Chapter 23: The City Defense Army Was Defeated!
After picking up the communicator, Gu Ran carried it with him and rushed towards the frontlines of the battlefield.
No matter what, this district in the slums, now ravaged by the fierce beasts, had been his home for over a decade. For now, at least, he and the city defense forces had a common enemy.
From a distance, he could see the city defense forces forming a large fan shape, charging towards the dense groups of beasts ahead.
“These beasts seem a bit strange.” Gu Ran stopped to observe.
In the distance, those beasts looked ferocious and vicious, with blood-red eyes brimming with murderous intent.
Yet strangely, they neither attacked the humans nor fled but remained in place.
It seemed as though they were deliberately waiting for the humans.
Suddenly, an ominous thought arose in his mind.
Could this be a strategy of the beasts?
Were they lying in wait for a chance to strike?
Had the commanding officer of this city defense force noticed it?
Gu Ran teleported himself to the top of a collapsed building, scanning the surroundings, searching for the commander of the city defense forces.
At the same time, he turned the communicator’s volume to its maximum, hoping to catch some clue.
The communicator’s channel was very special, a military-only channel, transmitting one-way messages from the command to the soldiers.
“Zzzzzz—”
The communicator crackled to life again.
“All units, take note! Everyone is to cooperate fully with the special ability strike team! Create conditions for the special ability strike team to carry out their beheading operation!”
“Do not fear sacrifice; retreating will be dealt with according to military law!”
“Your glory will be etched in the history of humanity, and your families will be well taken care of!”
“My soldiers, charge forward bravely!”
The words were stirring, filled with a contagious fervor.
However, Gu Ran couldn’t help but frown. Had the commander not noticed the abnormality of the beasts?
Or had he noticed it and devised a solution that Gu Ran had yet to comprehend?
The praises General Duville received on television were numerous. As the saying goes, there is no unworthy man beneath a great reputation.
Gu Ran couldn’t help but carefully consider the commander’s intentions.
“Beheading operation, does it target those elite beasts?”
Gu Ran raised his head and looked towards the direction of the beasts.
Because the army and the beasts were now very close to each other, the city defense cannons naturally couldn’t fire here to avoid friendly fire.
Thus, to eliminate the elite beasts, the city defense forces would have to rely on themselves.
And General Duville’s tactical objective was clear: eliminate those elite beasts at all costs. His confidence probably stemmed from the special ability strike team mentioned in the communicator—a strike team composed entirely of special ability users.
Gu Ran teleported to another high vantage point, suitable for observing the battle.
If the city defense forces could handle these beasts, it would save him from having to intervene.
To protect the special ability strike team, almost all of the city defense forces were deployed, using overwhelming firepower to draw the attention of the beast hordes.
Meanwhile, the hidden special ability strike team seized the opportunity created by the scattered beast groups to launch their attack.
Their first target was a giant gorilla, over ten meters tall, with blood-red fur standing on end like porcupine quills.
“I’ve never seen a special ability user transform into an animal before.” Gu Ran was slightly surprised when he saw a member of the special ability strike team suddenly turn into a giant eagle.
There were many types of special abilities, and probably no one in the world could accurately count how many existed. Beast transformation abilities were actually quite common, but it was the first time Gu Ran had seen it in reality due to his limited experience.
The giant eagle carried several team members, flying to the gorilla beast’s head. A handsome man jumped down from the eagle, landing on the gorilla’s back.
With a flash of light, he crossed his hands, and dual blades sheathed.
The gorilla’s neck was nearly severed by his strike!
The gorilla had no chance to resist at all during the entire process.
In other directions, the special ability strike team was also progressing smoothly, successfully executing their plans.
However, as Gu Ran observed the reactions of the beast horde, he grew increasingly uneasy.
“There it is, over there.” Gu Ran spotted the location of Duville’s battlefield command center and teleported away from his original position.
……
“General, the special ability strike team’s plan is going very smoothly. We’ve already eliminated six elite beasts!”
A communications officer, looking at the message in his hand, shouted excitedly.
“Haha, Staff Officer Yang, what did I tell you? You were completely overthinking it. With my special ability strike team, how could I possibly lose?”
“Executing the beheading plan was absolutely the right choice. Once most of the elite beasts are cleared, we can blanket the remaining lower-tier beasts with artillery fire.”
Inside the military tent, a blond man in his twenties patted the shoulder of a middle-aged man with black hair and yellow skin in his thirties.
Although the elite beasts could not withstand the damage from the city defense cannons, they could resist the smaller caliber artillery of the army.
If these elite beasts weren’t cleared first, they could potentially reach the artillery positions and launch an attack.
“Colonel Duville, I still maintain my view. The behavior of these beasts is abnormal; we cannot act rashly!”, Staff Officer Yang insisted, with a tone that bordered on pleading.
Upon hearing “Colonel Du Weier” from Staff Officer Yang, Kelly Duville’s expression stiffened slightly.
The reason he preferred to be called “General” by others was because, to him, the title of General was higher than that of Colonel, putting him on par with the Group Army Commander Yang Tian. Hence, he liked the title more.
Only Staff Officer Yang, who came from the Yang family, insisted on calling him Colonel, which somewhat annoyed him.
He’s definitely a spy sent by that old thief Yang Tian to stifle my development.
This was a thought that Kelly Duville often repeated in his mind.
The Yang family had deep roots within the D Zone’s Group Army, and it wasn’t surprising to him that they would send someone to expand their influence and extend their reach into this army.
As such, Kelly Duville wasn’t surprised to find a Yang family plant within his unit. However, Yang’s constant questioning of his decisions and his contrarian attitude made him very unhappy.
“This time, I’ll show them a flawless victory!”
Kelly Duville thought coldly to himself.
This special ability strike team was something he had requested from his family, and technically, it was a private force of the Duville family, rather than part of the D Zone Group Army’s official units.
The aim was to use today’s opportunity to achieve a major victory, bolstering his credentials within the military, and suppressing the Yang family’s influence.
As for the abnormality of the beasts that Staff Officer Yang kept talking about, Duville dismissed it as just an excuse to block his merit.
“Haha, these unintelligent beasts—what’s there to fear? Staff Officer Yang, you’re just too timid. My special ability strike team has nearly secured a great victory! Just wait for our triumphant celebration.”
Outside the military tent, Gu Ran, having overheard the conversation between the two, frowned.
“So, it’s this kind of arrogant commander.”
This only heightened his sense of foreboding.
“Ge… General… the f-f-frontlines have completely collapsed!”
At that moment, the communications officer inside the military tent stammered with a trembling voice.
……
???
The frontlines have completely collapsed?
The people watching the screen couldn’t help but feel puzzled.
Wasn’t it said that this genius from the Duville family fought the beasts for 48 hours and wiped them out?
