Chapter 97: The Reason for Victory

After breakfast, Luo Ji called Luo Yong and Black Jackal, intending to go outside the camp to investigate.

He had won inexplicably before, and although winning was a good thing, not understanding it would always leave a lingering doubt in his mind.

The group left the camp and entered the forest area, quickly discovering dense footprints remaining in the woodland.

During these seven days, the people of his Mirror Tribe had not left the camp, so these footprints were not theirs.

This meant they must have been left by the invaders.

Since the invaders had reached this location, it was impossible for them not to have discovered their camp.

Luo Ji was an intelligent person, and after a moment of thought, he quickly realized.

“Could it be that my ancient city wall deterred them?”

Luo Ji could say he understood this action quite well.

When playing strategy war games with ‘invasion mode’ in the past, many players did this, especially in games where losing soldiers resulted in substantial losses.

If they saw the opponent’s defense was like an impenetrable fortress and they could not win, with no chance of victory, they would choose to preserve their troops and simply retreat without fighting.

In the eyes of players like Luo Ji, this was a perfectly normal practice.

However, the problem was that retreating should not result in the system judging them as completely annihilated.

With this question in mind, Luo Ji decided to follow the footprints to investigate.

After walking for about ten minutes, a strong smell of blood immediately assaulted them.

Luo Ji frowned.

“Liu Zheng, go up and take a look.”

Liu Zheng was the formal name Luo Ji had taken an opportunity to give Black Jackal earlier, also boosting his loyalty by three points.

After all, he was one of his 5 star generals, calling him Black Jackal was simply not dignified enough.

Liu Zheng responded to the order and quickly approached, carrying his battle axe.

Upon seeing the scene, his expression immediately changed.

“Leader, there’s blood everywhere around here! There must have been a battle, and a very fierce one!”

Hearing this, Luo Ji’s brows furrowed even tighter.

He quickly took a few steps forward, and the large, shocking patches of blood immediately entered his sight.

“Who did this?”

Undoubtedly, the complete annihilation of the invaders was due to an attack by an unknown third-party force.

“Could it be the Barbarian Bear Tribe?”

Various thoughts continuously flashed through Luo Ji’s mind, only to be rejected one by one.

“Impossible, the other party is a player after all.”

“It’s a bit unrealistic for the Barbarian Bear Tribe to completely wipe out a player’s force.”

“Wait, this is…”

Looking at the footprints that appeared within his sight, Luo Ji’s pupils constricted slightly.

“Beasts?”

Just as Luo Ji was thinking this, Liu Zheng, who was searching nearby, also leaned in to take a look.

“These footprints… They look like hyenas.”

Before Luo Ji could react to this answer, Luo Yong, who was searching on the other side, also spoke loudly.

“Tribal Chief, we’ve found a large number of hyena footprints here too!”

“Those outsiders were probably attacked by a hyena pack.”

Outsiders, the term used by the natives for invading players.

This term had been passed down through word of mouth in this world, saving Luo Ji a lot of trouble.

“Invading players, hyena packs, bloodstains, time was the seventh night, location is this forest…”

The clues in Luo Ji’s mind slowly began to connect.

A few minutes later, he thought of a possibility.

“In other words, that player named Wang Chao, though he abandoned the idea of attacking the city, was not directly deterred by me.”

“Instead, he changed tactics, intending to ambush me in this forest, waiting for me to leave the camp to hunt, to launch an ambush battle?”

“However, he clearly did not expect that behind my ancient city wall there is also a large Mirror Lake with abundant fish resources.”

“Coupled with the jerky stockpiled earlier, there’s no need to go out hunting for a short while.”

“To avoid exposing their position, they definitely couldn’t light a fire.”

“And with human eyesight, it’s hard to see clearly in the forest at night.”

“Maintaining this state, they were attacked by a hyena pack on the seventh night…”

“That group of hyenas originally intended to take advantage of the night to seek revenge on me, as I had killed quite a lot of them before.”

“The invaders hiding in the forest were clearly mistaken by the hyenas for my people.”

“Hyenas are nocturnal animals.”

“At night, humans with impaired vision would naturally not be a match for a hyena pack.”

“They were attacked, and then annihilated…”

Having analyzed this far, Luo Ji’s gaze swept over the area, which, though covered in bloodstains, was surprisingly empty.

“The bodies were, without surprise, dragged away as food.”

His analysis complete, Luo Ji let out a long breath.

Although he felt he was mostly right, it was still safer to confirm.

“Liu Zheng, take a few warriors and the archer squad, and follow the bloodstains.”

“Kill any hyenas you encounter.”

“If you find the bodies of outsiders, bring their weapons and equipment back.”

“As for the bodies, dispose of them too.”

After giving these instructions, Luo Ji turned to Luo Yong.

“Luo Yong, you take a group of people and clean up the bloodstains in this forest.”

“Afterwards, have everyone patrol and be wary of potentially appearing hyena packs and the people from the Barbarian Bear Tribe to the west.”

Having given out the instructions for this area, Luo Ji walked back to the tribal camp.

This month with the truce token also had to be put to good use.

First, he would transfer the construction team and lumberjack team to the Black Rock Tribe’s side.

The ancient city wall there also needed to be built.

The Mirror Tribe, as his current main city, might also become the capital of the entire civilization in the future.

Considering this factor, Luo Ji had enclosed a very large area in the early stages, which led to that massive project.

The Black Rock Tribe’s side, however, clearly did not need that, at least not now.

The current Black Rock Tribe, rather than being a sub-city, was more like a large coal factory established by Luo Ji to obtain coal resources.

Its daily task was to mine coal, it did not need to do anything else.

Therefore, the Black Rock Tribe did not need to enclose too large a territory in the early stages.

They only needed to protect the small area near the coal mine.

Building such a small circle of ancient city walls should be more than enough for the construction team, who already had one experience.

If things went smoothly, it might even be completed in a month.

In comparison, the problem with the Barbarian Bear Tribe was more troublesome, giving Luo Ji a considerable headache.

Over three hundred people?

How could he manage that?

Even if he could win, he would still need to be able to digest them!

Imagine, suddenly having three hundred more mouths to feed in the tribe.

Just thinking about that scene made his brain ache!
