Chapter 8: If Only You Had Said Those Words To Me
Everyone had clearly seen what just happened.
In the light screen, it was evident that Gu Ran had just used spatial abilities.
That spatial slash had split the bullet aimed at the baby girl.
Then, in a burst of power, Gu Ran had also sliced the other boys present into fragments using spatial slashes.
The sudden appearance of those space rifts, like sword-like tears in space, was unmistakable.
But they wished they had been mistaken.
Why did Gu Ran awaken spatial abilities?
If Gu Ran had spatial abilities, why would he still covet his own sister’s ability core?
Wasn’t it precisely because he desired such power?
This was too contradictory, seriously challenging their understanding.
“I get it,” Lin Fan spoke as though he had figured everything out. “I have to admit, that tyrant was indeed lucky to awaken spatial abilities at such a young age.”
“However, he was born in the slums, a place everyone knows is chaotic, and now the tyrant’s strength is far too weak. Who knows how long it will take for him to fully grow?”
“So, he must have lost his ability core during this period of growth. For an ability user, the larger and stronger the ability core, the more it binds with the user. It’s only when he was still weak, losing the ability core, that he could have preserved his life.”
“But the tyrant, who had once tasted the power of spatial abilities, couldn’t bear losing such power, so he set his sights on his own sister. Even knowing that his sister was already bound to the ability core, and that losing it would likely cost her life, he didn’t care at all.”
The crowd suddenly understood.
“Oh, so that’s it. Governor Lin is indeed insightful; his understanding of human nature far surpasses ours.”
This logic was easy to grasp, much like some young men and women who, after tasting forbidden fruit, are driven by an insatiable desire, unable to control themselves. Gu Ran clearly felt the immense power of spatial abilities, which made him unwilling to lose such power after it was gone.
“Come to think of it, when I met him back then, I never saw him use spatial abilities.”
At this moment, a cold voice echoed.
Lin Fan looked towards the owner of the voice—Cheng Youmeng.
Cheng Youmeng had a petite figure with a very youthful face, but her black martial outfit tightly restrained two peaks that were utterly disproportionate to her small frame.
She cradled an ancient-looking sword with intricate carvings on its scabbard across her chest, diagonally across the two peaks.
She was the commander of Gu Ran’s personal guard, and one could also say she was once Gu Ran’s admirer.
But due to various reasons, she and Gu Ran became bitter enemies, and she joined Lin Fan’s allied forces.
The device in Meteorite City that disrupted space had been shut down and destroyed by her. Without her actions, Gu Qingqing wouldn’t have been able to lead the allied forces to teleport here, and the army wouldn’t have been able to so easily breach the Meteorite Tower.
Lin Fan had long desired Cheng Youmeng, considering her as one of his future concubines.
However, he had never had a good opportunity before. Now, hearing Cheng Youmeng speak, he immediately responded, “Master Youmeng… you knew that tyrant from long ago, and when you knew him, he could no longer use spatial abilities, right?”
He initially wanted to affectionately call her “Youmeng,” but considering the presence of other beauties, showing too much closeness might make it harder to bring them into his harem, so he quickly changed his words, adding the honorific “Master,” a title for a Golden Core martial artist.
Lin Fan smiled to himself, “It seems I guessed right. The tyrant probably had a grudge with someone in the slums and then lost his ability core.”
Cheng Youmeng’s attention never shifted to Lin Fan; her gaze remained fixed on Gu Ran in the light screen.
Her feelings towards Gu Ran were complex, filled with both hatred and an intense curiosity about his past.
She wanted to know what Gu Ran had gone through to become the person who would later kill his only family member.
Gu Qingqing’s heart was filled with bitterness.
Though her life had quickly become filled with endless study and training after being separated from her brother Gu Ran as a child, she would still occasionally remember that she had a brother.
Although she couldn’t quite recall what they had experienced together, a faint sense of happiness would still linger in her heart.
This gave her all sorts of beautiful fantasies about her brother, but these fantasies were eventually shattered completely.
Her brother had indeed once risked his life to be good to a sister, but that sister wasn’t her; to her, he only had greed and demands.
If her ability core could transform Gu Ran into the brother she had always imagined, she would give it up without hesitation.
But she knew that was impossible; Gu Ran had disappointed her and everyone else.
Even if he obtained her ability core, it probably wouldn’t make any good difference.
…
In the light screen.
Gu Ran was also amazed by his own power.
That powerful force had just erupted from him, but it was an attack he had used subconsciously after his outburst.
As for what this power was, why it had erupted from him, he was momentarily bewildered as his mind was still in turmoil.
After a while, Gu Ran touched the area over his heart and had some guesses.
Because his domain of rubbish always included discarded newspapers, magazines, and other knowledge-bearing materials, he had some understanding and speculation about ability users.
When an ability user awakens, an ability core forms in their heart.
The ability core can somewhat replace the heart’s function, enhancing a person’s physical attributes.
Thus, many ability users, while not as physically strong as martial artists, were still far stronger than ordinary people.
However, as the ability user grows, the ability core gradually merges with the heart.
Therefore, the heart becomes a weakness for ability users, though it’s generally difficult for anyone to strike an ability user’s heart.
Gu Ran recalled how he had punched that first boy earlier.
Perhaps that was the reason. He had the talent of an ability user, so his physical attributes far exceeded those of ordinary people.
“Am I an ability user now?”
Thinking this, Gu Ran was a bit thrilled.
He struggled to stand, but pain suddenly shot through his limbs.
His limbs had already been broken.
“I’ve heard that ability cores not only grant ability users powerful superpowers but can also improve their bodies. I wonder if it can heal my limbs.”
After struggling for a while, Gu Ran gave up trying to stand and instead crawled on the ground, moving towards the baby girl.
Along the way, he crawled through nauseating flesh and blood, eventually reaching the baby girl’s side.
“Now, I have the ability to protect you, little sister,” Gu Ran smiled at the infant girl.
…
Outside the light screen.
Gu Qingqing muttered with a downcast expression, “If only you had said those words to me.”
