Chapter 497: The Turn of Events (3)
After returning to the Charhan tribe’s camp and settling the plundered cattle, sheep, and horses, One-Eyed Buhe, following Siqin’s instructions, reinforced his men and quickly rode to the outskirts of the Sunite tribe, waiting for an opportune moment.
Siqin had anticipated that the hot-tempered Abucha would definitely go to Bileg to demand an explanation.
However, Abucha, not intending to start a war with the Khanar tribe, would certainly not bring too many men.
200 or 300 would be about right.
With just that many men, clashing with Batel, who had just had his entire tribe slaughtered and was consumed by rage, would be disastrous.
Even if that foolish young Batel hadn’t discovered the clue on the animal hide, Abucha would definitely suffer a terrible fate.
And if he did discover it…
It’s no exaggeration to say Abucha would be dead for sure!
This way, their opportunity would naturally arise.
Calculating the time and estimating it was roughly right, One-Eyed Buhe decisively waved his hand, ordering a full-scale assault, charging straight towards the nearby Sunite tribe’s camp.
Unlike the previous surprise attack on the Khanar tribe, where most of the Khanar tribe’s forces had been led out by Batel to plunder grain, leaving only a few hundred men in the tribe, which was no match for them, the Sunite tribe’s forces who had gone to plunder grain had already returned.
Abucha had only led 300 men towards the Khanar tribe.
In other words, there were quite a lot of men inside the Sunite tribe’s camp at this moment…
However, Siqin, from the very beginning, hadn’t intended to slaughter the Sunite tribe.
On one hand, it was impractical, and even if he did, he would pay a heavy price.
On the other hand, it was more useful to let the Sunite tribe survive in a half-dead state than to directly kill them off.
It was also for this very reason that One-Eyed Buhe himself didn’t charge into the fray this time.
After all, his appearance with one blind eye was too conspicuous.
After charging into the Sunite tribe’s camp and fighting two rounds in a convincing manner, One-Eyed Buhe, knowing his mission was complete, quickly gave the signal to retreat.
His unit came and went quickly.
The enraged Sunite tribal forces naturally pursued for a while.
But the other side was well-prepared.
They ran headlong all the way without stopping.
It was impossible to catch them, and the wind and snow were growing stronger.
Even though the Sunite tribal forces were unhappy, they could only temporarily retreat to their own tribal camp.
As luck would have it, just as they retreated, the men who had followed Abucha to the Khanar tribe returned, looking utterly disheveled.
They had started with a full 300 men, but only 6 or 7 of them returned alive.
The Sunite tribal members who recognized them quickly went to meet them.
“What happened? Why are you so injured? Where’s the chief and the others?!”
“Ha… it’s Batel of the Khanar tribe…”
One of the severely wounded grassland warriors answered, his voice weak. This, coupled with the howling wind and snow, it made it particularly difficult for others to hear.
“It’s Batel of the Khanar tribe, he killed… he killed the chief…”
The people who finally managed to hear this sentence were struck dumb on the spot.
They simply froze, completely dumbfounded.
In their minds, their chief had just angrily led his men to settle scores with Bileg. And now he was dead? And by Bileg’s son, no less…
After this news was brought back to the tribal camp, the entire camp immediately erupted into chaos. Some were heartbroken and indignant, while others were filled with disbelief.
“Are the Khanar tribe people insane?”
“To actually kill the chief, do they want to start a war with our Sunite tribe?!”
“Wait! Could that unit that just attacked our tribal camp have been the Khanar tribe?!”
“Yes, it’s possible! While killing the chief, they directly sent people to attack our tribal camp, wanting to wipe us out in one go!”
As they spoke, the people of the Sunite tribe became increasingly agitated.
“Revenge! Slaughter the Khanar tribe to avenge the chief!!”
“Yes, gather the men now, and go back to take revenge!”
“The warriors of the Sunite tribe are no cowards!”
This turn of events was something Siqin had clearly not anticipated.
The Sunite tribe actually gathered its forces so quickly and charged towards the Khanar tribe’s camp.
Before nightfall, they fiercely engaged Batel’s forces in another bloody battle.
At this point, this blood feud could be considered settled.
Siqin, upon hearing this news later, after a moment of stunned silence, quickly reacted.
Then he let out a scoff.
That fellow Abucha had produced many daughters before finally having a son.
But the problem was, considering his age, his son was only 5 years old now.
The position of tribal chief obviously couldn’t be handed over to his 5 years old son.
And according to their grassland rules, those daughters weren’t eligible to inherit either.
This meant that Abucha’s brothers were the most direct heirs, weren’t they?
It was unclear how many of these uncle-generation scoundrels truly wanted to avenge Abucha.
But the one thing that was certain was that once Batel was killed and the former chief avenged, the brother who killed Batel would rightfully become the new chief of the Sunite tribe.
That’s why these scoundrels were so eager to gather their men and rush over.
2 or 3 days later, the chiefs of the other two tribes among the five major tribes also received the news.
And their expressions were utterly bewildered.
Abucha is dead?
Killed by Batel?
The Khanar tribe was slaughtered?
Bileg is also dead?
Done by the Sunite tribe people?
The two tribal chiefs, who hadn’t even had time to demand an explanation from Bileg for the losses incurred during the grain raid, now had their minds in a complete mess.
What the heck was all this? Why was it so chaotic?
Ultimately, what exactly were these two groups from the Khanar tribe and the Sunite tribe fighting for?
For a moment, the chiefs of these two major tribes didn’t know what to do.
Looking at the two pleas for help, directly stamped with blood seals, sent by the Khanar tribe and the Sunite tribe respectively, both were a bit stunned.
The situation on the grasslands could be said to have been thoroughly stirred up by Siqin.
And at this very moment, looking at the same two pleas for help written in the grassland language, Siqin’s lips curled into a playful, cold sneer.
Kiln Simpson
“written?”
It’s only been years since the world was supposedly in the stone age, with no technology to speak of like someone dropped a bunch of babies thére one or two generations ago. Setting up the obvious Mongol analogy to be a meaningful threat this far into the story is a stretch that can’t be explained just with the world’s tendency to produce geniuses and heroes, and having the player’s civilization to reference.
Still, there’s also the northern tribes, so perhaps the world has a longer history in general and it’s a hidden rule that the “newbie” area is forcibly suppressed to be more or less a cultural blank slate, so the player can rule more easily and shape the culture from scratch? Although it’s somewhat unusual that hasn’t been talked about, MC is obviously reclusive for a player and his patron doesn’t seem to want to tell him more than he asks for the sake of his growth.
