerath gently touched her face, let go of her hand, and put both hands in their pockets. They walked proudly ahead, occasionally holding onto their hat when the wind was strong.
As the wind caught her coat, Sylas accurately grabbed onto Xerath’s arm and intimately linked with her.
Not ten years, not twenty years, not even fifty or sixty years are enough. I want to be with her like this forever.
Xerath looked ahead, while Sylas looked down at the road, laughing softly.
