Chapter 4: This Baby Can’t Possibly Be Gu Qingqing!
Gu Ran looked at the baby in the corner, feeling quite surprised.
This was the first time he had encountered such a situation.
Gu Ran immediately searched the surrounding area, trying to see if the baby’s parents were nearby.
After searching for a while, Gu Ran realized that there was no sign of anyone else around. He understood that this baby had been completely abandoned.
In the slums, many people had to struggle just to survive, so a baby like this was nothing but a burden.
The parents’ final act for their child was likely not to completely cut off her chances of survival. They didn’t abandon her in a desolate place but left her at the corner of a street.
When the day comes, and more people pass by, perhaps some kind-hearted person would take in the baby.
But the more likely outcome was that no one would care…
Gu Ran squatted down to check on the baby.
The baby’s skin, which should have been fair and tender, was somewhat yellowish, indicating malnutrition. Her hair was also sparse, lacking the cuteness that babies typically have.
“Are you hungry?”
Gu Ran thought for a moment, then turned back to his residence, taking out a piece of bread and a bottle of water.
He returned to the baby, tore off a small piece of bread, moistened it slightly with water, and placed it in the baby’s mouth.
As soon as the baby’s lips touched the wet finger, they began sucking on it immediately. After the bread entered the baby’s mouth, the crying immediately lessened.
Seeing that it worked, Gu Ran hurriedly tore off a few more small pieces to feed the baby.
On the moonlit street, a frail little boy gently fed a baby, creating a scene that was strangely warm.
…
In front of the Trilateral Crystal Prism.
Someone whispered, “That baby must be Lord Gu Qingqing. I didn’t expect that Lord Gu Qingqing was picked up by that tyrant.”
“So, Lord Gu Qingqing and that tyrant aren’t really siblings. No wonder there’s no brotherly affection at all, and he was ruthless enough to seize Lord Gu Qingqing’s ability crystal.”
“This makes sense now. No wonder this tyrant is so heartless.”
Gu Qingqing frowned as she watched the screen showing Gu Ran tenderly feeding the baby.
She was momentarily stunned. Gu Ran had never mentioned that they weren’t biological siblings.
But based on what was shown on the screen, it seemed she was indeed picked up by Gu Ran at that time.
So we aren’t really siblings?
Is that why you could be so heartless…
Gu Qingqing’s heart was in turmoil.
“Impossible! That baby definitely can’t be Qingqing!”
Suddenly, a voice broke out with firm conviction.
Seeing everyone’s attention shift to him, Lin Fan continued, “Have you all forgotten? The transfer of ability crystals can only happen between blood relatives! Even if someone steals another’s ability crystal, they can’t integrate it into their own body because of the difference in bloodlines—it would be rejected!”
“Why did that tyrant seize Qingqing’s ability crystal? I think it’s because he coveted her rare space ability and wanted to integrate her crystal to gain that power for himself.”
“If they weren’t blood relatives, then what’s the point of him taking Qingqing’s crystal? It would be completely useless!”
“Mark my words, either that baby is someone else, or something happened to that baby and she didn’t survive, or that tyrant never actually adopted the baby!”
“After all, he could barely feed himself. How could he possibly feed another mouth? Feeding the baby was just a fleeting moment of kindness, probably because he hadn’t yet been too deeply influenced by the bad elements of the slums. Once he realized the harsh reality, his evil nature would surely have taken over again.”
His explanation was logical and convincing.
At least most people present believed this theory, as they also recalled that an ability crystal is the source of an ability user’s power and can only be integrated into someone closely related by blood.
An A-level ability user hesitantly said, “But that tyrant seems to be an orphan. If Lord Gu Qingqing wasn’t adopted by him, then where was Lord Gu Qingqing at this time?”
That was indeed a question.
Lin Fan thought for a moment, then smiled, “I suppose the tyrant later found his parents. Given his age, he still had a lot of growing to do afterward, and this might also explain why, although they are siblings, the tyrant and Qingqing are so different in terms of morality.”
“So, I was mistaken. It seems Qingqing didn’t grow up in the slums like that tyrant. Qingqing’s good nature must have been influenced by her parents.”
By the end, Lin Fan was warmly looking at Gu Qingqing.
Everyone nodded in realization, agreeing that this was a very reasonable guess.
Gu Qingqing’s eyes flickered slightly.
She looked at the screen and softly said, “So, will I see my parents later?”
Lin Fan’s theory touched her in regards to her parents. In her memory, there wasn’t a trace of her parents—only endless study and the strict teachings of her mentor.
She was eager to know about her parents’ appearance and their story.
Lin Fan was taken aback. Gu Qingqing didn’t seem to care about his praise and was more concerned about other matters, which made him feel slightly frustrated.
He quickly nodded, confidently saying, “Of course, Qingqing, just keep watching. I’m sure my theory is correct. This is the most reasonable explanation right now!”
On the screen.
Gu Ran fed the baby for a while, and after seeing that the baby had finally stopped sucking his finger and was full, he hesitated.
Putting away the bread and water, Gu Ran turned to look at the baby on the ground one last time, and then he went back to his residence, lay down on the bed, and seemed to fall asleep again.
…
Lin Fan said smugly, “See? I was right. That baby isn’t Qingqing. It looks like the tyrant didn’t adopt the baby; he just showed a moment of kindness and then abandoned the baby again.”
Someone echoed, “That baby is really pitiful, being abandoned twice in such a short time.”
…
On the screen.
Gu Ran lay in bed, but he didn’t sleep. He tossed and turned several times.
At this moment, his heart was filled with conflict.
“Sleep, just sleep. You can’t even feed yourself, so how can you feed another mouth? She’ll definitely meet a kind person, and they might even give her a better life than you have. She won’t even remember that you once fed her bread.”
Everyone outside the screen could hear Gu Ran’s whispered muttering.
Lin Fan wore a satisfied expression.
Others shook their heads, “In a place as sinful as the slums, that baby’s fate is already predictable.”
A hint of disappointment appeared on Gu Qingqing’s face as well.
But at that moment, on the screen, Gu Ran suddenly seemed to come to a realization. He abruptly got out of bed, stood up, left his residence, and walked back toward where the baby was.
Lin Fan and everyone else froze.
Could they all have been wrong?
